Newsom has already signed a law requiring counties to mail ballots to voters ahead of the Nov. 3 election. County election officials are having trouble securing enough polling places because of the pandemic. California continues to have problems with missing data on virus infections throughout California. It's just the first part of .5 billion that cities and counties risk losing if they don't toe the line on coronavirus safeguards.Atwater's mayor says the governor is abandoning the small city even as he devotes more resources and federal money to combat a virus surge in the Central Valley. 615
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed a law giving tax breaks to more immigrants. In June, California expanded its earned income tax credit to apply to immigrants who have jobs and pay taxes but don't have a Social Security number. But the credit only applied to immigrants who had a child under 6. The law Newsom signed Friday eliminates that requirement, making the tax credit available to more people. It's one of several laws California has enacted in recent years to offer more government services to people living in the country illegally. Newsom said the law will help stimulate the economy. 634
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Google says Android phones will be used to sense earthquakes around the world and may one day be able to provide global warnings, with the first mass alert system unveiled Tuesday in California. The Android operating system maker says it's using California's network of seismometers to trigger phone alerts. “This announcement means that California’s world-class earthquake early warning system will be a standard function on every Android phone — giving millions precious seconds to drop, cover and hold on when the big one hits,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement.Android users who have enabled location services and are near a quake of magnitude 4.5 or greater will receive a full-screen earthquake warning, according to ABC News. Authorities say that could give people nearby precious seconds to seek safety. No app is needed. Google also announced that Android phones around the world will begin acting as mini-seismometers to sense tremors. Beginning next year, that could lead to early warning alerts for users near quakes around the world. 1085
