SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A gang member was sentenced to more than 126 years in prison Tuesday for the murder of Navy pilot James Celani at Horton Plaza in 2017."This is not living. This is hell," said Celani's cousin, Sean, who was also shot in the incident. "Mr. Morris killed my happiness and my life."Sean, who asked not to have his last name revealed, and Celani were at the Mad House Comedy Club that night. Upon leaving the club, they walked past a group of men, including Morris. Sean said he offered an innocent greeting, "What's up, brother?" At that point, Morris pulled a gun and opened fire, killing Celani and hitting Sean in the leg. Prosecutors say Morris, who has a history of violence, was angry because of a fight that evening with his girlfriend.Celani's wife spoke during a victim impact statement, describing how she and their three children have suffered since her husband's murder. She called for Morris to get the maximum sentence. "The system couldn't or wouldn't protect Jim and Sean from Arrow Morris, but you can safeguard society from Arrow Morris by letting the punishment fit the crime and sending him to prison for the rest of his life."Morris has 60 days to appeal his sentence. 1221

SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- New SANDAG and San Diego County statistics show an alarming number of San Diegans of color are impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Wednesday, community leaders and elected officials announced the creation of a new regional task force to tackle the root causes of the inequities.The coronavirus did not create society's inequities."But it has definitely exasperated them, and it has highlighted them," San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said.That is why community leaders announced the creation of the new Regional COVID-19 Task Force for Equitable Recovery. They will work with elected officials to tackle the underlying problems that lead to inequities such as job, food, healthcare, and economic losses, felt by many San Diegans of color."You are valued," National City mayor, Alejandra Sotelo Solis, said in the Zoom announcement. "You have made a contribution to our community, and we want you to stay healthy.""The elected officials will then shoulder the obligation to take their recommendations and suggestions and translate them into policies that can be introduced for a vote to make the change real," Fletcher added.A newly released SANDAG report found that when compared to the white population, Black and Hispanic people are more than four times more likely to live in areas that have been impacted both by COVID-19 and unemployment.New San Diego County numbers show that while Hispanics and Latinos make up 34% of the county population, they account for 67% of the county's positive coronavirus cases."Not one community needs the testing, tracing, and treatment," JoAnn Fields with API initiative said. "But it needs to be on an equal level so that we are all protected as a whole community."The task force hopes to close the understanding, trust, access, and resource gap felt by people of color, in a proactive way. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The fight continues fort tenants in Oak Park who say they soon won't be able to pay their rent if it continues to go up. The group met with the San Diego Housing Commission Friday morning. Many of the tenants are seniors living on a fixed income. Some of them say they've already seen their rent increased twice this year. "There doesn't seem to be any protections for people like us," says one of the tenants who spoke during Friday's board meeting. "We're on a fixed income; we get a two percent raise every year. My rent was raised by 50 percent."Olive Wood Gardens is a low-income housing complex for seniors and those who are disabled. Tenants say they are scared for their future. "I don't know what to do now," says Kathy Blackstock. "I don't think I can go back to homelessness."They're not only asking help from the San Diego Housing Commission; the tenants are hoping the state would pass Assembly Bill 1482. Last week, a rally was held outside of the complex in support of the bill. It would make it illegal for property owners to raise rents more than seven percent in one year. The Senate Committee is currently reviewing the bill. The San Diego Housing Commission board says they've referred the tenants' comments and information to the staff. They will work on making some progress before next month. 1342

SAN DIEGO (KTGV)— A homeless man and convicted rapist accused of sexually assaulting a woman at an East Village bar in November faced his accuser in San Diego Superior Court. Gary Cushinberry, who's accused of multiple counts of sexual assault and attempted rape, pleaded not guilty. The judge ordered all media to conceal the victim’s identity, and to refer to her as Jane Doe. Jane Doe took the stand and recalled what happened on the evening of November 5th. She said she was at Amplified Kitchen and Beer Garden in East Village, celebrating with some colleagues.After having a few drinks, she headed to her car. She admitted she was drunk at the time, and her memory was hazy. But she did remember the moment her bottom touch the ground.“He was touching underneath the blanket, and I just remember being shocked. Uh, next he further proceeded to put his hand in my pants,” Doe said. While he attacked her on the ground underneath a dirty blanket, he tried to drug her with what she thought was a meth pipe, Doe continued. Detective Carlos Munoz of the San Diego Police Department also spoke in open court. After the case was assigned to him, he monitored surveillance cameras in the area. The detective found footage of a homeless man fitting Gary Cushinberry’s description, pulling Jane Doe into a bush next to her car. The two were not in frame for the next 25 minutes, until video captured Jane Doe speeding away from the parking lot, back into Amplified, where she later reported the assault.“It’s like you imagine a fight or flight. And I didn’t really fight and I didn’t flight. I just froze,” Doe said. Cushinberry, who is already a convicted rapist in Indiana, returned to the frame, just two minutes later. “When he walks up toward the intersection, or the corner, he is adjusting his belt, he is adjusting his waist,” Detective Munoz said. The next day, Jane Doe provided information for a suspect sketch.Officers also took her to Palomar Hospital to run a rape kit. DNA Criminalist Adam Dutra of the San Diego Police Department Crime Lab tested the DNA swab taken from the front button and zipper of Jane Doe’s shorts.“There was strong support for the inclusion of Mr. Cushinberry as the 98% contributor,” Dutra said. Cushinberry’s past convictions include rape in 1995, sexual battery in 1997, and recently, felony robbery in San Diego.His next court appearance is on December 19th. 2407

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Hundreds of volunteers, from all over the state, are in San Diego for Governor Gavin Newsom’s emergency preparedness campaign. It’s called “California For All.” The campaign is designed to help emergency responders during wildfires and other disasters. California For All campaign is bringing together 600 volunteers. The Community Emergency Response Teams, also known as CERT, is on a mission to help prepare people in the community in case of a natural disaster.CERT members are also trained to assist first responders. “It’s an opportunity for community members to learn basic skills to prepare their community to respond, in case of a major disaster or any event, where the actual true responders can’t get there on time” Dore Bietz. Governor Gavin Newsom and legislators came together to make a million commitment to the campaign. A video message from the governor was played during today’s session. CERT members also help engage diverse and socially vulnerable communities during times of need. “It is very difficult for first responders to come in when there is a language barrier,” says Bietz. CERT is a FEMA- recognized program. Members suggest every household should have a plan in case there is an evacuation in their area. 1265
