(KGTV) — President Trump stood by his demands for border wall funding, following a meeting with Democratic leadership Friday, ensuring more debate into the weekend over .6 billion for his border wall to end the government shutdown.In a press conference, the president discussed his meeting, calling it productive and saying he believed progress with Democrats had been made. However, House Speaker told reporters outside the White House that, "We cannot resolve this until we open up government, and we made that very clear to the president."Here are six takeaways from President Trump's press conference:On the government shutdown...During his meeting with Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, President Trump confirmed he said the government shutdown could last for months or even a year or longer."I don't think it will, but I am prepared," Trump told reporters. "I hope it doesn't go on even a few more days. It really could open very quickly."He added later that the government wouldn't reopen until the issue of border security and wall is solved. "What we save on [the USMCA] just with Mexico will pay for the wall many times over just in the period of a year, two years, three years. I view that as absolutely Mexico is paying for the wall."Bypassing Congress for the wall...When asked about granting himself emergency powers to construct the wall, President Trump said he had already considered it, but want to negotiate with lawmakers first."Yes, I have. (KGTV) — Los Angeles police are searching for the person behind the fatal shooting of an off-duty officer early Saturday.An officer was flagged down just before 1 a.m. over reports of a shooting in the area of Avenue 26 at Humboldt St. in the Lincoln Heights area. The officer found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds, one of them identified as off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer Juan José Diaz."It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm the off-duty LAPD Officer has passed away as a result of the shooting. A 7-year-old Guatemalan girl died last week, hours after she was taken into Border Patrol custody, the Department of Homeland Security said.The Washington Post first reported Thursday that the girl died of dehydration and septic shock last week in El Paso, Texas after she was taken into custody by Border Patrol after crossing illegally with her father into the United States."Our sincerest condolences go out to the family of the child," the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees Border Patrol, said in a statement."Border Patrol agents took every possible step to save the child's life under the most trying of circumstances. As fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, we empathize with the loss of any child."The girl and her father were part of a large group of migrants who approached Border Patrol agents in a remote area of the New Mexico desert last Thursday, the newspaper reported, citing US Customs and Border Protection records.The child began having seizures hours after she was taken into custody and was airlifted to the Providence Children's Hospital in El Paso, CBP told the Post. 1119

A 13-year-old middle school student from Elkhorn, Nebraska was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of terroristic threats. According to a release, the student made non-specific threats on a national social media gaming website on Wednesday. After he was questioned Wednesday, he made similar non-specific threats again on Thursday on a different social media platform. The student was booked in the Douglas County Youth Center. Because of his age, his name was not released. Elkhorn Public Schools released a statement: "On Wednesday, law enforcement investigated an Elkhorn Valley View Middle School student regarding a nonspecific threat made on a national social media gaming website. Elkhorn Public Schools administration cooperated fully with local law enforcement throughout the investigation.  Elkhorn Public Schools takes all threats seriously, and in this situation, at no time did we feel students were in immediate danger. Parents of the student affected received an email on Wednesday afternoon, informing them of the situation." Captain Wayne Hudson with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said deputies will be patrolling schools more closely in upcoming days given the alleged threats. Hudson says law enforcement agencies across the nation are not taking any potential copycat shooting threats lightly and encourage people to report any suspicious activity. "The whole thing of, if you hear something, say something — we need that information. As we saw in Florida, it seems several kids had information," Hudson said. "They knew this individual had made certain comments and certain threats — especially kids.
