NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Sometimes people suffering with opioid addiction turn to others for help. But sadly professionals listening may need help of their own. After a local addiction treatment consultant died from an overdose, people in his community are asking others who are battling the disease to come forward.Jeremiah Jackson died on Nov. 10. He worked as a treatment consultant at American Addiction Centers in Brentwood helping others with their addictions. People who knew him said he was loved, and called his death a shock. Chris Boutte said Jackson was dedicated to his work."I know that was helping him so much, when we get to help others that helps us so much," Boutte said.  The two first met when Boutte became an Alumni Coordinator and consultant. "We just met and he helped me out with a lot of early struggles. Just dealing with clients who had relapsed and calling me and needing help and people passing away," he said.Boutte spoke to Jackson last month and was surprised to hear of his passing."Jeremiah was just a great example like he is somebody I needed in my life and he was also laughing and joking around and he would freestyle rap and like sing and break dance. He could just...everybody loved the dude," he said.Jackson had been clean for more than four years and shared his heroin addiction story with WTVF TV station in Nashville in December 2017. While working at AAC, Jackson attended a separate recovery program. He was clean for more than four years but last weekend he died from an overdose.Cindy Spelta has worked at Cumberland Heights helping others with their drug and alcohol addictions for more than 15 years. She said people in her field may sometimes need even more help than those they are treating.She said she has been sober from cocaine usage and alcohol for 17 years and also participates in a recovery program. Spelta said Jackson's passing is devastating and is possibly an example of what professionals call "compassion fatigue." "You're dealing with people whose lives have been destroyed and whose families' lives have been destroyed and all that is coming at you every day," she said. She also said each day the tolerance level for people in recovery drops while the chances of a fatal relapse go up. MISSION VIEJO, Calif. (AP) — Two people were bitten by a coyote in two separate attacks on a Southern California trail on Saturday. A spokeswoman for the city of Mission Viejo in Orange County says a woman was jogging on the Jeronimo Open Space when a coyote bit her lower left calf, leaving four puncture wounds. A second person said they were bitten on the left ankle while they were on the trail around 6:30 a.m. Both went to the hospital for treatment. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) says it performed the world's first dual heart-lung transplant of a COVID-19 patient in September.The hospital says the patient, described as a young man, had cardiomyopathy — a disease of the heart tissue that can lead to heart failure — before he contracted COVID-19 in June.The procedure, which was completed on Sept. 24, was also VUMC's first heart-lung transplant since 2006. Dr. Ashish Shah performed the complex surgery, along with Dr. Matthew Bacchetta.Shah said the patient's battle with COVID-19 seriously damaged his lungs and may have also further damaged his heart. By September, the patient was critically ill with advanced heart and lung disease. He was referred to VUMC from the University of Mississippi Medical Center."He was slipping fast, in and out of the hospital and certainly by the time we operated on him, his heart was really done," Shah said.Bacchetta and Shah performed the transplant using both lungs and the heart from the same donor, which the hospital says is standard in dual transplants. VUMC says the organs were from a donor who had hepatitis C, and that the hospital is one of the first centers to use such organs for patients awaiting heart and lung transplants.They say the patient has since left intensive care and continues to recover at the medical center, where he is doing well.According to VUMC, a dual heart-lung transplantation is rarely performed in the U.S. and typically only done at high-volume transplant centers, like Vanderbilt."This transplant, like every transplant we perform, serves as a great example of the critical role of teamwork in leading to good outcomes," said Dr. Kelly Schlendorf, the medical director of VUMC's Adult Heart Transplant Program. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — One of four former Minneapolis police officers charged in the death of George Floyd is asking to have his case dismissed.An attorney for Thomas Lane said in court papers that the case against his client should be dismissed for lack of probable cause.As part of his court filing, attorney Earl Gray filed transcripts from body camera footage recorded by Lane's camera and the camera of his partner.The transcripts, obtained by the Star Tribune and New York Times, show that Floyd begged officers not to shoot him during the initial encounter and later pleaded for them not to place him in the back of the squad car because he was claustrophobic and had just had COVID-19.At one point, Floyd said “I can’t believe this. I can’t believe this. Mom, I love you. Tell my kids I love them. I’m dead,” according to the transcripts.The transcripts say former officer Derek Chauvin then told Floyd he was under arrest and that he was “doing a lot of talking, man.”That’s when Gray says Lane asked twice if the officers should turn Floyd on his side, but Chauvin said no and used his knee to pin Floyd to the ground.Chauvin then knelt on Floyd's neck for nearly eight minutes, which was caught on video and has now been seen by people across the world. Floyd lost consciousness and was later pronounced dead.Gray also filed a transcript of Lane's interview with state investigators.Lane is charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and manslaughter, as are former officers J. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police in National City have arrested two suspects following a deadly 2015 shooting. According to the National City Police Department, Roger Hernandez, 30, and Luis Karam-Solis, 29, were arrested for the murder of Juan Munoz. The shooting happened in October of 2015. According to police, 18-year-old Munoz and his 17-year-old passenger drove to the 1600 block of Prospect Street after being followed by two men in a silver Nissan Altima. After the victims stopped, a Hispanic man approached their vehicle and fired several rounds. Munoz died on his way to the hospital and the 17-year-old passenger was shot in his thigh. Hernandez is currently being held on .1 million bail while Solis’ bail was set for million. 760
