CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The man accused of shooting and killing an employee at a South Bay fast-food restaurant and injuring two others pleaded not guilty in court Tuesday. A judge at the arraignment ordered Albert Lee Blake be held on million bail, noting he poses extreme danger to the public. Blake was arrested in Memphis, Tennessee Friday. “ Investigators with the local task force began to hunt for the fugitive. He was pinpointed in a house on the 2300 block of Hubbard street today. He was taken into custody without incident,” the U.S. Marshals Service said in a news release Friday.Blake is charged with shooting and killing Maribel Merino-Ibanez, 28, and wounding two men on November 6 at the Church’s Chicken on Del Sol Boulevard. Today, Ibanez's mother spoke to news crews after Blake's arraignment, thanking police officers and investigators.Emma Merino said she felt anger when she saw Blake in person for the first time in court Tuesday."It's awful what he did to me," said Merino. "He took away my daughter, she was a perfect daughter.""My heart is broken, I have to live with it all my life until I die," she continued. "But, I know he's going to pay... and that's all I want."RELATED COVERAGE:Worker dead, two employees shot at Church’s Chicken in Otay Mesa WestTIMELINE: Events that led to Church's Chicken shootingWitness saves victim of Church's Chicken shooting in Otay MesaChurch's Chicken shooting suspect has lengthy criminal historyAccording to police, Blake was at the restaurant earlier in the day when he tried to use a counterfeit bill to buy food. CHULA VISTA (KGTV)-- It was back to school--virtually--for the Sweetwater Union High School District. They are the first school district in the county to start the year. Some parents said the one issue they ran into was technical problems. Gina Chavez, a mother of three and an elementary school teacher, said two of her three kids dealt with issues getting started. She said day one was "crazy."“My daughter started the day without an advisory class and no code for her science class,” Chavez said. Her other daughter couldn’t log onto her iPad, issued by the school district. “We had to scramble. I got my work computer, was able to log her on that way. [I] had to do a trouble ticket.”Two of her children have special needs and are on IEPs, individualized education programs. There still some question about how that will be handled in a remote environment.“I still haven’t heard anything as far as how they are going to specifically address his goals. I’m still waiting and if I don’t hear by the end of the week, I will be reaching out to figure that out,” Chavez said.A district spokesperson said roughly 9,400 devices were distributed last week. The majority of students were able to hold on to their devices from last year.Regarding technical problems, spokesperson Manny Rubio acknowledged the issues, but said the “issues are being resolve fairly quickly.”“It seems as though the great majority of students were logged in and had access to their classes,” Rubio wrote in an email to ABC 10News. “We do have our IT staff as well as school site staff available to answer questions and resolve issues.”Under the distance learning model, students are block schedules with three classes per day. There will be 30 to 45 minutes of virtual face time with the student’s teacher. The remaining time will be independent study, according to the plan released by the district.“I feel like I was torn in three different directions this morning trying to help every child get where they needed to be,” Chavez said. “If I had work today… I think I would have been in tears.”Chavez said she hopes the glitches get resolved by the end of the week. The Sweetwater Union High School District is facing many challenges, including a roughly million budget shortfall. An audit of the district conducted by the independent state agency Fiscal Crisis Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) showed there was enough evidence that fraud or misappropriation of funds may have occurred within the district. 2491

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A Chula Vista business specializing in hand-woven bags faced a logistics mess due to overtaxed delivery systems during the pandemic.Daisy Romero founded El Cholo's Bag back in 2008. It's a completely online business and in 2020 sales skyrocketed,"The e-commerce side just blew up," she said. The business is rooted in Mexican tradition, which is how she describes her bags, "very traditional Mexican bag, they’re made from recycled plastic. They’re the kind of bag our grandmothers used to use for the market."Many like the fact the bag is pandemic friendly."You can wash them, Lysol it, wipe it down with a Clorox wipe, it’s easy," she said. But, her small business hit a big shipping problem."At one point I just had dozens of lost packages, throughout the system and it didn’t matter if it was UPS or USPS, it didn’t matter. Everything was just so strained," says Romero. The shipping issue strained Romero's bottom line as well."It is a struggle, you know sometimes you’re in the negative because you had to refund three packages and you haven’t sold anything that day," she said solemnly. She learned from the challenges, insuring her business so the next time a package gets lost, she doesn't get burned. She's also working around the system, driving to San Diego customers."It’s easier to make sure your local customers get their product and it’s not going to be stuck in some distribution center even though it’s five miles away in Chula Vista," Romero said.As for her dreams, the pandemic put them on pause."My biggest goal for this year was to break into the European market and go to Paris and do all these things. 2020 was like, 'not today,'" she said. She hopes to bring her artisans' work to the world and share a bit of tradition. 1777

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) - Chula Vista police are searching for a possible arsonist after two brush fires burned part of Otay river bottom Friday afternoon. Fire crews responded around 2 in the afternoon to the area south of Main Street and east of Broadway. While crews were working to put out the fire, they received a call of a second fire in the same location. The second fire presented more difficulties because of its location. Batallion Chief David Albright tells 10News, "it was kind of down in the slough, in the river bottom, so we were able to bring in a helicopter and make some water drops". Multiple water drops were made and fire crews had both fires out within an hour. Chula Vista police are continuing their search for a possible arsonist. They believe there could be a connection to one of the homeless individuals living near the Otay River bottom. San Diego County sheriffs also sent up their helicopter to look for a suspect in the brush but were unsuccessful. 985

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Tuesday is transformation day at the Otay Ranch Town Center in Chula Vista. The open-air center converts to a bustling farmers market, playing host to dozens of vendors. 10News anchor Kimberly Hunt spent an afternoon with a welcoming group of local artisans, whose love of food, culture and community shines through. As you walk through the market, your senses are hit with amazing aromas and live music. On this day, the sound of live guitar followed visitors throughout. See complete coverage of Life in Chula VistaThe variety of food vendors is enough to send your taste buds into a frenzy. Kimberly sampled Kenyan cuisine, devouring melt in your mouth chicken. She also stopped by a sushi stand, making savory rice bowls with tempura shrimp. Next was South Bay Salsas, a beautiful blend of fresh, seasonal Mexican/American fusion. “Every week, it's a little different. Mangoes are fresh, sometimes a little more ripe. You take it like it is”, says South Bay Salsas owner Scott Strickland. Strickland and his wife have grown their booming Chula Vista business by adding to their seasonal selections. New to the farmers market this day was Frida’s street tacos. Owner Robert Ayala tried for 3 years to get a stand at the farmers market. Ayala says his first day was a great success. “Serving our people, our community, with our tacos," Ayala said. The love each of these vendors brings to their cooking comes through in every bite. It wouldn’t be a farmers market without farm to table produce. Remberto Cepera owns a produce stand, selling fresh fruit grown on his land. On this day, he has fresh picked prickly pears.“We picked these yesterday," Cepera said. The devotion to his craft is evident. He has seen these beautiful fruits through winter’s frost and summer’s heat. The taste is extraordinary.“It's delicious, and it's good for you," said Cepera. There is a lot more to this farmers market than the farm. There is something for people of all ages. You can take a trip back in time with bomber jackets or flashy disco jackets. A balloon artist delights children while their parents shop.“A lot of people come here for a good time with the family. Tons of great food, tons of great art” said Leo, a balloon artist who has lived in Chula Vista his whole life. He has performed at the farmers market for the past decade. The farmers market is open every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. 2426
