SHANGHAI, July 17 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said in Shanghai Friday that he expected cooperation between China and the United Stated in the fields of clean energy technology and carbon emission elimination would benefit both countries in the campaign against climate change.  "I believe there is great opportunity for greater cooperation between United States and China," said Locke, a Chinese American, in his speech at a welcome ceremony jointly hosted by American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai and the US-China Business Council.     His audience included dozens of Chinese businessmen from across the country and representatives of international corporations with branches in Shanghai.     "I want China and the United States to lead the world and save the planet from irreversible climate change. BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Thursday that China and Germany should join hands to combat trade and investment protectionism.     The premier made the remark during a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in which the two leaders also discussed bilateral ties and other issues of common concern.     Wen said cooperation between China and Germany, both among the world's major economies, is developing smoothly in a variety of fields.     He said the two sides should continue to handle their relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, and keep up high-level exchanges. The two nations, Wen said, also should strengthen communications and coordination to push for a healthy and stable development of their bilateral ties.     China, Wen said, always adheres to a win-win strategy in opening to the outside world and insists on the maintenance of a fair and open market environment. He said China would never discriminate against foreign enterprises or products.     The premier said China's determination to cope with climate change is firm, its operations active, and its measures effective. China, Wen said, is ready to enhance collaboration with Germany in developing new and renewable energy and maximizing energy efficiency.     China also will participate in related negotiations and work with other countries to help bring about positive results at the December UN Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen, Wen said.     Merkel said Germany is very satisfied with the development of China-Germany relations. She said Germany is ready to work with China to maintain high-level exchanges, strengthen trade and economic cooperation, and oppose trade and investment protectionism.     Germany also is prepared to jointly deal with the challenges brought about by the global financial crisis and advance bilateral ties, she said.     Merkel said she hoped that the two countries would strengthen communications and jointly tackle the issue of climate change.

YEKATERINBURG, Russia, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met here Monday night with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.     Hu said China has always striven, steadfastly and from a strategic and long-term perspective, to promote good neighborliness and friendly cooperation with India, an important neighbor of China and also a fast-growing emerging power.     The Chinese side is ready to work with the Indian side to maintain the sound momentum for development of the bilateral strategic and cooperative partnership, make greater efforts to implement the "10 strategies" reached between the leaders of the two countries, enhance mutual political trust and reciprocal cooperation in various fields, take into consideration each other's concerns and core interests, and strengthen coordination and cooperation on major international and regional issues, said Hu. Before the issues are finally resolved, efforts should be made to ensure peace and tranquility along the border region, he said.     India recognizes the Tibet Autonomous Region as part of the territory of the People's Republic of China and will not allow anyone to carry out anti-China political activities in Indian territory, he said.     He said a healthy and stable bilateral relationship serves the interests of the two countries and also conforms to the interests of the region and the world at large.     Hu and Singh are here to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the first meeting of BRIC, scheduled to be held in Russia's third largest city Wednesday.     Indian is one of the four observers of the SCO, a regional organization now groups China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. SHENZHEN, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Chen Yunlin, president of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) said Saturday that the ARATS will offer more support to help Taiwan businessmen weather through the financial crisis.     Chen said this at a symposium here Saturday on the development of Taiwan companies amid the financial crisis.     According to the Taipei World Trade Center, the second purchase delegation from the mainland had shown intention to purchase more than 600 million U.S. dollars worth of goods from Taiwan companies in the coming 12 months during a weeklong visit to the island, mainly involving food, drinks, garments and daily necessities.     "Under the current circumstances, we should positively seek more cooperation opportunities to overcome the hardships," said Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF).     The mainland will send the third procurement delegation to the island in August, focusing on the island's chemical industry, electronic products and automobiles.     More than 50 representatives from the mainland-based Association of Taiwan Investment Enterprises, the Taiwan-based "Chinese National Federation of Industries" and other organizations attended the symposium, which was jointly held by the ARATS and the SEF.
