(KGTV) — Burglars raided the home of a cancer survivor in Lakeside, stealing her road bike days before she was planning on competing in a triathlon.In a home off Valle Vista Road, Susan Sterger made a wrenching discovery on Sunday night."When I walked into my bedroom, everything was torn apart." said Susanna Sterger, choking back tears.She and her roommates were cleaned out. Laptops, jewelry, clothes were stolen. She ran to the garage and her heart sank."Just felt really angry and violated," said Sterger.Missing from the garage: her triathlon bike, wet suit, running clothes, and even her shoes - everything she needed to compete in a triathlon on Sunday in Solana Beach."Everything I worked so hard for, I thought was taken from me in one moment," said Sterger. Four years ago, she experienced another heart-stopping moment: a diagnosis of cervical cancer.She went through many rounds of chemotherapy. The cancer returned five different times. "It's been really hard not to give up," said Sterger.She didn't and this May, doctors told her she was in remission. She began another battle - another tests of sorts - to train for a triathlon, her second in nine years."I want this with everything in my body," said Sterger.It's a goal she thought she'd never reach after the burglary. But through social media, something remarkable happened. Friends and strangers lent and donated her everything she needed, including a bike rental for the day."Don't have the words to describe the gratitude in my heart ... and I will be at that start line Sunday!" said Sterger.Sterger says neighbors saw a large group of teenage boys walking out of the home carrying stuff that night. (KGTV) - Scientists at the Sanford Consortium at UC San Diego will send brain tissue to space on Saturday, as part of the latest Space X launch."It sounds like science fiction, but it's actually happening right now," says Dr. Alysson Muotri, the Director of the UC San Diego Stem Cell program.He's leading a research team to study how zero-gravity environments will affect brain growth."We know from several previous studies that the human body has not evolved to deal with micro-gravity," Muotri says. "We suffer under these conditions. And the brain is also vulnerable."Muotri's team uses stem cells to create microscopic brain-organoids, tiny brain cells that will grow like a human brain.They'll send 100 of the brain-organoid cells to the International Space Station for 30 days.When the cells return, the scientists will compare them to similar cells grown in the lab on Earth, to find any differences caused by a month in space.Muotri says this study is key to helping humans in the quest to live off of Earth."The cells might age faster," he says. "That's a consequence of being under micro-gravity for long periods of time. So the brain might age. That might make you susceptible to cognitive decline, dementia or maybe Alzheimer's."Muotri says it's also essential to find out how a developing brain would grow because it could impact any pregnancy and gestation that happens in outer space."The human brain during gestation grows in a speed that's amazingly fast," says Muotri. "In space, we think that will be aggravated. It will be even bigger. So you can imagine a baby with a large brain, it might not pass through the birth channel. (KGTV) -- The Citizen Public Safety Oversight Task Force of La Mesa met Wednesday virtually, following two high-profile incidents involving the city's police department.The recently formed group is tasked with looking at whether La Mesa needs a police oversight committee and then decide what it will look like.The group's chair, Jamal McRae, realizes they are a temporary task force, but hopes it rolls over to become the permanent commission."We're still trying to educate ourselves as to what our committee will do, as far as, will be able to have subpoena power? Do we want subpoena power? We're still in the research phase." McRae said. "We're trying to determine whether we want to put this on a ballot to have individuals on the city vote on it, or if we wish the city council will just have the final say.McRae points out the idea for the task force came before the controversial incidents involving La Mesa police officers, and before the national calls for police reform following the death of George Floyd."We're a group of individual citizens that got together and wanted to make a change in the community after the Helix High School incident," McRae said. "So we have been running through some ideas for a few years, just among community members."McRae says the group understands the importance of their work and the urgency to complete their tasks. That's why they have scheduled three meetings next month. The meetings are scheduled for July 1, July 8, and July 15.They hope to present a plan and a sense of direction to the city council by the end of July. 1596

LA MESA, Calif. (AP) — A man who police say brandished a gun from a van and a woman who then crashed the car with five children inside, injuring them, have been arrested. A person on Friday night reported that a man in La Mesa had a gun inside a moving vehicle. Police say an officer later tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over. Shortly thereafter, the car crashed. The officer pursuing the suspect found five children inside without car seats. Police say the children suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for further tests. 573
