CINCINNATI — The Scripps National Spelling Bee is suspending the 2020 national finals in National Harbor, Maryland. The Bee recognizes the important responsibility to take action that protects the health and well-being of its participants including the spellers, their families, the local sponsors, employees of The E.W. Scripps Company and others who support the event known as Bee Week. The executive order from Maryland Governor Larry Hogan prohibiting gatherings of more than 50 people until the termination of the state of emergency in Maryland as well as recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention underscore the decision to suspend the national finals. The suspension includes all in-person events and the live national broadcast the week of May 24. If possible, the Bee will work with local sponsors, spellers, convention partners and ESPN to reschedule the 93rd Scripps National Spelling Bee for later this year. The world is navigating through uncertainty, and while the timing of the national finals is just outside the eight-week window recommended by the CDC, this is the safest and most responsible action. This was a difficult decision that unfortunately will disappoint students who have spent a great deal of time studying and preparing, along with their parents and teachers who have supported them. The focus now shifts to exploring all options to possibly reimagine a competition for later this year. The Bee will keep local sponsors, spellers, parents and teachers informed in the coming days and weeks through direct emails, 1582

Daryl Dragon, one half of popular '70s duo The Captain & Tennille, died Wednesday, according to his publicist Harlan Boll.Dragon, whose ever-present captain's hat left no doubt about which half of the duo he was, died of renal failure in Prescott, Arizona, Boll said."He was a brilliant musician with many friends who loved him greatly," Toni Tennille said in a statement. "I was at my most creative in my life, when I was with him."Tennille was at Dragon's side when he passed away, Boll said. The duo's best-known songs included "Muskrat Love," "Do That to Me One More Time" and "Love Will Keep Us Together."Dragon, a classically trained pianist, was most at home behind the keyboard. One of his early gigs was as a backup musician for the Beach Boys in the mid '60s.Dragon and Tennille met in 1971 when she hired him to play piano for a musical called "Mother Earth." They married in 1975, a year after they signed a deal with A&M Records.Their first album produced the hit single "Love Will Keep Us Together," which enjoyed multiple weeks atop the Billboard chart.Dragon and Tennille separated in 2013 and finalized their divorce in 2014. They remained close friends.Dragon is survived by his older brother, Doug Dragon, and two nieces, Kelly Arbout and Renee Henn.Boll asked that any donations being made in Dragon's name be made to organizations doing research into brain diseases and conditions such as Parkinson's Disease or post-traumatic stress disorder. 1483

During an emotional Staples Center memorial service for NBA legend Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka on Monday detailed text messages between him and Bryant, which may have been the last ever sent by Bryant. Pelinka said that Bryant had texted him while on board the doomed helicopter, which crashed into a Southern California hillside, killing Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, and seven others. The nine were en route to a basketball tournament where Bryant would coach his daughter Gianna’s team. Pelinka said he was at his church’s Sunday service at the time, where he normally does not check his phone. But Pelinka said he had the urge to check his phone as “a gentle, other worldly nudge compelled” him to open the message. Pelinka said that Bryant asked him if he knew of a certain baseball agent in Southern California. “Kobe texted back his desire to help a friend of his secure a baseball agency internship for one of his young daughters,” Pelinka said. “Kobe vouched for the girl’s character, intellect and work ethic; he clearly wanted to champion a bright future for her.” Pelinka responded back to Bryant to say he would put in a plan in place to get that done. “A handful of minutes later, Kobe and Gianna and seven other beautiful souls ascended into heaven,” he said. “Kobe had been texting me from the helicopter.“The girl in that text chain he wanted to help so badly was Lexi Altobelli, the surviving daughter of coach John Altobelli, who was on the helicopter. Kobe’s last human act was heroic. He wanted to use his platform to bless and shape a young girl’s future. Hasn’t Kobe done that for all of us?"Pelinka was one of Bryant's closest confidants. Before becoming the Lakers' GM, he was Bryant's long-time agent. Justin Boggs is a writer for the E.W. Scripps National Desk. 1843

Facebook has launched a civil rights task force and an election monitoring center to guard against interference in the 2020 presidential campaign and census, the tech giant said Sunday. The Facebook task force, chaired by COO Sheryl Sandberg, follows pressure from civil rights groups and minorities who say the company has not done enough to combat anti-democratic tactics such as voter intimidation and suppression. The US election team will be established by the end of the year. The moves underscore worries of a new boom in political interference as the United States enters a pivotal campaign season. And it reflects a growing push by Facebook to build decision-making structures inside and outside the company that can show it is capable of responsibly handling disinformation and hate speech and safeguarding user data.Sunday's announcement came as a leading civil rights expert released her second interim report in a multi-year audit of the social media company. The report, a copy of which was reviewed by CNN, said Facebook has improved in the way it incorporates civil rights concerns into its products, but raised questions about the long-term durability of those efforts."As the largest social media company in the world, what Facebook has committed to here is a consequential and important start," wrote report author Laura Murphy, a former legislative director of the American Civil Liberties Union. "But only if it continues to build upon what it is announcing today."Facebook promises to roll out a range of additional policies in the coming months reflecting the report's recommendations. Advertisements trying to persuade users not to vote will soon be forbidden, for example. The company will restrict how housing, credit and job advertisers may target users so as to prevent discrimination by age and gender, which has repeatedly been 1868
