SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A father whose infant daughter was found dead outside a Los Angeles-area mortuary surrendered Monday at the U.S.-Mexico border. Alexander Echevarria, 22, of Sacramento, turned himself in to authorities at the San Ysidro Port of Entry with his attorney by his side. Echevarria was considered a person of interest in the death of 8-month-old Alexia Rose. The baby’s body was found near a trash container outside a funeral home in Bellflower last week. The infant was partially covered by a blanket and left in a car seat. Police believe the girl died in Sacramento. Her death was not due to natural causes, the Sacramento County Sheriff said Monday. Family members had reported Echeverria missing on Memorial Day. They said he suffers from depression and had made suicidal statements. Echevarria, who also had an arrest warrant on domestic violence-related charges, is being held in San Diego pending transfer to Sacramento.Associated Press contributed to this report. 993

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A college student from San Diego is in custody Monday, accused of threatening to open fire on a school campus. Last week, a person posted a screenshot of what investigators believe is a text conversation with Trevor Faison in which he sent a message threatening to “shoot up the school.” Exactly which school he was referring to was initially unclear. According to Chief Joseph Ramos at the San Diego Community College District, Faison had been a student at Mesa College last semester but was no longer enrolled. Ramos said Faison is currently attending Saddleback College in Orange County. According to Gerry Braun, a spokesperson for the San Diego City Attorney's Office, police eventually "determined the criminal threat was made against an individual at La Jolla High School."RELATED: Team 10: The City Attorney's office effort to obtain gun violence restraining ordersBraun added, "there is another pending case in Orange County with similar circumstances." Chief Ramos said there was no immediate threat to Mesa College adding, however, “whether it’s serious or not, the fact that he mentioned an attack is serious to us.”The San Diego Police Department filed a gun violence restraining order Dec. 11. Although Faison had no guns registered in his name, officers were concerned he might have other weapons.According to Braun, he was served with the GVRO when he was booked into jail Monday afternoon on a felony count of criminal threat.He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday for his arraignment and has a hearing scheduled for Dec. 31 for the GVRO. 1591

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Clairemont woman says she came home to a break-in and heartbreak.On Friday afternoon at the Balboa Arms condos, Terri Harrison's adult daughter discovered a ransacked home.The intruder likely ripped a window screen before reaching in and unlocking the window.Missing from a bedroom was her daughter's laptop. In the master bedroom, a lock box was emptied of personal documents and some six pieces of jewelry, including a set of pearls belonging to her mom.Both her mother and father passed away two year ago."You wear something that's hers, you feel like she's close to you again ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A baby hippo was born Saturday night at the San Diego Zoo and is now freely exploring its habitat, although always under the watchful eye of her mother. The calf, the 9th birthed by Funani since she arrived at the Zoo, is yet to be given a name."Less than ten minutes after it was born, it was already on the beach," Senior Wildlife Care Specialist Jennifer Chapman told 10News. "Out of the pool, on the beach, so right away we knew this was a strong calf."Funani can already be seen exhibiting the behaviors of hippo mothers, including licking sand off her calf, nudging her into the water, and making sure she is coming up to the surface for air. "That bond is already starting and she can start to train the calf immediately," Chapman said. "This is where you go. This is where you don't go. Listen to me. And she goes through all of that with the calf and it's really from minute one."Because Funani is very protective of the calf, the father, Otis, is being kept in a separate area from the other two. They will eventually rotate into the publicly-facing part of the habitat.The last calf born at the Zoo was a male named Tony in 2017. Because hippo mothers typically lose interest in their offspring when they begin preparing to resume mating, Tony was sent to a different zoo in 2019. 1318
