Authorities say a resident who suspected a man was drunk and got behind the wheel flagged down an officer, who was later shot and killed during the traffic stop.Stanislaus County sheriff's Sgt. Tom Letras told the Modesto Bee newspaper Friday night that the resident didn't see Cpl. Ronil Singh pull over the vehicle but heard the gunshots minutes later.Gustavo Perez Arriaga was captured Friday after a manhunt following Singh's killing Wednesday. Authorities say he was in the country illegally and was fleeing back to his native Mexico.Seven other people have been arrested on suspicion of helping Perez Arriaga, including his girlfriend and two of his brothers.Letras says Arriaga is expected to be arraigned on charges Wednesday. 742
As the Carr Fire becomes the seventh most destructive wildfire in California's history, renowned chefs Guy Fieri and José Andrés are doing everything they can to help feed the evacuees and first responders."My team and I got involved. My son and his buddies, and a bunch of my buddies, loaded up the caravan from wine country and drove four hours up here," Fieri said."We are just working arm-in-arm with the Salvation Army, local chefs, residents and everybody helping out all of the evacuees."More than 12,300 firefighters are battling 15 wildfires burning across California. In total, these fires have burned more than 280,000 acres, and forced more than 44,000 residents to evacuate.The Carr Fire began on July 23 in Northern California, and on Saturday Fieri arrived in Redding, a city of almost 100,000 people where the fire swept through. Two days after Fieri got there, José Andrés' nonprofit, World Central Kitchen, joined him and fellow food first responders, Operation BBQ Relief."We hit the ground on Monday and started our meal operation today. Guy is heading to the Lake County Fire and we are taking over, and continue the efforts here in Redding," said Nate Mook, Executive Director for World Central Kitchen.With the help of Operation BBQ Relief, Fieri and his team were able to make over 1,000 meals twice a day, Mook said.BBQ Relief, whose main mission is to feed those affected by natural disasters in the United States, has around 30 volunteers and with World Central Kitchen's help it totals to 100 people on the ground to help feed those in need."We are planning to do 5,000 meals a day or more, depending on the need. We have the capacity and are prepared to cook 5,000 meals a day with no problem," Mook said.Fieri, alongside World Central Kitchen and BBQ Relief, are able to plan where help is needed the most by working with the Red Cross and the Salvation Army, who oversee the incident response.That way they can travel across the state to help everyone affected by the multiple wildfires."It's unbelievable to see what folks are going through, but it's even more unbelievable just how great this community is, and [to see] all these folks that have come together," Fieri said.Andrés is not in California, but he has been monitoring the situation and will fly in if needed."We got six chefs in Redding. Depending on the need we will bring more chefs and volunteers. We don't know what the next four days will look like, so he will be paying close attention," Mook said.Andrés recently left Guatemala, where he and his team were able to make more than 325,000 meals for those?affected by the volcano eruption last month.Mook said that even though the numbers can look a bit overwhelming, the volunteers get inspiration and passion to help those in need from all the support they receive from the communities."At the end of the day you just have to start somewhere, and just start cooking, cooking until everyone is fed," Mook said.As for Fieri, he takes pride in all the folks who drop everything just to help."We're in tough times ... with all of the things going on, you take a moment like this and you really see America is made of a lot of great people coming together," Fieri said. 3252
As school districts across the country prepare to return to school, small businesses that rely on child visitors are closely watching."We're probably at about 15-20% of the business that we normally do. It has been a real gut-wrenching, heart-wrenching moment," said Susan Shaw, owner of The Art Barn in Georgia.When the pandemic hit in March, she thought her business would only be on a month hiatus. Shaw, who goes by Farmer Sue, quickly realized that wasn't the case."By the end of the month I realized we are not going to be back to normal. The schools, our entire spring was lost and 95% of our summer is lost and 100% of our fall is lost because no one is going to be coming out on field trips," said Shaw.The Art Barn provides art and agriculture entertainment for children throughout the year. Shaw hosts birthday parties, school field trips and even teaches at private schools in the afternoon. They, like Benton Family Farms in Kentucky, rely almost entirely on birthday parties, field trips and summer camps to keep their businesses running.Benton Family Farms says their camps ended up getting canceled."Nothing. Five weeks of camp, every weekend of birthday parties, all of our mobile trailers going out. Our mobile trailer was going out to day care centers, churches and libraries," said owner Mary Marcum.Marcum says every single scheduled event they had was canceled. Marcum has been running educational programs on the farm her parents owned for 72 years."For eight weeks now I thought, gosh what can we do? Because my husband does most of the books and he’s said, 'You're in trouble. You’ve got to do something.' And I had done goat yoga about three years ago, but I didn’t have the time," said Marcum.Marcum ended up turning to that one program she felt could hold up during the pandemic: goat yoga."Goat yoga! People were like, it's almost outdoors, it just has a cover over it. It was an open barn and they started coming!" said Marcum.The twice weekend sessions are helping Benton Family Farms pay for some of the feed for their animals. Marcum is now taking donations, holding auctions online and creating any limited outdoor programming she can to try and stay open. So far, only about 180 people are coming out to visit the farm a month. Compare that to their normal of 4,000 people a month. "You're talking about a parent and a child. At 4,000 that’s ,000. I can do all the little things I want but there’s a lot that’s just too much to make up," said Marcum."There were a lot of tears, more prayers and then more tears and then it was finally in mid-June I was able to grab my bootstraps and say, ‘No, you made this business from absolutely nothing, a crazy idea no one thought would work. Girl get your gumption and get going,'" said Shaw.The Art Barn is also trying to be creative with programming to bring people back to her farm during the pandemic. Shaw is creating educational videos of her programs that can be used as a virtual field trip for school districts across the country."There literally will be a field trip online and we’ve broken them into the five stations so the school can purchase, rent those videos and go online," said Shaw.Small businesses like The Art Barn and Benton Family Farms are desperately hoping that schools will allow field trips again soon. Right now, they aren't expecting any student visitors this fall but are hopeful that COVID-19 rates will at least be low enough for field trips to resume in the spring. 3489
As Starbucks prepares to close its stores later this month for mandatory racial-bias training, an incident in suburban Los Angeles is showing why that training is needed.A barista at a Starbucks in La Ca?ada Flintridge is accused of printing a racial slur on a Latino customer's drinks on Tuesday.Priscilla Hernandez told CNN that a co-worker at the restaurant where she works went to the nearby Starbucks and bought drinks. It's a coffee run they make just about every day.The co-worker ordered a white chocolate mocha and an iced caramel macchiato and told the barista his name is Pedro, Hernandez said.But she said that when he brought back the drinks, she noticed that "beaner" was written on her drink instead of Pedro. "Beaner" is a derogatory term for Mexicans in the US."I asked him if he realized what they had put on his cup. He said no. So I was really upset about it, because that isn't OK," she said.Hernandez said she called the store and they told her their employee couldn't understand what Pedro had told them. They also offered a gift card."Out of all the names they could've put on his coffees for 'misunderstanding' him they decide to put 'beaner,'" she said, noting that the Starbucks employees apparently understood Pedro well enough to get his drink orders right.Hernandez followed up with a complaint to Starbucks on Twitter. The company soon responded."Thank you for letting us know, Priscilla. This is not the welcoming experience we aim to provide, and we have reached out to this customer to apologize and make this right," Starbucks said on Twitter.Hernandez said she and Pedro met with the chain's district manager Thursday morning. She said the manager was very apologetic and promised to investigate the incident.Hernandez told CNN that Pedro declined to comment for this story. Starbucks has not responded to multiple requests for additional comment.The coffee chain is planning to close all 8,000 of its company-owned stores on the afternoon of May 29 so it can provide racial-bias training to its 175,000 employees.The training was announced in response to the arrest of two African-American men last month at a Philadelphia Starbucks while waiting for a business meeting.
