SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials say officers made their second-largest meth bust along the southern border in history last week.On Oct. 9, officers stopped a driver at about 9:45 a.m. at the Otay Mesa commercial facility who was crossing with a tractor-trailer shipment manifested as medical supplies. The truck was referred to further inspection, where the truck was screened using an imaging system and canine officers.Officers detected irregularities in the rear of the trailer and say they found 1,816 packages comingled with medical supplies of spray bottles and pipette tools. CBP said those packages contained about 3,014 pounds of methamphetamine, 64 pounds of heroin, 29 pounds of fentanyl powder, and almost 37 pounds of fentanyl pills, worth an estimated .2 million.The meth seized in the vehicle stop is the second-largest meth bust in agency history, according to CBP."This massive seizure is testament of what law enforcement agencies can do when we combine forces – prevent over million worth of deadly drugs from entering our country; thus saving countless lives from addiction and overdose deaths," said DEA Special Agent in Charge John Callery. "DEA cherishes our great law enforcement partners in San Diego, especially those who work tirelessly to protect our nation’s borders. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — University of San Diego is sidelining its plans to return to some form of on-campus classes this fall unless given approval by state and local officials.A statement from USD President James Harris read that due to the rising number of cases locally and in California, as well as the lack of reopening guidance for colleges, they will offer remote learning for all fall undergraduate and graduate courses.The undergraduate semester is still set to begin on Aug. 17, according to the school."At the time of my original announcement, the number of daily cases of COVID-19 in San Diego County was approximately 100, and given the shut-down order then in place, we were optimistic the situation would be much improved by the Fall," Harris' statement read. "Instead, the number of daily cases skyrocketed, and San Diego is now averaging more than 400 cases per day."With less than a month to go before we begin Fall classes for undergraduates, we have reached the point where a final decision has to be made."Originally, the campus planned to offer in-person courses as part of a hybrid approach to the academic year. USD says it can still pivot to the planned hybrid model if conditions improve. The school added that the campus will also continue to offer students options for remote or in-person classes when they receive permission to move forward with the plan."The good news is that all of the great work of the task forces preparing for the Fall will benefit us as we move forward. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With the unknown future of in-person education, the Cajon Valley Union School District has continued to welcome kids to campus since March, but not as students. They’re offering child care.“They’re getting topics that they typically wouldn’t always get during the school year. Fun, light topics more like a summer camp but still learning,” said Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services Karen Minshew.She said their priority is giving a safe place to stay for children as their parents go to work.Gov. Gavin Newsom and California health officials have laid out a plan stating counties have to be off the state’s monitoring list for 14 days before they can reopen schools. Minshew said even with this announcement, their current setup falls within the guidelines.“Nothing had changed in terms of the model for child care so yes there’s was information for schools and what’s possible for schools but not child care,” she said.Danica Mitchell has a son who will be starting first grade in the fall. She dropped him off at Chase Avenue Elementary School for the summer program and said she’s happy with the steps the school has taken to keep the students safe.“I’m emotional because I’m an essential worker so both my husband and I work and we need to work to support our family so it’s very important that my child have somewhere to go,” said Mitchell.Minshew said they are considering four different models for the fall term but no matter what happens regarding education and policies for having students on campus, they will be there to offer childcare no matter what. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two men are dead and a woman is in critical condition after a car crashed into a Mission Valley bus stop Thursday.A driver collided with the three pedestrians in the 7500 block of Metropolitan Drive around 11 a.m. The driver remained at the scene for San Diego Police.One victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The other male victim was later pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital. Both victims were identified as men in their 40s.A 49-year-old woman was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, police say.Police and a friend of the female victim say the three pedestrians were sleeping behind the bus stop with their belongings at the time of the crash. Jessica Nelson said she knew the 49-year-old woman and brought her some clothing and make-up earlier that day. She said she tried to convince her to go eat with friends, but the woman stayed with her husband, according to Nelson.Nelson said the pink bags strewn about the crash sight belonged to the victim, she called Kelly.Nelson said she met Kelly a year and a half ago at the bus stop where the accident took place. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Video posted to Facebook Wednesday showing a violent encounter between a Pacific Beach worker and homeless man has already gained hundreds of shares and comments.You can see someone come out of B-Mo's Sandwich Shop on Garnet Avenue and push a table into a shirtless man's head, then begin throwing his belongings into the street. 10News reached out to the owner of B-Mo's but were told he wasn't available for an interview Thursday.But Pacific Beach locals who saw the video told 10News the video shows San Diego's homelessness issue has reached a boiling point locally."If you look at the video you can tell it's at the point of escalation," said Mike Bremer, who owns a nearby tattoo shop.Bremer says while he might not agree with how things played out, he understands how it could happen. "I don't condone using that kind of violence I'm here to support because something needs to be done," Bremer said.Bremer and other locals said they deal with issues related to the homeless on a near daily basis and it can make doing business difficult. Thursday, two San Diego Police officers arrived at B-Mo's, but wouldn't comment. A spokesperson for SDPD said officers were initially called out when the confrontation happened but the homeless man wasn't cooperative and the other man didn't want any further action taken. Police said Thursday in light of the video evidence they've now opened up a criminal investigation into the incident. It's unclear if anyone will be charged. 1502
