SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- High School sports in the fall has been a big question mark due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and next week, the California Scholastic Federation is expected to make a decision as to whether the students athletes will be taking the field. But one local head coach is encouraging parents to step up, and voice their opinion on the matter. Scripps Ranch football coach Marlon Gardinera, has formed "Letfamiliesdecide.org"."So if everybody really wants the kids in school, what we have to do is give them a voice in letting them get back to high school sports. As an example, at Scripps Ranch High School, ninety-four percent of the families said not only do they want their kids back in school, but they want them on campus."Currently, coach Gardinera says the number of players has increased at the Falcons summer's workouts"Parents are deciding they want their kids on campus. Thirty percent more of them are sending their kids out to football this summer. The kids have been cooped up in the house, and parents want them participating in a controlled activity."Of course with safety being the number one priority."We take everyone's temperature, and we ask them five symptom related questions before we let them loose. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Economic forecasters are beginning to warn of a possible 2020 recession, and the impact they say will be felt in the Golden State, according to a new report by UCLA.“Don’t celebrate the 3.1% GDP growth estimate for the first quarter of 2019,” writes UCLA Anderson Professor Emeritus Edward Leamer. Leamer is quoted in a recent report produced by the UCLA Anderson School of Management. According to Leamer, the data actually increases the risk of a recession at some point in the next couple of years. Nationally, economic growth is expected to slow marginally to 2.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2019 and 1.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2020. So what picture does the report paint for California? One forecaster says you can expect California unemployment to rise modestly. “Weakness in housing as well as the slowing U.S. economy is reflected in a very modest growth rate in the U.S. in late 2020,” UCLA Anderson Forecast director Jerry Nickelsburg writes. “As a consequence, we expect California’s average unemployment rate to rise slightly to an average of 4.6% in the first quarter of 2021. For the entire year for 2020 and 2021, we expect average unemployment rates of 4.3% and 4.4%, respectively.”Meanwhile, personal income growth in the state of California is forecast at 2.9 percent in 2019. But the report warns that income growth is expected to slow to 1.9 percent by 2020.It’s not all bad news, however, income growth is expected to rise fairly quickly again in 2021, and is forecast to reach 2.1 percent by the end of the year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dozens of workers are racing to finish construction of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's newest exhibit, "Walkabout Australia".It is scheduled to open to the public Friday, May 25. Monday, 10News was the first station invited for a behind-the-scenes tour. The various habitats are meant to reflect the deserts, plains, and rainforests of Australia.But the heart of the exhibit is a large open area in which 20 kangaroos and wallaby will be able to roam free with Safari Park guests."I think that the public will feel like there's virtually no barriers almost on the walkway going up and when they get inside. They're just going to have so much fun," said San Diego Zoo architect Robyn Badger.Zookeepers have been working with the animals before the exhibit opens, getting them comfortable with their new habitat and with being around humans.The kangaroos and wallaby are likely to approach guests on the path. If it happens, guests are asked to stay calm and avoid harassing the animals.While people are not encouraged to reach out to touch the animals first, if the animals make contact, it is okay to gently pet them."If you're calm and you're respectful of those animals, they're absolutely going to want to come and see what you're up to," said Animal Care Manager Steve Metzler.Other animals at Walkabout Australia include tree kangaroos, magpie geese, and cassowary. 1398

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Friends of the Marine hit and killed in the Midway area said Monday the driver who struck him and left is a coward.Victor Molinar, 18, of Chicago had just graduated from boot camp and was stationed at Camp Pendleton about to start combat training. Ricardo Camacho met him in basic training and got the terrible news over the weekend.“He was a good kid, always say making people laugh. He had a good head on his shoulders. From the start when I met him, I knew he’d be a good Marine," said Camacho.Molinar was out with his friends Saturday night visiting the local night spots on Midway Drive and somehow got separated from his friends. They went to look for him and found his body in the road.Police say the driver who hit Molinar fled the scene. No suspect has been identified.“He was willing to give up his life defending his country and do all the right things and for him to do that and not even stopping to see who it was? It just sucks," Camacho said.Camacho told 10News the Marines have a buddy system and doesn’t know why Molinar was by himself. Police are looking for the suspect, but have little to go on right now. Camacho, who is having a hard time coping with his loss, told 10News he knows one thing about the suspect. “He’s a coward. Bottom line. Karma plays a big part in things, and he’ll get his. If he ran then he won’t come forward they’ll just have to find him. If he didn't do it then. He won’t come forward. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hiring is increasing in San Diego County with local employers adding jobs in all industries, the San Diego Workforce Partnership reported. The most recent U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics show unemployment dropped to 3 percent in April, as San Diego County gained 7,800 jobs month-over-month. The largest increase was posted in the construction field, with 2,200 jobs added. The boom was likely due to improving weather in April after an unusually rainy winter, experts said. Other growing industries included Education and Health, and Professional and Business, which added 1,000 jobs. The Government and Leisure and Hospitality fields each grew by 900 jobs. The smallest growth was reported in the Information field, with 100 jobs added in April.
