A coughing Pope Francis told pilgrims gathered for the traditional Sunday blessing that he is canceling his participation at a week-long spiritual retreat in the Roman countryside because of a cold. It is the first time in his seven-year papacy that he has missed the spiritual exercises that he initiated early in his pontificate to mark the start of each Lenten season. The 83-year-old pontiff, who lost part of a lung to a respiratory illness as a young man, has canceled several official engagements this week as he battled an apparent cold. His weekly appearance Sunday to pilgrims from a window high above St. Peter’s Square was the first time he has been seen publicly since Ash Wednesday, when he was seen coughing and blowing his nose during Mass. 768

Twice a week at CrossFit Inferno on California’s Central Coast, mothers go through an hour-long high-intensity workout that’s designed by moms for moms. “So, today we have mom bods and WODs,” said exercise instructor Kassi Heidemann. WODs is an acronym for “workout of the day.” “I have a 5-year-old boy and he’s the light of my life but he’s also a lot of work,” Heidemann said. Heidemann is a big believer that athletics can help improve emotions – especially for postpartum moms. “When my little guy was super little there was a lot of stress,” she said. “So, you can tell they’re wound up, pent up, not aggression just stress in new moms.” That stress can be somewhat relieved with these meatgrinder workouts. “It helps my sanity a lot because I’m with these two all the time,” said new mom Elaine. Elaine says she finds her peace and also her pulse racing during the workouts. The mother of two says there’s no shaming at the gym – it’s more celebrating. “Coming here you get to talk to other moms and just get out and be social and exercise so it helps with self-esteem, too,” she said. But doing deadlifts and squat presses for time – how much is too much too soon? “Exercising is very important for all people, especially mothers,” said Terry Krause, MD of UCHealth. Krause says typically after childbirth mothers should start slow and wait at least six weeks before any rigorous activity. “When you’ve been pregnant for a while and delivered a baby, your body is not the same as it was previously,” she said. “So, you can’t necessarily jump right back into a triathlon.” A mother herself, Krause says a mom’s health is paramount for the health of the entire family. “Not only do you need to be healthy because you’re a person and you matter but your baby needs a mom your baby needs a mom who feels good about being a parent,” she said. As the workout was coming to an end at CrossFit Inferno, Heidemann said the more moms workout, the more they change both physically and emotionally. “You see just their face, you see the way they carry themselves,” she said. “They walk around just so much more confident.” And by embracing their own health, Heidemann says these moms are role models.“Their kids actually see and their kids will actually know this is my mom,” she said. “She’s strong. She’s confident. And she takes care of me.” 2361

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Could foreign parts in voting machines be putting the U.S. election at risk for hacking? It’s a question that lawmakers have been exploring as they seek answers from top bosses at three major voting manufacturers. Tom Burt, the President and CEO OF Election Systems & Software, appeared confident as he testified before the House Administration Committee last week. “We’ve seen no evidence that our voting systems have been tampered with in any way,” said Burt. The companies that make vote tabulation systems say they welcome federal oversight of election infrastructure and need help securing their supply chains, especially for voting machine parts made in foreign countries. “Several of those components, to our knowledge, there is no option for manufacturing those in the United States,” explained Dominion Voting Systems CEO John Poulos. Cyber and national security experts say antiquated and paperless voting machines pose the most significant risk to the U.S.’s election infrastructure. Matt Blaze, a Professor of Law & Computer Science at Georgetown University, testified before the committee that even the scanners that record paper ballot selections can be tampered with. “It’s simply beyond the state of the art to build software systems that can reliably withstand targeted attack by a determined adversary,” said Blaze. In the wake of Russian meddling in the 2016 election, congress is pumping nearly a billion dollars into making voting machines safer.“We're definitely in a much better position today than we were at the end of 2016,” said Liz Howard, an attorney with the nonprofit, nonpartisan Brenan Center for Justice in Washington. She also testified at last week’s hearing. “So, no machine is 100 percent secure. Election officials’ goal is to make the most resilient election system that they possibly can,” said Howard. Some are calling for regular election audits, more resources for state voting officials and the phasing out of all paperless voting machines. The Brennan Center estimates only about half of the states that used paperless voting machines in 2016 will continue to use them in 2020. Those eight states include Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, Tennessee and Texas. Some assert that requiring a paper ballot is the only way to have a reliable back-up of each vote. “We absolutely need to have a paper record of every vote cast. Right. And that is a foundational election security measure,” said HowardWith top U.S. intelligence officials warning that foreign powers like Russia and Iran are intent on undermining American elections, experts say there is at least widespread agreement that election security is national security. 2745

1) When does daylight saving time end?Daylight saving time ends Sunday, November 3 at 2 a.m. when clocks will fall back one hour to 1 a.m. This means that sunrise and sunset times will be one hour earlier starting Sunday. It also means that there will be an extra hour to sleep Sunday morning. 2) Who is affected?Almost all Americans, except for those in Hawaii, most of Arizona and U.S. territories, will need to make sure their clocks move back an hour. Many electronic devices, such as televisions, computers and smartphones, will automatically move back. Non-digital clocks will need to be reset manually.3) Why is daylight saving time necessary?Depending on whom you ask, it is not. What daylight saving time does is shift an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. Governments implemented daylight saving time as a measure to conserve energy. While Americans conserve some energy in the evening with more daylight, research has found that the benefit is negated by increased energy usage in the morning.4) Why not have daylight saving time year round? It has been tried before. Most recently, President Richard Nixon implemented year-round daylight saving time in 1974 as America was affected by an energy shortage. The act ended in 1975 as Congress established a standard practice for daylight saving time, allowing for winter mornings to have more daylight, so more people could go to work and school in the daylight. Also, the legislature in Florida approved year-round daylight saving time in 2018, but the proposal needs approval of Congress. Several other states are also considering petitioning Congress to eliminate daylight saving time.5) What is the history of daylight saving time? Many consider Benjamin Franklin as the inventor of daylight saving time, though he only suggested that Parisians wake up earlier to enjoy more of the daylight, and to conserve candle wax. According to the University of Washington assistant professor of economics Hendrik Wolff, Germany during World War I was the first nation to implement daylight saving time. The practice spread to America during World War II. The European Union voted earlier this year to end daylight saving time as soon as 2021. Member nations could decide to move its standard time up an hour, effectively making it daylight saving time year-round. 2340
