SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Eight new cases of hepatitis A were reported throughout the county over the last week, according to the San Diego County Health Department. In total, 544 cases of hepatitis A have been reported throughout San Diego County. The new numbers come after the Board of Supervisors Monday extended the state of emergency amid the hep A outbreak.  RELATED: Board of Supervisors extends state of emergency for hepatitis A outbreakSince the outbreak began, 20 people have died from the infection. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For the first time in San Diego Zoo history, an echidna baby, commonly referred to as a puggle, has hatched at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Zoo officials say the tiny animal is estimated to have hatched on Feb. 14, 2020. Echidnas only breed once a year, before the mother lays an egg about the size of a grape and keeps it in a pouch in her abdomen. After seven to 10 days, a tiny puggle smaller than a jelly bean hatches. It attached itself to hairs within the mother's pouch, where it feeds on milk. Around six to eight weeks old, the puggle develops spike spines and the mother places it in a specially made nursing where she feeds it every three to six days.The puggle's mother, named Orange, and father, Shaw, also reside at the Safari Park. The tiny, spiny Australians species will spend most of its day sleeping, growing, and developing in its burrow.“We are thrilled and excited to welcome our first-ever echidna puggle at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park,” said Savanna Smith, wildlife care specialist, San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “It is an honor to care for this little one, as we learn more about this species’ reproduction through this puggle’s hatching. Mom and puggle are doing extremely well, and we will continue to monitor the puggle’s progress until it is ready to venture out on its own.”Echidnas are one of only two Australian mammals that lay eggs, the other being a platypus. They are notoriously difficult to breed in managed care, the zoo adds, making this even more momentous for the zoo.The sex of the animal has yet to be determined.It is expected that the young puggle will start venturing out on its own at about six to seven months old. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Driving under the influence arrests have dropped noticeably in cities where ride sharing programs have expanded, a new study says.An analysis performed by Moll Law Group and the University of California says DUI arrests in San Diego dropped 32% from 2015 to 2016.The study also looked at four other major cities with declines in California: 28% in San Jose, 26% in Sacramento, 14% for Los Angeles and the San Francisco-Oakland area.“We still seeing quite a few impaired people, they’re just not sitting in the front seat,” said Mark McCullough with San Diego Police Department’s traffic division.McCullough says the declining trend began a few a years ago when more new forms of transportation became available.“Five years ago we’d run a DUI checkpoint on a Friday night and we’d arrest 20 people and up,” said McCullough, “now on any given Friday if we arrest 10-15 people that’s a busy night for us.”Experts believe there may be other reasons behind the figures declining, but it’s still a number they don’t mind going down.“You’re not using your brain to your full potential if you get arrested for a DUI,” said McCullough, “there are just so many forms of alternative transportation.” 1225

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of Clairemont neighbors attended a public hearing Wednesday to learn why their neighborhood was picked for a new homeless housing project.A developer wants to convert former office space on 5858 Mt. Alifan Drive into roughly 50 apartments for the homeless. The location is near the Vons shopping plaza.“It’s just not acceptable. I’m not against homeless shelters by any means but this is not the proper location,” said Mark Bromley. He believes the site is too close to homes and schools.San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate said the developer has not yet applied for a permit to start the project. Cate told 10News he can’t give his opinion on the project in case the issue goes before the Council.Organizers shut down the planned open house after more than 200 people attended due to possible fire code violations given the size of the crowd.Another informational meeting is tentatively scheduled for next Tuesday at a larger location. 973

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — From California to Maine, breweries across the country are stepping up to help California fire victims.The effort started with the Sierra Nevada brewery. While their facility was spared by the Camp Fire, communities around it were devastated.Sierra Nevada founder Ken Grossman reached out to fellow brewers to join him in the disaster relief effort, making their ‘Resilience Butte County Proud IPA’ recipe available to those who want to help. The brewery is asking that 100 percent of profits go to fire relief efforts. So far over 1,200 breweries have pledged to make and sell the beer.“I’ve never seen anything on this scale,” said Jim Millea, brewmaster at OB Brewery. “That’s a lot of beer being made for a good cause, it’s pretty sweet!”Millea says he didn’t hesitate to join the effort.“Who wouldn’t want to be a part of a good cause?” said Millea. He’s one of many in the San Diego region who will be brewing Resilience IPA. Millea hopes to have his on tap at the OB Brewery in a few weeks.
