Arlington National Cemetery is a shrine that honors our military.But on this Memorial Day, it’s facing a dilemma. It's running out of room, and is now considering restricting who can be buried there.“Arlington National Cemetery is just so special. Around here we say every day is Memorial Day,” said Karen Durham-Aguilera, the executive director of Army National Military Cemeteries.  “Without a change, every veteran who served in a Gulf War conflict, that's Iraq, Afghanistan and all the other conflicts we've been in since then, will not have the honor of coming here, even if they're medal of honor recipients."The cemetery holds more than 7,000 burials a year, or about 30 a day.With aging veterans and on-going conflicts, the cemetery is running out room and, if nothing changes, they'll run out of space in the next twenty years or so. Unable to expand much more, the cemetery is now looking at putting new restrictions on who can be buried there.On its website, the cemetery is now taking a survey asking the public for input on which veterans should get priority. For example: those killed in action, retired veterans, or those who received high honors, like a Purple Heart or Medal of Valor.“Anybody can take it. It's very narrowly focused, saying what do people want us to do." Said Durham-Aguilera.With your help, Arlington National Cemetery wants to make sure it's ready and able to honor the next generation.  “It's not just for that current generation of gulf war and beyond veterans, but that five-year-old who one day is going to raise his or her hand and say I want to serve this nation. An 8-year-old boy in Polk County, Florida caught an 11-foot, 3-inch gator late last month. It was his first real catch despite gator hunting several times with his dad.Grayson Chantley caught the gator on Lake Kissimmee late last month. He says his dad woke him up around midnight to go hunting. "Whenever they're big, I'm just like I want to get this gator," said Chantley.His dad caught it all on tape. Video shows the moment he landed the gator. Photos show the gator's head is almost the size of the 8-year-old. Chantley also showed off his catch to his older brother."I'm just shocked," added Chantley.Florida's state record for the largest gator caught happened in 2010 in Brevard County. The gator was 14 feet 3.5 inches, according to state wildlife officials.Grayson says he's still amazed."It teaches him how to survive. It teaches him nature, teaches him life," said Grayson's dad, Kevin Chantley.The family operates Grape Hammock Fish Camp. Chantley says he has grown up fishing and hunting. 1030

An outbreak of salmonella infections linked to chicken salad has sickened 65 people in five states, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday. No deaths have been reported, but 28 people have been hospitalized.Diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps are the symptoms of salmonella poisoning. Signs of illness usually occur within 12 to 72 hours and last for four to seven days in most cases.An investigation by the CDC and the US Department of Agriculture linked the outbreak to chicken salad produced by Triple T Specialty Meats Inc. in January and February and sold at Fareway grocery stores in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota. Most of the sick people are in Iowa.Triple T Specialty Meats has recalled all chicken salad sold at Fareway stores between January 4 and February 9.If consumers purchased chicken salad from Fareway but don't remember the date, they should not eat it, the CDC says. Either throw it away or return it to the store.Even if some of the chicken salad was eaten or served with no ill effects, the CDC advises throwing the rest away in a sealed bag so children or animals cannot eat it. Wash and sanitize countertops, refrigerators or freezers -- wherever the salad was stored.Because foods from animals may be contaminated with salmonella, never eat raw or undercooked eggs, poultry or meat, the CDC says.Most people recover from a salmonella infection without treatment. However, for some, the diarrhea may be so severe that hospitalization is necessary. In rare cases, an infection can lead to death unless a patient receives prompt treatment with antibiotics. 1648

Amid the pandemic, food banks are on average serving 60% more families than a year ago, according to a recent analysis by Feeding America. The analysis found that 80% of food banks in the Feeding America network have seen an increase in demand amid the pandemic.Despite this jump in demand, the organization says that food banks have “become accustomed” to increased demand for services. Feeding America’s analysis says that 40% of those going to food banks this year are doing so for the first time.Compounding issues for many families, food prices have jumped in the last year, according to USDA analysis. According to the USDA, the average cost of food prepared at home has increased 4% from October 2019 through October 2020. In the last 20 years, the average increase of food prices per year is 2%.The increase in prices has been most pronounced in meat, poultry and dairy. From October 2019 through October 2020, meat prices jumped 6.6%. Previously, meat prices generally increased 3% a year.The issue of increased prices was something that Feeding America leaders addressed last month as lawmakers have failed to come to an agreement on a new stimulus plan.“With food prices increasing at the fastest rate in 50 years and predictions that 1 in 4 children could face hunger this year, a 15 percent increase to the maximum SNAP benefit is the most effective way to meet the moment,” Kate Leone, Chief government relations officer at Feeding America, wrote. “Boosting SNAP benefits will provide families more resources to purchase the food they need through purchases at local grocers and businesses, which will stimulate economies across the country.“With the nation’s public health and economic crises continuing without an end in sight, our economy and families are being pushed to the very brink. We need our government to invest in the hunger-relief measures today because families struggling with hunger need it now.”Feeding America said that Americans can help by volunteering at their local food bank or donating to their local food bank or Feeding America’s COVID-19 Response Fund. ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — A 30th horse has died at Santa Anita on the last weekend of racing before the Southern California track closes for the season.Mike Marten, a spokesman for the California Horse Racing Board, says a 4-year-old gelding named American Currency was injured Saturday while exercising on the training track and was euthanized.The board had recommended that Santa Anita suspend the current meet following a string of deaths since Dec. 26, but management chose to continue until the last day of the meet on Sunday.Track owner, The Stronach Group, formed a panel to review horses' medical, training and racing history for the final six racing days.But Marten says American Currency wasn't entered to run in any race and thus wasn't subject to review by the panel.The horse is the fourth from the stable of Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer to die at the track. Hollendorfer was banned from Santa Anita following the latest death.The Stronch Group said in a statement that Hollendorfer "is no longer welcome to stable, race or train his horses at any of our facilities."On the recommendation of the special panel, the track's stewards scratched four horses trained by Hollendorfer that were to run Saturday and Sunday. 1244
