This year's National Voter Registration Day was the largest in history, in part, because businesses assisted people to register or update their information. Many businesses say it's their duty to help people vote.Tanger Outlets in cities such as Daytona Beach, Florida, San Marcos, Texas and Savannah, Georgia, held registration events for shoppers coinciding with National Voter Registration Day. This year, records were smashed on National Voter Registration Day as 1.5 million voters registered, and hundreds of those were through the Tanger Outlet event.“It spoke to the traffic that the center saw that particular day, but we’re going to make this an annual event because of the returns they got,” says Stephen Yalof, president and chief operating officer of Tanger Outlets.“We’re very youth oriented, youth conscious in that we feel like the younger people in America have a voice and we want to make sure that we get a hold of them and make sure that they register and have a chance to have their voices heard when it comes to voting,” says Yalof.Tanger is just one of the many businesses that felt the need to get involved.“We’re very clear; we’re an ice cream company but we believe with adding a little bit of sweetness to assist the groups who are working on the front line who work to bring systemic change in the world,” said Jabari Paul, U.S. activism manager for Ben & Jerry'sBen & Jerry's, he says, does so much more than make and sell ice cream.“People can walk into our shops and there’s usually information somewhere up in the shop that informs you of the issues we care about, the issues our partners are working on," Paul said. These days, Paul says, that issue surrounds voting. Their "Scoop Shops" around the country are also called "action stations." Part of the campaign involves sending a text to easily check your registration status.“We believe businesses have a role to play in helping create a better society and that role can go far beyond corporate giving, and businesses have a huge platform they can lend in terms of uplifting very important issues,” says Paul.“You’ve seen so many people this year step it up, and I think you know, we’ve had some good corporate partners and efforts simply because people want to do their part and it's needed,” Ben Hovland, chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, said. The bipartisan, independent group focuses on elections and how they're run around the country. In the early days of the pandemic, there were serious drops in registration because places where people register, like the DMV, were closed. So, Hovland says, the help from businesses is critical.“This year you saw a lot of - a real outpouring of community participation, both government officials, the EAC is a partner in that effort,” Hovland said. “Civic groups, also corporations, celebrities, sports teams just promoting this idea of voter registration and for people to get registered.”Depending on where you live, you may still be able to register or update your registration, which is critical to being able to make sure your vote counts. 3107

These days, you can sit on your couch and get a pretty accurate answer to the age-old question: “What’s my trade-in worth?”As online used car retailers streamline the buying process, they’re creating more convenient ways to handle car-buying’s Achilles’ heel, the trade-in. And, with the current used car shortage caused by the pandemic, you might get a surprisingly high price selling your car to them rather than trading it in.You don’t have to sell, of course; you’re just finding out what your trade-in is worth in the most accurate way possible — the price someone will actually pay. Here’s what the process looks like, and how you can use the results.Places to get a quote onlineAlthough there may be other places in your area to trade in or sell your car, there are currently three companies dominating online used car sales: Carvana, Shift and Vroom. These companies allow you to self-appraise your car and get a quote to either sell your car or trade it in for one of theirs. The transaction and paperwork are touchless. Not all these companies are nationwide, and your vehicle will be inspected by a company representative — and the offer possibly adjusted — before you get your money.Another way to sell or trade your car is through CarMax, a used car superstore with outlets in 40 states and an in-person appraisal process that takes about 45 minutes. It may be easier to look up your car’s value on Edmunds.com, where you can get a CarMax quote without even having to go to one of its car lots.A real-world comparison testBefore starting the appraisal process, I checked pricing guide Kelley Blue Book, known as KBB, to get an idea of my cars’ trade-in values at a dealer, then collected online offers from CarMax, Carvana, Vroom and Shift. On these sites, you can fill in information manually or supply your car’s license plate number or 17-digit vehicle identification number to fetch precise year, make, model and trim. They’ll ask you about options on the car, color, if the car has been smoked in, and any warning lights or body damage. You’ll typically get an offer in minutes. Here are the results for my 2014 Volkswagen SportWagen TDI with 41,000 miles:KBB trade-in estimate: ,213.Lowest purchase offer (CarMax): ,700.Best purchase offer (Carvana): ,067.I ran the same numbers for my son’s 2016 Mazda3 Sport with 72,732 miles:KBB trade-in estimate: ,085.Lowest purchase offer (Vroom): ,750.Best purchase offer (Shift): ,100.And a friend let me run his 2019 Honda Civic Si with 4,200 miles:KBB trade-in estimate: ,225.Lowest purchase offer (CarMax): ,700.Best purchase offer (Carvana): ,077.As you can see, pricing is highly variable. The more sources you contact, the better.Do you really get that much? These companies promise a no-haggle, fair price for your trade-in. But does the price change when the company’s representative shows up and goes over your car with a fine-toothed comb?Sometimes, sellers omit important aspects of their car’s condition such as frame damage from an accident or rust, says Toby Russell, co-CEO of Shift. In these cases, after a physical inspection, the price is reduced. However, there are times when a customer gets more for a car because market conditions have changed. If a customer is transparent when describing a vehicle’s condition, “we don’t anticipate having to make adjustments to our offers,” says Carvana spokesperson Amy O’Hara. “But we are prepared should the situation arise.”Online comments on sites such as Reddit support these statements. Most consumers found the trade-in or sales process at these companies to be fast, transparent and convenient.Don’t forget the sales taxWith these figures in hand, you are in a position of strength when you visit an actual dealer. In most states, if you trade in your car, you pay sales tax only on the difference between the cost of the new car and your old one. If your new car is ,000 and you are getting ,000 for your trade-in, you pay sales tax on the difference: ,000. In a state with a 10% sales tax, you saved ,000 by trading in.That should be a consideration if a dealer’s offer doesn’t quite measure up to the offers you get online or through CarMax.Let the dealer make you its best offer. Tell the used car manager, the internet sales office or the salesperson that you’ve already appraised your car on pricing guides and gotten quotes from online retailers. You don’t need to share the offers you have — just ask for their best price.Factor in the sales tax before you reject anything, but with backup offers it’s easy to walk away, sell the car independently and return with cash to strike a better deal.More From NerdWalletWill You Get a Refund If COVID-19 Closes Your Campus?College Going Online? TIJUANA, Mexico. (KGTV) -- Migrants in Tijuana took shelter from the rain Thursday beneath tarps and in tents as shelters remained overcrowded. Photos taken by 10News show makeshift camps where migrants hid in tents while others shielded themselves with tarps as rain drenched the area. Many of the migrants waiting to claim asylum say they’ve lost hope following a clash Sunday in which hundreds of migrants rushed the border in a show of force. PHOTOS: Migrants in Tijuana take shelter from the rainMeanwhile, Mexico’s President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s government signaled earlier this week that it may be willing to house migrants while they apply for U.S. citizenship. Mexico’s new foreign minister is also putting pressure on the Trump administration to contribute to development projects that would help create jobs in Central America. The Associated Press contributed to this report. 911

This past spring, teachers from West Virginia to Oklahoma walked out of their classrooms and onto the steps of state capitols to protest low pay, overcrowded classrooms and cuts to school funding.Oklahoma teacher Jacobi Crowley was one of the teachers who participated in the strikes.“I dunno if I can be a 20 to 40-year educator,” says Crowley. “I love my job and what I do, but if things do not get better, I might have to start looking at a different career.”If things go the way he hopes this November, he will have a different career as a state senator, one who sees education as priority number 1.“We have to be fully funded,” Crowley says. “That’s the number one thing.”Crowley is one of hundreds of teachers nationwide who decided to run for public office this year. In Oklahoma alone, more than 100 teachers filed to run, and over half of them made it through their primary races in June.“They are getting frustrated with seeing the lack of support, the lack of funding and the lack of leadership out of state legislators in Oklahoma City, making those things possible for educators to be successful,” Crowley expresses.Educators say it’s a frustration that’s been building for years. In 2011, teachers staged a walkout and camped out for weeks at the Wisconsin State Capitol, protesting Gov. Scott Walker’s bill that gutted their unions. Ultimately, they were unsuccessful. But Wisconsin’s Superintendent of Schools saw that as a catalyst and decided to take matters into his own hands.“I believe the best way to fix this is to have an educator as governor of the State of Wisconsin,” says Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tony Evers.Evers will take on incumbent Gov. Scott Walker this November.Cut in funding and teacher pay has been some of the core issues of the protests. In Oklahoma, Crowley—like many other teachers—works multiple jobs to pay the bills.“I’m a football coach, that’s one thing to make ends meet,” explains Crowley. “I’m a basketball referee; I work a side gig as a radio station.”However, Crowley hopes the voters of Senate District 32 will deem him worthy of just one. 2114

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — The Southern California country-western bar where 12 people were killed in a mass shooting and gunbattle will reopen more than a year after the tragedy.A gunman shot 11 victims during Nov. 7, 2018, shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill shooting in Thousand Oaks before turning the weapon on himself. A Ventura County sheriff’s deputy was wounded by the gunman then accidentally killed by a California Highway Patrol officer during the ensuing gunbattle. The Borderline’s owners say in a video posted Thursday they’ve decided to reopen the bar though they did not offer a timeframe. The owners say in the meantime, they will open a new location in Agoura Hills.Families of the dead and 248 survivors opened a public park memorial earlier this month.RELATED:San Diegan remembered on anniversary of Borderline shootingCoronado High School graduate killed in Borderline shooting remembered as a 'hometown hero'Ventura County sheriff's sergeant killed in Thousand Oaks shooting was set to retire soon 1036
