SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A shark advisory is being issued Tuesday after witnesses reported seeing a five-foot-long shark near Black's Beach. According to Mónica Mu?oz with San Diego Fire-Rescue, the advisory is in place from the Mushroom House north to Bathtub Rock, also known as Flat Rock. “Some witnesses reported seeing a shark of about five feet in length which does not reach the threshold of a significant threat. However, the number of witnesses and the feeding behavior observed influenced the lifeguards’ decision to issue the advisory,” Mu?oz said. Just after 12:30 p.m., a group of 25 surfers got out of the water at Black's Beach after reportedly seeing a shark eating a sea lion. Another group of people reported similar information to a lifeguard. In the same area, Mu?oz says lifeguards witnessed a large sea lion eating a fish. The department says there were either two separate sightings in the area, or witnesses all saw a sea lion feeding on a fish, but mistook it for a shark. “We are acting out of an abundance of caution,” Mu?oz added. Lifeguards are conducting active patrols in the area to let people know what witnesses saw. Mu?oz says lifeguards are advising against water activity; however, the water is not closed to people who choose to enter. Signs will also be posted in the area. 1316

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After thousands of Art Institute of California - San Diego students were let down by the institute they trusted, some faculty members are left wondering if they'll receive their final paychecks.Student worker Stefon Harris was waiting for a check on Friday that never came. “Just been checking and checking and checking and it never showed up, it never showed up. I only have in my account," said Harris. The for-profit college abruptly shut down on March 8. The school's operator, the for-profit Argosy University, shut down the campus after court documents alleged it misused millions of dollars in federal funds.“it was shell-shocking, you don’t plan for stuff like that," said Harris. On Monday Harris received a letter from the court-appointed receiver for Dream Center Education Holdings (DCEH), the parent company of the Art Institute. The letter says that given the financial circumstances funds have not been secured and pay is delayed. The letter goes on to say they are doing everything they can to expedite payment for funds owed. 1073

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- After months without any organized sports or youth activities, the San Diego Junior Lifeguard program resumed Monday under strict guidelines to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.For Addison Watson, it was a day she thought would never come. On Monday, she joined hundreds of other kids to take part in the San Diego Junior Lifeguard program.“I’ve been sitting in my room on a desk with my computer, staring at a screen. This is nice to be outside,” Addison said.When the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down, there was a concern there wouldn’t be a program this summer.However, organizers pressed on and prepared just in case. Once the green light was given by San Diego County health officials, they had everything up and running.The program opened up with health measures in place, including having families do health screenings at home. Additionally, each participant and the entire staff will have to go through another health and temperature screening on site each day.Participants and staff are also required to wear masks and will have to follow social distancing guidelines. To help with distancing, the program will be spread out at more locations.The participants will also be broken up into smaller groups -- unlike before, they will stay within this group to keep the interaction to fewer people.Heather Rabe, program manager for the San Diego Junior Lifeguard Program, said, “We're following an operational safety protocol plan that we've been developing and working on and adjusting as new guidelines have come out for the last two months.”10News was also told other agencies within the state and outside of California will use this similar model when it comes to their aquatic programs. 1735

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — About 90 dogs are heading across the country to San Diego to remove them from the path of Hurricane Delta in Louisiana.The dogs will land at Gillespie Field on Thursday as part of the effort to evacuate the animals before the storm hits the northern Gulf Coast, according to the San Diego Humane Society. Once they touch down in San Diego, 60 dogs will be taken to SDHS and the rest will be taken to Rancho Coastal Humane Society, the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility, the Department of Animal Services, and Labradors and Friends. Once the dogs are medically cleared and behaviorally assessed, they will be made available for adoption."We are grateful we can help these animals and alleviate some of the stress on the shelters in Louisiana," said SDHS President and CEO Dr. Gary Weitzman. "They are just recovering from Hurricane Laura and now there is an even bigger threat. When we all work together, we can help more animals and that’s what we are here for."The flight is made possible by the nonprofit Wings Of Rescue, which helps fly endangered pets from high intake or high-kill shelters to no-kill shelters.Last month, SDHS, RCHS, and Labrador and Friends took in 130 dogs and cats from Louisiana as well."An animal emergency is an animal emergency, no matter where or when it happens,” said Rancho Coastal Humane Society President Judi Sanzo. “Hurricane-ravaged Louisiana called for help — just weeks after the last airlift brought more than a hundred animals to San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego Navy training school has been closed after a third sailor with ties to the location tested positive for coronavirus.The Navy said the sailor, who tested positive for COVID-19 on March 14, is stationed on the USS Essex and was attending Training Support Command San Diego.
