BOSTONIA (CNS) - A 29-year-old woman was killed in a two-car collision in a neighborhood just north of El Cajon Friday, authorities reported.The woman was making a left turn from northbound Peerless Drive onto westbound Pepper Drive in the Bostonia area when her 2000 Chevrolet Malibu was struck broadside by an eastbound 2003 Volkswagen Passat shortly before 7:30 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.Medics took the mortally injured El Cajon resident to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, CHP public affairs Officer Travis Garrow said.Her name was withheld pending family notification.The driver of the Volkswagen, a 22-year-old El Cajon man, suffered minor injuries in the crash, Garrow said.Investigators were attempting to determine which driver was at fault. 805

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Pregnant and practicing medicine: It's impressive under normal circumstances, but now that's even more true during a pandemic."It's definitely an interesting experience," said Dr. Sharise Richardson, who is 31 weeks pregnant. "I am not immune to some of the stresses and anxieties that moms are thinking of right now."Richardson is a doctor on staff at West Boca Medical Center, seeing patients and delivering babies."My medical training does give me a little more perspective, and that allows me to be able to work and not feel too anxious," she said.Richardson said she's no stranger to being pregnant in difficult times. Her first baby was born during the Zika outbreak. She's now taking extra steps to honor her commitment to her patients, while keeping her family safe."I come home and take what my husband calls my decontamination bath," she said. "Leave my clothes outside, shoes outside."Richardson said the questions from pregnant women are plentiful right now."First and foremost, I tell my moms to take a deep breath, right," she said. "You are in good hands."Richardson said the number one feeling she gets from patients is anxiety and fear of the unknown. Some of that, she believes, stems from anxiety about whether or not a support person will be allowed in the hospital with a laboring mother. So far, the answer is yes."Everyone in the room, including themselves will have a mask on. that makes them feel better," she said.It's a feeling West Boca Medical Center acknowledges."People coming to us at a wonderful time and an anxious time," said George Rizzuto, the CEO at West Boca Medical Center. "Our hospital is safe and clean, but it has taken a lot of rigor in regard to protocols."Richardson is sticking to the protocols to deliver babies as safely as possible and have her own newborn at the hospital weeks from now."For me, it's just taking it day by day," she said. BETHANY, Mo. — Nearly every school in the Kansas City area requires students and staff to wear masks on campus. But that's not the case across the state of Missouri.As of early December, none of the five districts in Harrison County, Missouri — located about 90 minutes northeast of Kansas City — had required masks, but that's soon changing."We have several students, several faculty and staff, that decide to wear a mask," said Dennis Eastin, the superintendent at South Harrison R-II in Bethany. "It is personally up to them."Signs around the campus encourage the use of masks, but the school board decided not to require a mask mandate at the beginning of the school year. Eastin said that decision has been revisited at board meetings, but not changed. Eastin said he hears from parents who support the lack of a mandate, and parents who wish the school would install one."Both are justified in their argument," Eastin said. "I would say there's a difference of opinion out there."Members of the school board have shared their opinions, too. School Board Vice President C.F. Rainey has multiple posts on his personal Facebook page that criticize mask-wearing and public lockdowns. Rainey declined to comment publicly but did say he would allow data that he posted on his Facebook page to stand on its own. Four other members of the school board did not respond to interview requests.South Harrison has roughly 1,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Harrison County's Health Department said that 487 students and faculty have been put under quarantine and/or isolation as of Dec. 2. That number includes students who have had multiple quarantines, and it includes Eastin. Eastin said the largest number of students quarantined at one time happened in November. Roughly 60 students on the 3 and 4-year-old campuses had to stay home for more than two weeks because a staff member had an issue with COVID-19. "I'm supposed to check my kids' temperature every day before they go to school," Cassi Deskins, a South Harrison parent, said. "Do you think that 95% of the parents are doing that? Absolutely not."Deskins is a nurse practitioner in Harrison County who regularly sees COVID-19 patients. Her children wear masks when they go to South Harrison Elementary. "I work in Gilman City, which is a very small community," Deskins said. "There's one clinic. I don't have the option to stay home with my children. My husband is also an essential worker."Deskins said parents in the district are frustrated with how often their children have to quarantine."One of my best friends' daughter has been out four times," Deskins said. "She was on three, two-week quarantines, and then has been on a 10-day quarantine."But she still doesn't expect the school board to institute a mask mandate."I would be thoroughly surprised if there's a mask mandate of South Harrison Schools," Deskins said. But as of Thursday, Dec. 10, the Harrison County Health Department Board had voted to implement a county-wide mask policy. That new policy, which goes into effect on Dec. 17, will require the county's school districts to comply."Listening to the data, they say the safest place for our kids is in the school building," Eastin said. "And schools should be open, and that's what we're planning to do."Eastin said that the district has spent more than ,000 this year on technology upgrades, including hot spots that families are able to check out when their children are forced to learn from home. BOSTON, Massachusetts — Just a few years ago, Michael Farid was a mechanical engineering student, trying to build a powered skateboard that could be controlled with body weight, similar to a Segway.But that didn’t pan out.As Farid recalls, he and his three business partners—all MIT grads—dabbled with various ideas (and even some prototypes) before they said to themselves, “Hey, let’s build a robot that can cook food!”“It started more as an engineering project,” Farid said. “Then over the course of time we evaluated what business model might work for this and what might not work for this. Basically we decided that starting a restaurant was the best way to derive as much value as we could from it.”Thus Spyce was born.“We were in school. We had a hard time finding a healthy delicious meal for anything cheaper than say or , and we were studying robotics…so naturally this is what we came up with.”Situated in the heart of downtown Boston, Spyce is turning heads; lunch rush customers have lined up out the door. The main attraction is its seven rotating robotic woks, heated via induction, that cook meals all on their own.Farid, Spyce’s co-founder and CEO, knows customers may come in for the novelty, but he hopes they stay for the cuisine.The menu consists of various types of international cuisine; some of the menu items include the “Thai Bowl,” the “Latin Bowl” and an “Indian bowl.”Executive chef Sam Benson — under the guidance of world renowned chef with several Michelin stars to his name Daniel Boulud — worked to create a menu that reminded him of his upbringing in New York.“Every cuisine you can imagine is there in New York City,” Benson said. “That’s something I wanted.”As to the difficulties a chef is faced with when asking a robot to do his or her work?“It was a challenge,” Benson said. “[For example,] dispensing kale so it was perfect…making sure the ingredients were handled correctly. We are working with a tool and technology that hasn’t been invented yet. So it’s like ‘OK, here’s the chef, here’s the Spyce robotic kitchen, let's merge these two, hospitality and technology.”Customers order at a kiosk, and almost immediately they’ll see their name appear on a digital monitor positioned above the robotic wok that will start cooking their order.Ingredients are stored in refrigerated bins behind the woks, and a device they call a “runner” moves back and forth collecting various grains, vegetables and sauces to dispense. The menu offers items with chicken, but they say that “for food safety reasons” their chicken is pre-cooked at a commissary off site. Meals take roughly 2-and-a-half minutes to cook, and once finished the robotic wok tips over—by itself, of course—and pours the finished entrée into a bowl.  The only time a human interacts with the food is when an employee adds any garnishes that a customer has selected. That person then puts a lid on the bowl and affixes a pre-printed sticker with the customer’s name.Farid acknowledges the fact that a restaurant concept like this does employ fewer people, but he says it’s a trade-off for efficiency and quality food that costs less. (Each bowl costs .50)“Definitely the goal was not to eliminate people from the process,” Farid said. “The goal was to deliver a really great delicious, exciting bowl at a more affordable price point that’s accessible to people at a lot of income levels.”He demurs when asked if their concept is the future of restaurants—“it’s a little early to say”—but they aren’t shy about their desires to expand.“We see ourselves primarily as a restaurant company first and tech company second. We would love to serve more people by opening a bunch more restaurants.” 3746
