SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) - Trial started Monday for the Yuma, Arizona police officer accused of raping a woman during a visit to San Diego.Jared Elkins, 34, is charged with eight felony counts of rape for the alleged incident in September 2017.The 23-year-old woman’s mother called 911 to report a crime at a home on Marlborough Street in Kensington. Elkins, who is related to the alleged victim by marriage, was staying at her home.Elkins, the alleged victim, and two other family members went to dinner then watched a movie while drinking beer and wine at the home before the alleged assault occurred, according to prior court testimony.RELATED: Arizona police officer charged with raping San Diego womanThe alleged victim testified during a preliminary hearing in April that Elkins physically forced her to participate in sex acts despite her pleas for him to stop. The two other family members were asleep in the house so small "you can hear someone breathing in the next room," the woman testified.During the alleged assault, the woman said she asked Elkins what would happen if she cried out for help. "He said, ‘I would kill you,"' the woman testified. After the incident, the woman said she found another family member in the house and they called police.At a hospital, the alleged victim's blood-alcohol level was determined to be .09 percent, according to witness testimony.Besides forcible rape, Elkins is charged with rape of an intoxicated person, forcible digital penetration, two counts each of forcible oral copulation and oral copulation of an intoxicated person, forcible sexual penetration and sexual penetration of an intoxicated person.Elkins -- a seven-year veteran of the Yuma Police Department who later resigned -- faces 14 years in prison if convicted, according to Deputy District Attorney Lisa Fox. 1834

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized Sunday after being shot in Chollas View. According to police, the shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. at an apartment complex near the 47th Street Trolley Station. 10News spoke to the victim's mother. She said her eldest son, Ricardo Dominguez was shot in the right hip. The bullet went through the main artery but missed his organs. She said Ricardo is now sedated at the ICU -- in serious but stable condition.Witnesses told police two cars were seen speeding from the area, but no word on whether or not the vehicles were involved in the shooting.Ricardo Dominguez's mother has set up a fundraiser page. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Barrio Logan business is on a mission to help students become the first in their family to go to college. Called the Barrio Logan College Institute, the business helps kids learn how to get into college. The program began in 1996 and helps students from third grade all the way through college. So far, 204 students have participated in the program. The programs offered are free, but parents are required to donate their time. The business began out of the need to help students in underserved communities. According to the institute, only three percent of adults age 25 and older in Barrio Logan have a bachelor’s degree. The institute also says only 38 percent of those 25 and older in the community have a high school diploma. Through the institute, many students have been able to go on to attend college. 88 percent of students who have gone through the Barrio Logan College Institute’s College Success Program remain in college working toward a degree. For now, the institute is focused on moving to a new location within the Barrio Logan Community, so far raising .1 million of the needed .5 million to buy the building. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old was hospitalized Saturday night after being shot at a gas station in Skyline. Police say the shooting happened at an Arco station near South Meadow Brooke and Paradise Valley Road. According to police, the victim and his friends were walking through the parking lot when one of them was shot. Witnesses told police an argument broke out between the victim and three other teens when one of the three boys, who are all under the age of 18, shot the 16-year-old in the stomach before running away. The 16-year-old was taken to the hospital where he is expected to survive. 613
