NEW YORK, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama here on Tuesday to exchange views on bilateral ties and other important issues of common concern.     The Chinese president said at the start of their meeting that China-U.S. relations are now showing a sound momentum of development, and the two countries are developing a positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship.     A sound China-U.S. relationship is not only in the interests of the two countries, but also conducive to peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia Pacific region and the world at large, Hu said. BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Monday stressed the growing of autumn and winter crops at an executive meeting of the State Council.     The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council would continue to strengthen the fundamental status of agriculture and boost the support for agriculture and grain output, according to the meeting.     All provincial areas and departments should put into practice the central government's policies, especially policies for the benefits of farmers, according to the meeting.     Despite uncommon droughts and the global economic recession, China was expected to have a big harvest this year, underpinning the country's stable and fast economic growth, according to the meeting.     Although China reported grain output increase for continuous years, the relationship between grain demand and supply would be strained in the long run as China's infrastructure for grain output was not stable, the grain planting efficiency was relatively low and natural disasters were frequent, according to the meeting.     Autumn and winter planting was key to next summer's harvest and even next year's harvest and measures should be taken to promote grain output, according to the meeting.     The measures should include promoting subsidy policies and stabilizing autumn and winter planting acreage, stabilizing market prices to protect farmers' interests and promoting technology services for farmers, according to the meeting.

BUDAPEST, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Hungarian Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai has expressed optimism in having a better future in ties with China upon the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     Bajnai described China as a reliable international partner in a recent interview with Xinhua, saying that Hungary was one of the first to establish diplomatic ties with the fledgling country.     Having visited China in November 2008, he said he has been deeply impressed with the country's dynamic development.     "The high-standard professional exchange of views with Chinese negotiation partners in the central and local governments and withbusiness leaders have already yielded concrete results in the Hungarian-Chinese economic relations, to the benefit of both countries," said the prime minister.     He welcomed the forthcoming visit of Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, saying the visit will offer an opportunity for the two sides to talk about "further significant advances in bilateral economic cooperation."     The past decade has witnessed a 17-fold rise in trade between Hungary and China, he said, adding that there had also been extensive growth in their cultural, educational, scientific and tourism cooperation.     Noting that China is one of Hungary's most significant Asian trade partners and Hungary one of China's most prominent in central and eastern Europe, Bajnai said further improvement of the relations with China has been a priority of the Hungarian foreign policy.     "Mutual investment and technological cooperation are important not only because they are profitable for businesses of both countries, but also because in hard economic times they create jobs, " he said.     He noted that China has been doing a splendid job in facing up to the challenges of the world economic depression. Hungary also did everything in its power to alleviate its impact, he said.     Both countries should "take full advantage of their cooperation in continuing to combat the crisis," he said.     Referring to the 60 years China has gone through, Bajnai said China's development, especially in the past three decades, has set an example for the world.     "My personal opinion is that China's greatest achievement has been its huge economic advances, which made it possible to significantly raise the living standards of the 1.3 billion Chinese people," he said.

NEW YORK, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Oil prices plummeted to below 70 U.S. dollars a barrel on Monday as investors were rattled by the sharp decline in China's equities market.     Light, sweet crude for October delivery lost 2.78 dollars, or 3.8 percent, to settle at 69.96 dollars a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell to the intraday low of 69.13 dollars a barrel. Global stock markets dropped broadly after China's Shanghai Composite Index dived almost 7 percent, spurring concerns about the pace of world economic recovery.     Oil prices have found support from optimism that a potential turnaround in the economy could boost flagging fuel consumption, which sent the futures up to a fresh ten-month high of 75 dollars a barrel. However, oil failed to break the 75-dollar psychological barrier and fell back to around 70 dollars a barrel as investors were worried that the market might have gotten too far ahead of the economy.     In London, Brent Crude for October delivery tumbled 3.52 dollars, or 4.8 percent, to 69.27 dollars a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government supports UN's leading role in promoting international cooperation to curb climate change, Premier Wen Jiabao said here Friday.     Wen made the remarks while meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who arrived here Thursday evening for a four-day visit. Calling the United Nations a core player of the international system, Wen said the organization has played an important role in settling major international and regional issues as well as global challenges. He stressed it is of key importance to stick to the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" when responding to climate change, and to take into consideration the interests and voices of developing countries.     Ban also expressed hope for a fruitful Copenhagen summit on climate change in December with joint efforts from all parties concerned.
