OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Outside the Star Theatre in Oceanside is a recently completed mural designed exclusively for the space and ushering in a wave of public art. "We want to create a place where people can feel welcome," said Gumaro Escarcega with Main Street Oceanside, the group that started the project called "Art that Excites."Their goal is to fund 10 new murals at places all over downtown Oceanside. The funding comes completely from events hosted by Mainstreet Oceanside and donations.LIFE IN OCEANSIDE:Oceanside's brewery scene helps spur city's growthFrom 'Ocean Side' to region's third-largest city5 places to spend the day in OceansideMayor Pete Weiss talks Life in OceansideAs for the artists, Escarcega says, "This project is open to the public, open to anyone who is willing to work as a muralist."The community ultimately votes on their favorites. In the case of the Star Theatre, the winning design was one from a local artist named "Skywalker.""The idea here is to create a nice, beautiful, public art piece that tells a story," explained Escarcega. The next mural is planned for Northern Pine Brewing and That Boy Good BBQ.For more information on Oceanside's murals, visit Main Street Oceanside's website. 1237

One of the men convicted of killing Michael Jordan’s dad, James Jordan, will be paroled in 2023, according to multiple reports.Larry Demery and his friend Daniel Green were arrested and tried for murder in the 1993 shooting death of James Jordan. The elder Jordan had stopped at a rest stop for the night to sleep while on his way home from a funeral. Prosecutors said Demery and Green shot him, stole his car and then got rid of his body.In 1996, Demery and Green were sentenced to life in prison. Demery was spared the death penalty at the time because attorneys claimed he did not pull the trigger and he felt remorse, according to the Raleigh News and Observer. Demery pleaded guilty and testified against Green.North Carolina’s Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission released a short statement announcing they approved Demery to take part in a vocational and scholastic program as part of parole. His release date is set for August 6, 2023.Demery was sentenced under old guidelines and is eligible for parole. Convicts serving life sentences for murder in North Carolina are no longer eligible for parole.Michael Jordan spoke emotionally about his dad’s death during “The Last Dance”, a docu-series based on Michael’s career, focusing on his last season with the Chicago Bulls.Michael said that his father was "the voice of reason that always drove and challenged me," and his death changed Michael's life forever. 1435

OCILLA, Ga. — A nurse at an immigration detention center in Georgia says authorities performed questionable hysterectomies, refused to test detainees for COVID-19 and shredded medical records.Advocacy group Project South has filed a complaint with the Homeland Security Department's internal watchdog that relies heavily on the nurse's words. That nurse, Dawn Wooten, worked at the Irwin County Detention Center in southern Georgia. In addition to holding detainees for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, it also serves those arrested by the U.S. Marshals and the Irwin County Sheriff's Department. In her complaint, Wooten called a gynecologist who works outside the facility, "the uterus collector." She claimed that nearly every inmate who saw the doctor received a hysterectomy and claimed the doctor removed the "wrong ovary" on at least one patient.Wooten said it was unclear if the patients — particularly immigrant women — knowingly agreed to the procedure, which would prevent them from having children in the future. She says she saw a sick-call nurse shred a box of detainee complaints without looking at them.Wooten claimed she was eventually fired from the facility for raising concerns about COVID-19. She said she was demoted after she missed time for presenting symptoms of the virus. She claims that inmates were likely infected with the virus at a rate much higher than reported because the facility declined to use two rapid-testing COVID-19 machines. Wooten said no staff members had been trained to use the machines and she only saw them in use once.U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it will defer to the Homeland Security inspector general."That said, in general, anonymous, unproven allegations, made without any fact-checkable specifics, should be treated with the appropriate skepticism they deserve," the agency said in a statement.LaSalle Corrections, a private company that owns and operates the facility, did not respond to The Associated Press' request for comment. 2013

The first iteration of the pier was constructed in the late 1880s, but major storms have force major rebuilds of the pier. The current version is Oceanside's fourth pier. Visit the amphitheater at its entrance, where visitors may catch musicians or cultural performers, or head all the way to the end of the pier for a bite at Ruby's Diner. In between, fishermen cast off and visitors look out from the pier and try to spot dolphins, seals, or sting rays in the waters below.California Surf Museum: Founded in 1986, the California Surf Museum has showcased a collection of surfboards and surf rarities, making one of the richest treasure troves of surf history ever. Head over on the first Sunday of the month and admission is free. Oceanside Sunset Market: Every week, residents head down to Pier View Way to enjoy Oceanside's Sunset Market. The event comes every Thursday from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m., giving visitors the chance to enjoy the scenic sunset alongside delicious foods and desserts, live entertainment, and local shopping. More than 200 merchants span four blocks, boasting an array of fun, unique, and delicious finds. The free market also features fun for kids with a special "KidZone" packed with activities.Visit the Graves House: The famed home is known for its role in the 1986 action flick "Top Gun," as the home of "Charlie." The classic Victorian home, featuring architecture rarely seen nowadays, was built nearly 137 years ago. But depending on when you venture out to see it, it may be gone. The home is being relocated to Pacific Street to make room for the Oceanside Beach Resort. And you may visit as the home is still being restored, but its future has swirled with rumors that it could become an ice cream parlor. 3097
