WASHINGTON, D.C. – A new Gallup poll found Americans are increasingly willing to be immunized against the novel coronavirus. With two COVID-19 vaccines now in the final stages of approval in the United States, 63% of Americans told Gallup they are willing to be vaccinated. The latest findings come from a survey conducted in the last two weeks of November, which was around the time Pfizer announced their vaccine had proved to be better than 90% effective in its Phase III clinical trials.Since then, Moderna has made a similar announcement and both are seeking emergency use authorization from the FDA for their vaccines. If approved, some Americans could begin to receive vaccines before the end of the year.At 63%, the public’s willingness to be vaccinated has nearly rebounded to the previous high of 66% in July. It hit a low point of 50% in September.Gallup says reports of adverse reactions and statements from politicians may have contributed to the change in American views on vaccines.Specifically, Gallup points to President Donald Trump saying in early September that a vaccine could be available before Election Day, raising questions about pressure being put on the FDA to expedite approval. They also point to Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, who said she wouldn’t get a vaccine on Trump’s advice alone and expressed concern about the potential for political interference in the vaccine approval process.“The public's willingness to receive a vaccine in September suggests that public confidence in a vaccine can be significantly influenced by events or political messaging that cast doubt on vaccines' safety,” said Gallup. 1649

WASHINGTON, D.C. – NASA announced this week that astronaut Jeanette Epps has been assigned to its Boeing Starline-1 mission. The mission is the first operational crewed flight of Boeing’s CST-100 Starling spacecraft on a mission to the International Space Station.Epps will join astronauts Sunita Williams and Josh Cassada for a six-month expedition planned for a launch in 2021 to the orbiting space lab. This assignment will also make Epps the first Black woman to live and work in space for an extended period of time, CNBC and USA Today report.Epps reacted to the announcement in a video on Twitter, saying she’s looking forward to the mission. While this will be her first time in space, Epps said she’s “flown in helicopters with Sunni flying” and been “in the backseat of a T38 with Josh flying.”Thank you @JimBridenstine! WASHINGTON, D.C. — A home test for COVID-19 will soon be on U.S. store shelves. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday issued an emergency use authorization for the first kit that consumers can buy without a prescription to test themselves entirely at home.Regulators granted use for a similar home test last month, but it requires a doctor’s prescription. The new test kit from Australian company Ellume allows users to swab themselves and get the results at home in about 20 minutes. The test detects fragments of proteins of the coronavirus from a nasal swab sample from anyone 2 years old and up. It connect to a digital app to help users interpret the results.Similar to other antigen tests, the FDA says a small percentage of positive and negative results from this test may be false. Therefore, for patients without symptoms, positive results should be treated as presumptively positive until confirmed by another test as soon as possible.Individuals with positive results should self-isolate and seek additional care from their health care provider. Those who test negative and experience COVID-like symptoms should follow up with their health care provider as negative results do not preclude an individual from coronavirus infection. The company says it will have 3 million tests available next month.“The FDA strongly supports innovation in test development and we have worked tirelessly with test developers to support the shared goal of getting more accurate and reliable tests to Americans who need them. Today is a promising step forward and we are eager to continue advancing additional innovation in COVID-19 testing that the science supports,” said Jeff Shuren, M.D., J.D., director of FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. 1773

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration has announced that it will release nearly billion in aid to Puerto Rico to help the island rebuild its electrical grid and repair schools from the devastation of Hurricane Maria three years earlier. In a statement, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said .6 billion would be included for those projects. "Federal funding of .6 billion will allow the Puerto Rico Electrical Power Authority to repair and replace thousands of miles of transmission and distribution lines, electrical substations, power generation systems, office buildings, and make other grid improvements," McEnany said in the statement. "The billion grant for the Puerto Rico Department of Education will focus on restoring school buildings and educational facilities across the island."The announcement comes amid criticism that the assistance was overdue and being released now only for political purposes. The grant comes as President Donald Trump, who has balked at providing assistance to the island territory, and former Vice President Joe Biden court voters in Florida, which is home to a large population of people from Puerto Rico.In a press briefing on Friday, President Trump added that the aid package wasn't the only exciting thing happening in Puerto Rico - it was their pharmaceutical industry."We have spoken to various companies, and they are willing to go there," Trump said. "They want to have a little bit of help, but they are willing to go to Puerto Rico and Puerto Rico is going to be very exciting, let's going to happen. They were on the verge of doing it, and they took away all the incentives. I don't know how they allowed that to happen. It was very bad for Puerto Rico and the people of Puerto Rico. That was done by Democrats, and a Republican is bringing it back."Trump added that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden "devastated" the country when he voted to eliminate a critical tax provision in 1996.A year ago, Trump stated in a tweet that Puerto Rico was one of the "most corrupt places on earth," but on Friday, he said it wasn't anymore because he's the best thing that's ever happened to Puerto Rico."I have to say in a very nice way, in a very respectful way, I'm the best thing that ever happened to Puerto Rico," Trump said. "Nobody even close. As a result, the island's economy under the previously mentioned names [Biden and former President Barack Obama], it just absolutely cratered. Biden's vote left the United States at the mercy of foreign suppliers, putting our national security and health at risk."Florida is a critical swing state in the Nov. 3 election. 2654
