This year, numerous NFL teams are tailoring their venues for a very distinct group of spectators – those who otherwise might not be able to join in. While the sights and sounds of attending a sporting event can make it an unforgettable experience, Traci Schneider knows it’s not for everyone. “For a lot of people that can be really, really overwhelming.” It’s why more and more teams are adding sensory rooms to their venues. We were given access to one at CenturyLink Field, home to the Seattle Seahawks. “This is a place to go and a place to be safe and kind of just a little break to get away from it all,” explained Schneider. “So, any fan can come in here.” Schneider’s 17-year-old son Ben has autism. “Sensory issues are a big challenge for him, and I know what that looks like as a mom,” said Schneider. “And you want to make the world a little bit easier for your kids to navigate.” She helped provide input for this space, because not only is she a mom of a child with autism, but she’s also married to the Seahawks’ general manager. Schneider says the room is meant to help people with autism, anxiety, PTSD and other sensory disorders. “We still have a TV so people can still watch what’s happening out on the field,” Schneider said. The Seahawk’s room features dimmable overhead lighting, hooded chairs, a calming bubble wall and a fiber-optic waterfall curtain. “They slowly change colors and they’re meant to be touched,” Schneider said. All of the items help to calm a person. In addition to the sensory room, the Seahawks are the first to offer autism kits that include noise cancelling headphones and information on when the loudest moments in the game are expected to happen, including pyrotechnics. Schneider says the ultimate goal is to provide a safe space for anyone who may need a temporary reprieve without making them feel like they’re missing out. “So just knowing that that is supporting our fans and making them feel welcome. A California man was arrested over the weekend after allegedly making a mass shooting threat to get out of going to a county fair with his parents, authorities said Saturday.According to the Pomona Police Department, Erik Villasenor emailed the Los Angeles County Fair staff on Friday afternoon and made false threats of violence.Pomona Police Chief Mike Olivieri said the email read, "Hello I was told that someone was planning on doing a mass shooting on Sunday at the fairgrounds. I just wanted to inform you guys already."The Sylmar, California, resident was suppose to go to the fair with his parents Sunday, Olivieri said at a press conference. Investigators believe he sent the threat in order to get out of going to the event with his family."Though he's 22, he felt it was appropriate to send this threat ... we believe it was with the intent it would spark some chaos and commotion, be captured on the media, and use it as an excuse to his parents to not go to the fair," Olivieri said at the Saturday press conference.Villasenor admitted it was a hoax when authorities tracked him down, police said."This is a great outcome for the fair and it really provided us an opportunity to test the kind of security systems we have worked so hard to create," said Miguel Santana, the president and CEO of Fairplex, the venue where the fair is held.Villasenor was arrested on a charge of making false threats and was booked at the Pomona County Jail. A Fordham University student who fell about 30 feet from inside a clock tower early Sunday has died, school officials said.Sydney Monfries was climbing the school's iconic clock tower in Keating Hall about 3 a.m. when the fall occurred on the Bronx, New York, campus of the Jesuit university. The senior, who was critically injured, was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital."There are no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise — and mere weeks from graduation," university President Joseph M. McShane, said in a statement. "Fordham will confer a bachelor's degree upon Sydney posthumously, which we will present to her parents at the appropriate time."A mass was scheduled to be held for Monfries on Sunday evening at Fordham University Church.
