The US Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday it is investigating a possible connection between e-cigarette use and seizures in younger users. In a public notice the agency reported "a recent uptick in voluntary reports of adverse experiences with tobacco products that mentioned seizures occurring with e-cigarette use (e.g., vaping)" signaling "a potential emerging safety issue."Since June 2018, the FDA said it has "observed a slight but noticeable increase in reports of seizures" connected with e-cigarette use."After examining poison control centers' reports between 2010 and early 2019, the FDA determined that, between the poison control centers and the FDA, there were a total of 35 reported cases of seizures mentioning use of e-cigarettes within that timeframe," the notice says. "Due to the voluntary nature of these case reports, there may be more instances of seizure in e-cigarette users than have been reported."FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb released an accompanying statement explaining why the agency was releasing the information."We want to be clear that we don't yet know if there's a direct relationship between the use of e-cigarettes and a risk of seizure. We can't yet say for certain that e-cigarettes are causing these seizures," he said."We're sharing this early information with the public because as a public health agency, it's our job to communicate about potential safety concerns associated with the products we regulate that are under scientific investigation by the agency. This also helps encourage the public to voluntarily report additional adverse events that can better inform our work." 1656

Thousands of islands dot the Pacific Ocean between Asia's southern coast and Australia, and the people who live on them have stayed mostly isolated from the digital age.The assumption by many internet providers is that "there's not many people there, they don't need connectivity, and there's not a lot of money," Christian Patouraux, the founder and CEO of satellite startup Kacific, told CNN Business.Patouraux said he knows that to be false.Six years ago, he founded Singapore-based Kacific after he saw a market analysis that showed the Asia-Pacific region is starved for internet access, and people are willing to pay for it.Now, they are several steps closer to getting that access. On Monday evening, a SpaceX rocket launched Kacific's first satellite from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Patouraux said it could soon bring consistent internet connections to as many as 1 million people for the first time.Internet for islandersThe biggest obstacle to extending broadband across the Asia-Pacific is one of topography: Broadband is delivered primarily by copper or fiber optic cables, including some that stretch under the Atlantic Ocean. There’s a lot of money in marijuana, and a lot of dispensaries only deal with cash. “We do around ,000 to ,000 thousand a week,” says Andrew Jones, manager of Nature’s Herbs in Denver. When you do the math, this Denver-based dispensary is handling more than ,000,000 a year, and all of it is cold hard cash. “It’s a billion-dollar industry, and there’s so many moving parts,” Jones says. Moving that amount of money is one of the biggest challenges for dispensaries around the country. Marijuana is still illegal under federal law, which means a lot of dispensaries can’t open accounts with traditional banks. Instead, many dispensaries are now hiring specialized companies to move their money somewhere safe.“Our background is former law enforcement. Former military," says John DeLue of Helix TCS, a security company specializing in the cannabis industry. "We’re trained in transport procedures."DeLue has gone from busting people for weed as a deputy sheriff to now making a living transporting it. “You were taught as a cop that weed was bad and marijuana was bad and you shouldn’t have anything to do with it,” he says. “And then we left law enforcement and started in the weed industry. So, it’s been a huge change.”DeLue says his team uses armed security guards to take pot and money from pot sales to an armored truck. They then drive it to wherever the dispensaries owners want it, including private vaults. “We’ve grown four-or-five-fold since we started in 2015,” he says. “We went from a few hundred thousand dollars a year in revenue to now around .5 to .5 million in revenue.”And as more states legalize marijuana, more people might soon be using these services. 1701

The owner of Schick razors needs to close the gap with Gillette, its biggest rival. So it's turning to new blood to make that happen.Edgewell Personal Care is buying the upstart razor maker Harry's, the two companies announced Thursday. The deal values Harry's at nearly .4 billion.Harry's started in 2013 and quickly expanded by selling low-priced razors online. Edgewell, meanwhile, owns some of the most established brands in the field — including Schick, which started in 1921. Edgewell also owns Wilkinson Sword, a major European brand that has been making razors since 1898.But Edgewell trails its main rival, Gillette, by a large margin. Gillette is a unit of Procter & Gamble, and accounted for about 10% of that company's .8 billion in revenue — about billion — last year. By comparison, Edgewell reported .2 billion in revenue during its most recent fiscal year.Sales for the first six months of this year fell 7% compared to a year earlier, Edgewell reported Thursday. But CEO Rod Little told investors that the company expects revenue to rise to .7 billion in its first full fiscal year after it acquires Harry's. The deal is expected to close early next year.Little said Edgewell was drawn to Harry's success with building a brand and marketing directly to consumers."We've been talking about it for a while," he said on an earnings call. "And when you look at what Harry's has done, we've looked at that from afar for a long time," he told investors."The deal also could help Harry's cut costs. Despite its success, Little said the business is only approaching the breakeven point this year.Investors didn't immediately embrace the purchase. Shares of Edgewell fell nearly 13% in midday trading Thursday.Harry's founders Andy Katz-Mayfield and Jeff Raider will stay on to run the combined companies' US business. Raider was also one of the founders of the eyeglass maker Warby Parker. The two of them had been friends since college.Harry's is not the first razor startup to be acquired by a more established company. In 2016, Unilever bought 2083
