SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dozens of parents chanted "Too much, too soon," and " Protect our kids, protect our kids," before the school board meeting Tuesday evening. This is the the third time in less than one year that parents have shared their concerns about the district's Sexual Health Education Program (SHEP).  The district started teaching the program last year to students in sixth, eighth and high school following the state's passage of the California Healthy Youth Act.RELATED: Parents keep kids home to protest sex-ed programAshley Bever is a substitute teacher in the district and mom of two middle school students. She kept her kids home from school Tuesday in protest of the program that she calls too graphic. "I don't think you need to give kids more explicit content in order for them to make good choices. We just want it to be age appropriate," she said. "We don't think talking about oral, anal, and vaginal sex in the sixth grade is entirely appropriate or telling middle schoolers you can use a flavored condom."Other parents told the board the material promotes sexual experimentation and doesn't do enough to promote abstinence and pregnancy prevention. 　  "It's not about sex education, it's not about biological science, it's about promulgating and pushing a world view upon them. It's about sowing the seed of idea of gender confusion, gender dysphoria is what you're trying to promote," one parent told the board. District officials say students can opt out of the program with a note from their parent. They say less than one percent did so in 2017.The board maintains the program is state mandated, but attorney Dean Broyles with the National Center for the Law and Policy said that's not true. "There are only recommended curriculum, there are no mandated curriculum under the CA Healthy Youth Act because it's too new and a framework has not even been developed yet," said Broyles. Broyles told the board parents have been waiting almost a year for the public records that show how the curriculum was adopted. He told the board if they don't get the records soon, they'll go to court to fight for them.The board did not take any action on the issue. The item was not on the agenda. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Home prices in the US fell in May while San Diego home prices remained flat and rents rose sharply, according to a new Zillow report. Zillow says the median home in San Diego is now worth 1,000. In the US, the median home is worth 6,800, down 0.1 percent from April. Overall, Zillow says home values in the US grew by more than 5 percent year-over-year. Some good news however, is that San Diego’s housing supply is increasing. Zillow says inventory is up 11.5 percent year-over-year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Five baby foxes were rescued from a South Bay construction site after a worker spotted them below a pile of cement rocks set for destruction.A construction worker at an Otay Mesa work site alerted his manager to the a Grey fox and her five babies this week, before crews were set to break down the pile with a jackhammer, according to San Diego Humane Society.Humane officers responded and removed the large blocks over the den with the help of construction workers. The days-old babies — two males and three females — made it out safely, but their mother fled over the commotion.Officers tried to lure the mom with fox pup sounds and her babies to no avail. Monday morning, SDHS says they were able to trap the mother. The babies and mom were brought to SDHS's Project Wildlife center for care, before being transported to Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona. 894

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dozens of women gun owners joined in solidarity Friday for the launch of #NotMeSD.It was created by San Diego County Gun Owners (SDCGO), a political action committee promoting Second Amendment rights.The initiative aims to empower women with knowledge and choice. The group believes one way to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault is with guns. “We will stand beside you, we will help you, and if you want to look at owning a gun or just coming out shooting at the range to just feel some empowerment, we're willing to stand right next to you and say how can we help?" said Jill Barto, a SDCGO member.At the gathering, Barto shared her traumatic story of being sexually assaulted. "It’s still kind of emotional, but at age 14 I was raped, I was date raped by a boyfriend, it really took a toll on me. I ended up getting pregnant from the rape, and I had my child and raised him, he’s now 37-years-old," said Barto. She was lucky to find a strong support group, one of them today being SDCGO.“It gave me a voice, it gave me a voice to say this is what happened to me and I’m not going to be ashamed of it.”The group has a three-step approach for women considering gun ownership:Get free advice about firearms from women gun owners in SDCGOGet referrals to gun shops for discounts and receive help filling out paperworkReceive help applying for a concealed carry weapon permit“It doesn’t mean they're going to buy a gun, it doesn’t mean they’re going be CCW holders, but that’s their choice, and we’re here to support them on their choice," said Barto.However, some believe guns involved in domestic violence situations do more harm than good.Carol Landale is with San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention. She supports a woman's right to arm herself but has concerns with the #NotMeSD message."The statistics show that when there is a gun in the home women are five times more likely to be killed with that gun, especially in domestic violence situations," said Landale. She says if a woman is going to purchase a gun, they must be extremely careful with how they store it. She also believes a lot of training is necessary to be proficient, especially in a high-stress situation.“If you’re going to be using a firearm you need to be practicing all the time. The police practice all the time, the military practices all the time, for somebody just to have a gun stored in a bedside table, who may have shot it once at a firing range, it doesn't seem like a sensible way to be able to protect yourself."Landale believes the decision to purchase a gun and use it, can have consequences.“I think the most important thing is to recognize that responsibility and to make sure you’re going to be willing to use a deadly weapon to kill somebody, that’s huge," said Landale.
