BEIJING, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday called for a stronger high-level dialogue mechanism with the United States.     "China and the United States should continue to step up their high-level dialogue mechanism for substantive cooperation and stronger bilateral relations," Hu told visiting U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) meets with United States Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, capital of China, Dec. 5, 2008.     Their meeting came after China and the United States concluded their two-day Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED), which produced 40 agreements in areas ranging from finance and trade to energy and the environment.     Included in Paulson's high-profile delegation were the U.S. secretaries of agriculture, labor, health and the environment, among others.     Led by Vice Premier Wang Qishan, the Chinese delegation included more than 10 ministers from such areas as finance, development and reform, agriculture, labor, commerce, health, the environment and the central bank.     "The two delegations should summarize the good experience and practice of the SED talks and jointly implement the consensus and agreements that are reached," Hu said.     Initiated by the two presidents in 2006, the biannual SED is the highest level of bilateral economic dialogue.     Hailing the positive outcomes of the talks, Hu said the dialogue was a success because the talks stuck to comprehensive, strategic and long-term issues and served bilateral economic and trade cooperation, as well as the overall bilateral relationship.     The successes also lay in the fact that the two sides took care of both nations' interests and concerns, broadened fields of bilateral cooperation and cultivated new areas for growth, Hu said.     "The dialogue helped the two nations increase mutual trust, narrow their differences and properly address the problems arising from the cooperation," Hu said. BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council unveiled a long-awaited support package for the auto and steel sectors Wednesday to boost the two "pillar industries".     Under the plan, the government will lower the purchase tax on cars under 1.6 liters from 10 percent to 5 percent from Jan. 20 to Dec. 31 in a bid to stimulate sales.     It will also allocate 5 billion yuan (730 million U.S. dollars) to provide one-off allowances to farmers to upgrade their three-wheeled vehicles and low-speed trucks to mini-trucks or purchase new mini-vans under 1.3 liters from March 1 to Dec. 31. It will also increase subsidies for people to scrap their old cars and will straighten out and cancel regulations that restrict car purchase.     The plan encourages large auto companies, as well as major auto-part makers to expand through mergers and acquisitions so as to optimize resources and improve their competitiveness on the international market.     In the next three years, the central government will earmark 10 billion yuan as a special fund to support auto companies to upgrade technologies, and develop new engines that use alternative energies. The government will offer financial support to promoting the use of energy-saving autos and those fueled by new energies, and support automakers to develop independent brands and build auto and parts export bases.     The plan also urges improvements in the credit system for car purchase loans. More than 93 percent of Chinese vehicles are sold in the domestic market, but less than 10 percent are purchased on credit.     It also requires accelerated upgrading of the steel sector, transforming "big" industry competitors into "strong" international players.     It said the industry needed to eliminate outdated technology, and must not establish new projects that merely add to steel output.     China also needed to increase domestic demand for steel and adopt a more flexible tax rebate policy to keep international markets.     Special funds will be allocated from the central budget to promote technological advancement of the sector, readjustment of products mix and improvements of product quality, according to the plan.

TAIPEI, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese mainland's chief negotiator on Taiwan affairs Chen Yunlin said Thursday that complicated historical problems across the Taiwan Strait could well be resolved through mutual trust.     Chen, president of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS), told a banquet, held in the island's landmark Grand Hotel, that problems could be settled as long as the two sides made concerted efforts with "kindness and wisdom" to create conditions and firstly solve economic and livelihood problems closely linked with public interests.     Chen was grateful for the considerate arrangement and warm and friendly service on the part of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) over the past four days.     He was on a five-day visit to the island starting Monday for economic talks with the SEF, which was the first meeting held in the island between the ARATS and the SEF. The two signed historical deals concerning direct shipping, flights and postal services. BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- "Our confidence to face the global financial crisis should rely on science, knowledge and talented people," Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Saturday.     He made the remark during a visit to Beijing-based Zhongguancun Science Park, known as China's Silicon Valley.     "I'm here to consult you on how to let science and technology play a good role for us to not only handle the current difficulties but lay a foundation for long-run development," said the premier.
