Police departments across the country have been getting more diverse, but there are conversations happening now about further improving diversity in new officer hiring.A new analysis from The Washington Post finds many major police forces are still whiter than the communities they serve.For example, in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, 49% of residents are racial minorities, but 83% of officers are white. And in Philadelphia, 77% of the population is non-white, but 59% of officers are white.University of Maryland criminal justice professor Maria Velez has been researching the impact of this as it relates to crime.“In communities that are predominantly African American, as percentage black goes up in a neighborhood, that's often been thought of as a risk factor for violent crime, but what we find is that in cities where there is, representation in terms of the city council, having a black mayor, having a civilian review board, having prior levels of unrest actually renders that relationship insignificant,” said Velez.She says when cities have more minorities on their police force, that signals accountability and receptiveness. And that filters down to the neighborhood level where it starts to create a sense of trust.“At the end of the day, this is good for both the communities and the police right, because the police need to be able to do the work that they need to do to help with things related to crime, but they can only do that if the community trusts them and is willing to engage with them and work with them,” said Velez.She stresses having more black and Latino officers is a step in the right direction. PANAMA CITY, Fla. — A father and daughter were arrested on Tuesday in Panama City, Florida on charges of incest.Panama City Police arrested 39-year-old Justin Bunn and 19-year-old Taylor Bunn just before 11 a.m. on Tuesday.According to arrest records, the father and daughter were seen having sex in their backyard on Wakulla Avenue on February 18.On Tuesday, investigators say that both Justin and Taylor admitted to having consensual sex, arrest records state.Both were arrested and charged with incest. Justin's bond was set at ,000 and Taylor's bond was set at ,000. During a court appearance on Wednesday, a judge ordered that the father and daughter may not have any contact with each other. 729

Police in Omaha, Nebraska are looking for a suspect vehicle in connection with a shooting at the Irvington Walmart just before 5 p.m. Wednesday that left a 21-year-old woman dead.Kayviaun T. Nelson died after a shooting in the parking lot of the Walmart near 99th Street and Military Avenue, just off Interstate 680, with a child reportedly in the vehicle. OPD are looking for a 2001 bronze Chevy Malibu with license plate VVT-545.Police closed down the Irvington Walmart for hours Wednesday evening while conducting their investigation around the store.Police said they believe some type of disturbance occurred at a different location and the suspect in the shooting followed her to Walmart.Officers later worked with store management to clear all customers from the Walmart location just off Interstate 680 North and prevent anyone else from entering the location. OPD said they expected the store to be closed for a few hours while they review surveillance video. An OPD forensics unit arrived at the scene just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.  1116

Police are continuing to investigate an explosion outside an Episcopal church in southeast Texas.A package was detonated Thursday outside a building at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, the Beaumont Police Department said."We are very blessed that no one was injured," said Rev. (AP) — Officials in Nevada are identifying a 55-year-old man found dead under a vehicle they think may have collapsed on him due to earthquakes last week in nearby Southern California.Nye County Sheriff Sharon Wehrly (WER'-lee) said Thursday that investigators might never know for sure what caused Troy Ray to become pinned beneath his Jeep outside his trailer home in rural Pahrump.Sgt. Adam Tippetts says in an internet post that Ray was last seen alive at a nearby gas station July 3.A day later, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck near Ridgecrest, California, followed by a larger 7.1 temblor on July 5.Ridgecrest is about 95 miles (153 kilometers) west of Pahrump.Tippetts says Ray's death was ruled an accident resulting from asphyxia and blunt trauma. 780
