SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Del Cerro woman had a rare - and timely - encounter outside a Halloween display on her morning walk Tuesday. Liz Harley and her friend Terry Finstad spotted an owl in the middle of the street, transfixed by a light show of bats on the side of a home. “It was just so cool,” Harley told 10News. Harley and Finstad have been walking together for 25 years, since their children were small. Now they’re both grandmothers and keep their tradition alive. During their walks, the two have seen all kinds of wildlife: coyotes, rabbits, skunks, raccoons. At first, Harley thought the owl was a cat, but then she noticed its head spinning. “We just watched it,” she said. “We wondered, what is it doing?” The owl spent several minutes absorbed by the flying bats, oblivious to Harley’s golden retriever. Harley and Finstad walked on, and when they passed through the area again, the owl was gone, leaving only feathers behind. “Kind of reminded me of Harry Potter,” Harley said. Harley, who usually goes to the gym on Tuesdays, is glad she chose to stay close to home. “I was rewarded for walking this morning.” 1130

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A College Area homeowner got a huge shock when he returned home from a camping trip: The presence of some uninvited guests.Bill Yogerst left Saturday at 12 p.m. from his home on Catoctin Drive. On Monday morning, he got a call from his roommate, who had also been out of town, telling him the grates on the outside of the granny flat had been damaged.     Inside the house, there was one disturbing discovery after another.    "There was a trail of dirt in the shower. They had urinated on the toilet. He also found shoes and some sweatpants in his hamper that didn't belong to him. Also throughout the house were odd shrines of carefully positioned, mismatched household objects."That is skin-crawling creepy," said Yogerst.The feeling didn't go away when he reached the bedroom."I looked at my bed and it wasn't made. Sheets were pulled down and the pillows rearranged and stacked ... realized they were sleeping in my bed ... a creepy feeling of violation," said Yogerst.The intruders in this twisted Goldilocks tale: A homeless couple in their 20s. Neighbors spotted them in the driveway on Sunday. Yogerst says they found his hidden spare key and walked right in."It was like a Holiday Inn. They were enjoying their stay," said Yogerst.Yogerst says the presence of homeless in the area has increased in the past two years."Some of the churches, God bless them, do feed them, but that does bring them in," said Yogerst.Yogerst says only a few items were taken, including loose change, toiletries, and prescription medication. One of the suspects has a distinct description: A transient African-American woman, about 5-foot 5-inches tall, with bright orange hair. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The two owners and two employees of San Diego-based pornographic website GirlsDoPorn.com were charged with federal sex trafficking counts Thursday, with prosecutors alleging the defendants coerced and threatened the victims into appearing in online pornography videos.According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, numerous young women who initially responded to ads for modeling jobs were deceived by the defendants to appear in adult films.Once the victims learned the work involved pornography, the defendants allegedly told them the videos would be distributed to private clients, and not disseminated on the internet.RELATED: San Diego porn case: Civil trial against porn website operators beginsProsecutors say the women were "pressured into signing documents without reviewing them and then threatened with legal action or outing if they failed to perform." Others were not allowed to leave the shoots -- which were conducted at various San Diego hotels -- until the videos were completed, which sometimes involved sex acts the victims initially declined to perform, prosecutors say.Website owners Michael James Pratt, 36, and Matthew Isaac Wolfe, 37, are charged along with porn actor Ruben Andre Garcia, 31, and administrative assistant Valerie Moser, 37. The charges carry a maximum penalty of life in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Prosecutors say Pratt remains outstanding, while Wolfe was arrested Tuesday, and Garcia was arrested Wednesday. It was not clear when Moser was arrested, but the U.S. Attorney's Office said she is slated to be arraigned in San Diego federal court on Friday.In addition, FBI agents executed a search warrant Wednesday night at an office in the Spreckels Theatre Building in downtown San Diego, where prosecutors say the website operated from. The website and its sister sites allegedly generated more than million in revenue.The defendants are also currently involved in an ongoing San Diego civil trial in which they are being sued by 22 women who appeared in videos on the site. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Del Mar woman wants lifeguards to put more signage up on Dog Beach that warns of riptides after her dog was dragged out to sea."As the tide goes up it fills up and as the tide goes out it flows out," Deputy Lifeguard Chief Lifeguard Mark Rathsam said, describing the movement of water between the San Dieguito Lagoon and the ocean."If you get caught in that you're gone," said Mark Waters, a long-time surfer and volunteer surf club coach at Westview High School.On Wednesday, Joanne Goss took her 4-year-old Dachshund Hank and her rescued chocolate Labrador to the beach. A large dog started playing with her Lab as they were walking toward the ocean, steering clear of the fast flowing river below.The owner of the big dog tried to get his dog's attention. "When he threw the ball, the Mastiff ran, the Lab ran and Hank ran," Goss said choking up. Hank was ripped out to sea with the current.Goss sprinted into the water, soaking her fanny pack with her phone inside. Waters saw the danger and took off."Threw off all my clothes except my shorts and just ran," he said.He swam out into the fog hoping to find the dog, and hoping he wouldn't be too late."I thought I saw him get rolled over in a wave and then I heard the sound of a drowning animal," he paused, "that just pierced right into my bones and I was just like, 'Oh my god, I've got to hurry."Swimming faster, he finally reached Hank."He was the happiest dog on the planet when that happened. He jumped up on my chest and he's up in my arms, so I kept him on my chest," Waters said.Hank was so excited he scratched Waters making him bleed. Waters said he knew the "big fish" like sharks wouldn't be in the area for an hour or so, and then he started to look around to get oriented. "I look back there's no shore, I looked in all directions, you can't see anything," said Waters.He stayed calm and laid on his back, holding Hank out of the water. He said he looked at his watch and knowing the tide, he would ride it back in in the next couple hours.Back on the beach, Goss felt sick to her stomach. "We lost sight of Mark, and I thought Mark had died," Goss said.She said she felt responsible.A friend of Waters called lifeguards. The friend comforted Goss, reassuring her Waters would be OK. Finally, they saw the rescue team return with Waters and Hank.Goss was overjoyed. She and Waters said they want more signage posted warning the public, especially visitors, of the dangers of the river.10News asked lifeguards what could be done. They said there's eight signs posted north of the river and two on the south side. Rathsam explained they don't want to post "so much that people ignore it, because that's what ends up happening, and not so little that people can't see it. So we strategically place it where it's the most visible."He also said with the huge change in the tide, it's nearly impossible to put more signage up without moving it by hand every few hours.Waters and Goss hope that by at least telling their story, they can get the word out, so their close call prevents a tragedy."It really made me feel good to save the dog, it really did and um it was probably one of the best things I've done in a long time," Waters said.Goss said she will be buying Hank a life jacket. 3279

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UCSD and Scripps Institution of Oceanography alumna Megan McArthur will head to space as the pilot for the SpaceX Crew-2 mission in early 2021, NASA announced this week.The Crew-2 flight will be the second SpaceX Crew Dragon flight to the International Space Station as part of NASA's commercial crew program.McArthur, who received her doctorate in oceanography from Scripps in 2002, traveled to space aboard the space shuttle Atlantis in 2009. She and her crew were part of a 12-day mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. McArthur operated the shuttle's robotic arm that grabbed and released the telescope, making her the last person to "touch" the telescope. She was born in Honolulu but considers California her home state. She holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from UCLA.The SpaceX Crew-2 flight will be her first trip to the International Space Station.Joining McArthur is NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough as mission commander with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Pesquet as mission specialists.McArthur is one of two Scripps Oceanography alumni who are astronauts. Alumna Jessica Meir returned from a visit to the International Space Station in April. The increase of the full space station crew complement to seven members will allow NASA to effectively double the amount of science that can be conducted in space.NASA's commercial crew program is working with the American aerospace industry as companies develop and operate a new generation of spacecraft and launch systems capable of carrying crews to low-Earth orbit and the space station.
