ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) — Homicide detectives were investigating after a woman was shot and killed in a quiet Alpine neighborhood on Saturday.Around 2 p.m., a resident heard a scream and called 911.San Diego Sheriff's deputies found a woman's body lying halfway out of the passenger seat of a car in front of a neighbor’s driveway in the 3000 block of North Victoria Drive.Deputies detained a man on foot about a half mile away with two hand guns, said Lt. Rich Williams, San Diego County Sheriff's Homicide Unit."The suspect in this case has been identified as forty-two-year-old Paul Paraschak of Alpine," said Williams.Paraschak has been arrested for one count of murder and booked into the San Diego Central Jail, where he is being held without bail. A man in Florida called police while Collier County Sheriff's deputies were chasing him Tuesday morning.The sheriff's office report said it all started because the suspect acted suspiciously. The sheriff's deputy went up to the car and smelled a smell similar to marijuana.The deputy spotted a baggie that contained a green leafy substance. The suspect then grabbed the bag, put it in his mouth, and sped away."I need help, please," said Aric Frydberg, the man who was arrested after the 7-mile pursuit on U.S. 41. "There's a police officer chasing me," he added.Fort Myers-based WFTX obtained the 911 call. The operator tried numerous times to get Frydberg to pull over.But during the phone call, Frydberg tried to get the operator to make some calls on his behalf. The first set of calls was to his parents."Call my mom, call my mom," said Frydberg. "Please call my mom," he added while on the phone.Then he took it a step further and wanted to speak to the president.  "Donald Trump is a close friend of mine," said Frydberg. "We made a deal," he added while he was trying to convince the operator.Frydberg then changed gears and tried a different strategy.  "My mom called me and said she was in a car accident in Homestead," he said. "My flesh and blood was in a car accident and I have to stop and help you," Frydberg added.Deputies eventually got him off the road and phone.The report goes on to say the deputies searched the car and found glass pipes with burnt leafy residue on them. They later field tested the particles and it tested positive for marijuana.Frydberg is being charged with tampering with evidence, resisting an officer, and two counts of battery of an officer. 1744

After months of being separated from her elderly mother due to COVID-19 visiting restrictions in nursing homes, MJ Ryan decided she had to find a way in. Her plan: get a job working in the laundry room of her mom's nursing home.Ryan is a senior director for a large healthcare company outside of Boston making six figures, but the minimum wage job allowed her to spend priceless hours with her 90-year-old mother, Theresa. Theresa had been suffering from Alzheimer's for the last few years and was recently moved to The Friendly Home in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.All across the country, seniors are suffering in isolation, as restrictions to keep them safe from COVID-19 are taking a serious toll on people’s mental health.“They’re dying of broken hearts. They’re dying of abandonment,” Ryan said about the current situation facing this nation’s elderly population.Through brief phone conversations, Ryan could tell that her mother’s condition was quickly deteriorating. Theresa survived getting COVID-19 earlier in the spring, but she was forgetting things more often and becoming disinterested in talking to her children or even getting dressed.“She wanted to get out of those walls, and I said we couldn’t because there’s a virus and I would explain to her what was going on. She says, ‘Well what’s the difference? This is a slow death,’” Ryan recalled of her conversation with her mother.Realizing she may not have time on her side, Ryan became determined to somehow see her mom. When she heard about a Florida woman who got a job working in her husband’s care facility, Ryan decided to try the same thing.After talking to the Friendly Home, she realized the facility had several open positions they needed to fill. Nursing homes across the country are currently facing severe staffing shortages. So, this healthcare professional took a job doing laundry in her mom’s facility.Ryan worked once a week on Thursday nights, an 8-hour shift that made her realize how important frontline workers in care facilities are.“Every one of those people work so hard and most of them work multiple jobs to keep food on the table,” she said. “Seeing it firsthand, it’s amazing.”On her dinner breaks and in between washing clothes, Ryan was able to spend time with her mom. It wasn’t much, but she could tell that even that small bit of time spent with her mom was enough to brighten her mood.“She didn’t have a lot of concept of time and space, and I just wanted her to know we weren’t gone. That her family was still there,” Ryan said about the experience.When Theresa passed away on Nov. 1 from Alzheimer's, Ryan was there.“Now, I live with the sadness of losing her, which everyone does at some point, but I don’t live with regret,” Ryan said about the loss of her mom.Ryan hopes others might be inspired by her story and do the same.“There’s so many things that go on in a nursing home that people could do that are necessary for the care of residents, that make you feel good about doing it, make you feel good about helping the residents and allow you in to see your family member,” she explained.Even though her mom has passed away, Ryan is remaining on-call to help whenever the nursing home is short-staffed.Instead of flowers at Theresa’s funeral service, people were asked to donate to an emergency fund the family started for frontline workers at the nursing home. 3373

After losing her mother to COVID-19, a comedian has launched a mask-wearing crusade.Through a pixilated image on her iPad, Laurie Kilmartin strained her eyes desperately hoping to see her mother’s chest rise on the other end of their Facetime call, but after five minutes of silence, Laurie knew the coronavirus had won.Joanne Kilmartin died alone inside a California nursing home.After an hour of crying into her screen, Laurie and her sister told doctors it would be okay to end the call. They had spent the last 69 hours on FaceTime with their mom, knowing the end of her life was near.“Facetime makes this noise when it closes out and it closes out immediately, it doesn’t go to a corner and fade away. So, my mom just disappeared. There was this noise and she was pulled back into the universe,” Laurie said via a Zoom call from her home in California.Just weeks earlier, Joanne, 82, was enjoying her evening vodka martini at Laurie’s home where she’d been living. The 82-year-old had some underlying health issues but for the most part was doing okay, until one day when she started suffering from shortness of breath.Knowing what she knows now, Laurie says she likely would’ve never let her mom be checked into a short-term care facility after being discharged from a local emergency room.“It didn’t occur to me at all that this was still running through nursing homes like that,” she explained.When Joanne was checked into York Healthcare & Wellness Centre in Highland Park, California, not a single person had COVID-19. But just days later, dozens of patients had suddenly contracted the virus. After testing positive, Joanne’s condition quickly went downhill.“I couldn’t rescue her. Had I known what would happen, I would’ve gotten her a hotel room and hired a nurse,” Laurie lamented.By the time it became clear that Joanne wasn’t going to survive the virus, doctors set up an iPad in her room. Laurie and other family members would spend hours just watching their mom breath, offering words of comfort at any hint of movement. All of it done virtually in an attempt to keep the virus from spreading.COVID-19 has robbed families of the opportunity to grieve together in person.“My mom got the worst send off and at the end we were only voices that we hoped she could hear. It’s a terrible way to say goodbye to somebody, it doesn’t feel real,” Laurie said about her mom’s death.But Laurie has tried to find some purpose in her pain. As a professional comedian with a large online social media following, she decided to chronicle her mom’s final days of Twitter. It was an effort, she said, to educate the public about the true scope of the kind of suffering the virus causes. Laurie has even used her platform to criticize people who push back against mask-wearing policies.“To someone who doesn’t want to wear a mask, you’re incredibly selfish, you’re harming yourself. Even if you think, ‘Oh it’s just old people,’ do you want to lose an old person like this? Is this how you want your grandma or grandpa to go out?
