BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- A seminar was held Monday on the recently-published book of important documents from between April, 1948 and January, 2009 of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's political advisory body.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, met with participants attending the seminar. This year marks not only the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China but also the establishment of the CPPCC.     The book consists of 142 important documents which are divided into three volumes. BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Top political advisor Jia Qinglin has called on overseas Chinese businessmen to play their unique roles in promoting China's peaceful reunification.     Jia made the remarks on Wednesday in a meeting attended by representatives of the China Overseas Chinese Entrepreneur Association in Beijing. BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- China's Central Military Commission (CMC) conferred the rank of general on three senior military officers here on Monday, bringing the total number of generals to 174. CMC Chairman Hu Jintao awarded the officers certificates of command at the promotion ceremony. An order for the promotion was announced by CMC Vice-Chairman Guo Boxiong.     The senior officers are deputy chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Ma Xiaotian, political commissar of the PLA's Academy of Military Sciences Liu Yuan, and political commissar of Chengdu Military Area Command Zhang Haiyang. CMC conferred the rank of general on the three senior military officers here on Monday.     China began to confer military ranks to military and police officers in 1955, when Chairman Mao Zedong promoted 10 senior officers to the rank of marshal, a rank which was later abolished.     Premier Zhou Enlai then issued a decree conferring the rank of general on 55 officers in 1955 and one each in 1956 and 1958.     Only one veteran of the revolution that founded the People's Republic of China who was among the first group of generals is still alive: 104-year-old Lu Zhengcao, former vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.     In 1965, the CMC abolished the system of military ranks and then resumed it in 1988. Since then, 118 senior military and police officers have been promoted to the rank of full general.     Hong Xuezhi, who became a member of the CMC in 1988, was the only officer to receive the honor twice in 1955 and 1988.     The PLA recognizes 10 military ranks for officers in active service: general, lieutenant general and major general; senior colonel, colonel, lieutenant colonel and major; captain, first lieutenant and second lieutenant.

NANJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's chief justice Sunday urged the people's courts all over the country to attach great importance to the trial of major and serious criminal cases and timely handle them in strict accordance with the law.     Wang Shengjun, president of the Supreme People's Court, made the remark while attending a national workshop on hearing major and serious criminal cases held in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province.     Wang urged courts at various levels to be fully prepared for handling major and serious criminal cases, which is a heavy task at present and will be so in a certain period of time in the future.     Courts at all levels shall timely investigate and conclude major and serious criminal cases in accordance with the law to serve goals of safeguarding national security and social stability, Wang said.

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Clean streets replete with national flags, major road intersections adorned with ornate potted plants, Beijing is in gala attire early Thursday for the massive celebration commemorating the 60th founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China.     The event will showcase how the country explores the road of building socialism with Chinese characteristic in the past decades, and what great achievements it has attained.     A shower made the city clean Wednesday night and early Thursday morning after rain-inducing chemicals were fired into the sky above Beijing that was filled by smoke and vapor in the past two days.     Weather cleared up as of 9:00 a.m. and sunshine seems plenty for the well-prepared air force echelons to take off.     Hundreds of thousands of people are gathering on Tian'anmen Square and along Chang'an Avenue in central Beijing to experience the grandiose celebration that will boost their national pride.     Many people had an early rise Thursday morning to get prepared to watch the much-anticipated military and civilian parade either alongside the parade route or on TV. Entrances to affected subway stations are locked and taxis are not allowed to operate in the areas cordoned off.     Opposite Wangfujing Street, a prime shopping center in downtown Beijing, a miniature of the Bird's Nest, where the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games opening and closing ceremonies were held, was constructed. Right across the street, there stood the Haibao, mascot of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai.     Potted plants and flowers line up the streets while colorful posters are pasted on walls, and celebration slogans can be seen on billboards. There are also ornamental plants and plant structures in the shape of dragon, Great Wall, and all symbols of the country's pride.     The grand military parade scheduled to be held at 10 a.m. Thursday will be the 14th parade since 1949, the year when the People's Republic of China was founded.     The most recent massive parade was in 1999 when New China marked its 50th birthday.     Military parades normally feature a display of formations of the armed forces, as well as new weapons, artillery, tanks, armored vehicles, and aircraft.
