at STEM School Highlands Ranch, Colorado made his first court appearance Wednesday afternoon, and the student killed days before his senior year was set to end was identified by his parents.Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock, 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler and Gov. Jared Polis hosted the news conference early Wednesday, flanked by their school and law enforcement partners, and told the northeast Colorado community reeling from another mass shooting to come together for the victims.“This does not define us. It won’t today and it won’t tomorrow,” Brauchler said, calling the latest shooting an “aberrant” act and urging the community to mourn, to support one another, and to continue to send their children to school.“Our hearts are hurting for them,” Polis said of the school community, adding that he felt “frankly sick” about the latest Colorado shooting.MORE | 891

in Hong Kong.CCTV's sports channel said Tuesday that it had "decided to immediately halt" broadcasts of the basketball league's preseason matches in China after it expressed its "strong dissatisfaction" over NBA Commissioner Adam Silver's response to Daryl Morey's tweet. The broadcaster is also reviewing its wider relationship with the NBA.Tencent, the NBA's exclusive digital partner in China, also said it would suspend live streaming for NBA preseason games in China. The controversy began when Morey tweeted his support for the demonstrations in Hong Kong over the weekend. His post, which has since been deleted, included an image that read, "Fight for freedom, stand with Hong Kong." The former British colony now controlled by China has been rocked by months of political unrest. Those remarks led several Chinese businesses to suspend ties with the Rockets, throwing that team's relationship with the country into doubt. That backlash triggered an initial response from the NBA on Monday. In a statement, the organization said that it recognized that Morey's views "have deeply offended many of our friends and fans in China, which is regrettable."But that statement, too, invited more criticism — this time from Americans. US politicians accused the NBA of kowtowing to Beijing to protect its financial interests. On Monday, Silver himself waded into the fray. He reportedly spoke to 1394

WOODSTOCK, Ga. – A 5-year-old boy with a brain condition took his first independent steps last weekend and a video of the precious moment is inspiring people across the globe.Camden Hanson’s mother, Mandy, tweeted the clip Saturday, “since we all could use a little happiness in our lives these days.” As of Friday morning, the video had garnered nearly 8 million views and more than 420,000 likes.Mandy says Camden has progressive cerebellar atrophy and is physically handicapped. When her son’s cerebellum doesn’t function properly, Mandy says daily tasks like forming words and balancing can be challenging.Mandy told the Today Show that doctors and therapists told her family that Camden would likely never walk independently. However, thanks to 10 therapy sessions a week, the little boy was able to prove them wrong with the walk through his living room in Woodstock, Georgia.Along with walking, speaking has also been a challenge for Camden. But with intensive therapy and a strong-willed attitude, Mandy says he has improved from using sounds to communicate to speaking in full sentences.Sadly, Mandy told Today that her son’s atrophy is getting worse and doctors haven’t been able to pinpoint a gene causing his condition. So, Mandy says Camden has joined the Undiagnosed Disease Network, a research study that works to provide families with more information about mysterious health conditions. This fall, Mandy says her son will start kindergarten in an inclusive classroom and the family hopes he’ll be comfortable with perhaps using only one crutch.Mandy says she never expected the video of Camden’s special moment to go viral, but she hopes the clip spreads awareness for her son’s rare genetic disease. 1724

he and his wife ordered through DoorDash."I was enraged and disgusted," Gianni Guglielmett said. The smoothie came from the Tropical Smoothie Cafe on Telegraph in Taylor, but Guglielmetti suspects something may have happened to the smoothie during transit to Allen Park High School.A family friend ordered two smoothies through the food delivery service while they were at the school for a sporting event. The family friend said she was surprised by how dirty and unkempt the delivery driver's vehicle was when he pulled up.She said she noticed the two smoothies were just sitting on the passenger side seat without a carrier or a bag, but she didn't notice anything unusual about her smoothie. However, Guglielmetti said his wife sucked up a pebble as she finished the last of their shared smoothie on the drive home from the sporting event. They opened the lid and found what they describe as "a number of pebbles," two pennies, and a couple of hairs.Chelsea McEwen, a general manager at the Tropical Smoothie Cafe in Taylor, said she carefully examined their store surveillance cameras and could see that the smoothies were made correctly.McEwen said she would be filing a complaint with the DoorDash driver.DoorDash released the following statement about the situation: 1272

World leaders in obesity research are optimistic about new guidelines out of Canada, which take a more holistic approach to diagnosing and treating obesity. One critical point is for doctors to stop relying on a person's body mass index alone for diagnosis.“Body mass index tells me how big you are. It doesn't tell me how sick you are,” said Dr. Arya Sharma, Scientific Director of Obesity Canada. “So, you can have two people with the exact same BMI numbers, two people, they are both 35, one person has sleep apnea, diabetes, hypertension, fatty liver disease, infertility whatever, and the next person with that body mass index has none of those problems.”Sharma says under these new guidelines, they are concerned that more people could be classified as obese. A person might fall under the BMI number for obesity but still have weight-related health issues.Currently, about 30% of Canadians are obese. In the United States, it’s about 42%.The head of the U.S. National Center for Weight and Wellness applauds the new approach.“That very well may be lead to a seminal shift in how the general medical population addresses obesity and for that, I think they really deserve a lot of credit,” said Dr. Scott Kahan, Director of the National Center for Weight and Wellness.Another critical issue the new guidelines address is weight bias among health professionals and people living with obesity.“Patients also tend to blame themselves, so they have an internalized weight bias, so the patients also think, ‘so this is my fault and I’ve done this to myself,’” said Sharma.Doctors say your body fights back against weight loss biologically, which is why Sharma says obesity is a chronic disease for which there is no cure but can be managed. And today, there are more proven treatments than ever, not diets.“The only reason why medication and surgery have much better long-term results is because they actually change the biology in the sense to make it much harder for the body to defend its weight,” said Sharma.Obesity is a complex disease that can be caused by genetics, psychological or environmental factors among others. 2133
