SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The convention center expansion initiative will not make the November ballot even though San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer gave it his best shot.Faulconer's ballot measure proposal to fund the convention center expansion, get homeless people off the streets and fix roads needed five votes to pass.  It only got 4.The vote came after Faulconer asked council to convene a special meeting with just 24 hours' notice.  The mayor requested it after learning there weren't enough valid signatures collected to place the measure on the November ballot. 602

It's about making learning a fun, family affair.In a classroom at Rosa Parks Elementary School in City Heights, 7-year-old students Melody and Isabella are getting some one-on-one attention with their lessons. The teachers in this case are Melody's grandmother and Isabella's mom."Everyday they have to read. Everyday they have homework to do," said Anna Gonzalez. She and Maria Theresa Jaume are among a growing number of parents and guardians getting more involved with their kid's education through the "Family Engagement Department" at San Diego Unified."So, I now know how to ask her questions," says Gonzalez, "How to engage her with the reading and things like that.""It solidifies the bond right," says Family Engagement Program manager Pamela King, "It shows kids that education is important." King says the program was established in 2016, inviting families to become partners in their kid's education with tips on how to do it."You're reading a fiction book. You're learning about the characters but what are characters thinking? What's motivating the character? So, going a little deeper."Organizers say it's about connecting with a child's curious nature. Despite ongoing challenges, residents at a senior living facility are finding ways to stay positive.You can’t see their smiles but you can tell they’re there.Residents at Belmont Village Senior Living in Sabre Springs are not only adapting to the pandemic, they’re overcoming it through "The Joys of Life."Don Bodow started the program to spread happiness and stimulate minds. Through a series of puzzles, games, and activities he helps fellow residents stay positive.“I’m making other people happy,” said Bodow. “Giving them joy simply makes me feel good.”Although they can’t be with their families during the pandemic, many are happy right where they are.“The joy of life is in all of us,” said Bodow. “We may not realize it and it needs to be brought out. You need to accept the fact that there are joys in your life.”One of his most active students is 98-year-old Pauline Hayes.“Some of those words are misspelled and you’re challenged to find them,” said Hayes. “I love doing Joys of Life.”Hayes attends every session and credits the class for keeping her sharp. When we asked her about the secret to life she replied, “keeping positive and keeping active.”Bodow says the program was built on his own experience after spending two months in a coma.“I lost all my memory, all my muscle mass. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Filipino community in San Diego numbers around 200,000, second only to Latinos.This election the effort to get out the vote among that group has stepped up.Jo Ann Fields is among those getting out the word. She's been manning a phone bank nearly every day for the past few weeks. "It's important for us to get out the vote so we can grab the attention of our decision-makers and get things done," Fields said.Fields is the Government and Public Relations Director for the Asian Pacific Islander Initiative. The group does many things to support and advance its community, including civic engagement."We are the second largest ethnic group after Latinos we are the largest segment among Asian Pacific Islanders," says Fields.According to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters, more than 46,000 special language ballots have been requested in Filipino this year.Fields says there are several factors she thinks will encourage people to vote in record numbers, including having a Filipino candidate on the ballot, such as Todd Gloria, who is running for San Diego mayor."This is the first time someone from our community would be the leader of a city with 1 million-plus residents so that's really exciting," Fields said.The effort to get out the vote has been impacted by COVID-19, but the outreach is all done virtually this year."Phone banking is one way, text banking is another, virtual town hall like we will have Friday," Fields recalls.That town hall is designed to answer questions about how and when to vote.
