SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Legoland debuted a new land for youngsters as well as a train attraction for park guests Thursday.Park officials welcomed in the addition of Duplo Playtown and a new mini-locomotive in a ribbon cutting with families from Ronald McDonald House Charities. A special check presentation of ,000 was also made to Ronald McDonald House. The park says the new Duplo Playtown will give guests the best views of Miniland U.S.A. from high atop the theme park. The land is geared for kids five and under and features ten interactive areas with sounds and games to entertain.The new mini-locomotive, the Legoland Express, was also unveiled. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It was more than a decade after two-year-old Jahi Turner disappeared.His mother, Tameka, had been posted on deployment with the U.S. Navy in 2002. Step-dad Tieray Jones claimed the boy vanished while playing with other kids at a park in Golden Hill, while Jones was buying a drink at a vending machine.Police thought otherwise, suspicious that Jones had severely punished the boy for bed-wetting and he died. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Inside Richard J. Donovan State Prison's 30-foot concrete walls, metal doors, and electrified fence is the Echo Yard. It's drawn attention as one of the state's most innovative programs for bringing together inmates of different security levels on the premise that they will coexist peacefully in exchange for some freedoms.The Echo Yard, the state's first non-designated yard, also aims to keep released inmates out of prison.Around 50 percent of people convicted of a crime in California are sent back to prison within three years, according to a 2019 state auditor report. Members of Echo Yard get greater access to self-help, educational, vocational, and rehabilitative programs through courses like anger management, victim awareness, job hunting, and money management. Early recruitment efforts were sluggish when the program was introduced a few years ago.While the prospect of better resources and a possible early release sounds promising, inmates had difficulty embracing the concept of sharing spaces with a potential rival."When we first interviewed maybe about 900 guys, we probably got about 30 of them that said, 'yeah, I'll give it a try' ... because they know prison politics are alive and well," said Daniel Paramo, a former warden at RJD.WATCH: Menendez brothers help paint massive mural as part of innovative prison programThe rules in the Echo Yard are far removed from the prison politics and policies made up by inmates designed to help keep the peace. Instead, the Echo Yard emphasizes inclusion. There is a ban on gang affiliation and racial segregation. It also welcomes transgender inmates and those convicted of sex crimes.Inmates of various backgrounds are housed together regardless of their designation (Sensitive Needs Yard or General Population). One of the men that entered into the experimental program said the environment is a culture shock."There’s so much diversity here; it’s a shock to the system…I am adjusting, but it’s rough," inmate Mike Briggs told the California Innocence Project blog.In 2018, the California Innocence Project said 780 men transitioned into the program, which is made available to those that demonstrate good behavior or show a commitment to Donovan's prison jobs. 2261

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's survival of the fittest once again for gyms and fitness centers across the county as San Diego braces for stricter pandemic-related restrictions that go into effect Saturday.One gym preparing for the big shift is major chain 24 Hour Fitness. While members can't choose from their dozens of locations to workout, seven county locations will be open and offering outdoor equipment to members."We're committed to staying outdoors, staying safe, and the well-being of our members is the priority," said 24 Hour Fitness district manager John Amato.Amato told ABC 10News that member visits will be reservation based with 90-minute windows, minimized to 57 guests at a time.While many prepared for what's to come, others like gym owner Tom Green of Green Speed Training in Eastlake did the opposite. Instead of expanding his outdoor space for members, he doubled the square footage on the inside, even though guests won't be allowed to workout indoors until the county falls in a less restrictive tier."It's certainly risky, but I've always been kind of a risk taker and I go with my gut instinct, and if I feel good about it, I go for it," Green said.Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Green said support from the Eastlake community along with members of his gym have helped keep things afloat and allowed him to upgrade indoor space."It's very supportive, and we have a lot of great clients who really support what we're doing,” said Green.Regardless, both gyms said they'll continue to be there for their clients no matter which tier San Diego slips into next."To get that one-hour workout in, and de-stress to stay healthy, that's what our goal is,” said Amato. 1691
