BEIJING, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- China kicked off a five-day military exercise in two provinces on Tuesday in which 12,000 military personnel and seven types of military aircraft are taking part.The military exercise, code-named "Vanguard-2010", was carried out simultaneously in seven cities across the provinces of Henan and Shandong at 8:21 a.m. Tuesday and featured simulated emergency evacuations and planning for combat.The drill, consisting of two phases from Tuesday to Saturday, will feature emergency evacuations, war planning, reconnaissance, early warning activities, ground-to-air attacks and evacuations of command posts during its first phase ending Thursday.Its second phase consists of testing Chinese air defense troops' ability in fighting air units in a "complicated electromagnetic environment."At 8:21 a.m. on Tuesday, air defense forces from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and paramilitary forces in the seven cities including Qingdao, Jinan, Zhengzhou and Kaifeng began evacuation plans and successfully moved to designated areas, screens at the drill's commanding headquarter showed.By about 10:10, an air defense brigade from the PLA Jinan Military Command led by its commander, Zhao Geng, had already traveled 100 km and begun to formulate war plans.

HAIKOU, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- China is bracing for a strong tropical storm named "Mindelle", which is expected to skim the southernmost island province of Hainan between Monday midnight and Tuesday morning.At 8 a.m. Monday, a tropical low pressure system across the South China Sea intensified into the fifth tropical storm of the year, after being upgraded to a strong tropical storm eight hours later.The storm, by the name of "Mindellu", which means dandelion in Korean, is expected to approach the Beibu Gulf off the southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region after skipping Hainan, the Hainan provincial meteorological bureau said.Local authorities in Hainan have halted railway, shipping services and tourism programs and called fishing boats to return to ports as they braced for the storm.Both cargo and passenger shipping services were halted at 5 p.m., according to the ban issued by the provincial maritime affairs bureau.Also, passenger and cargo train services through Qiongzhou strait between the mainland and Hainan were halted at 5 p.m.Meanwhile, more than 26,000 fishing boats have returned to their ports.Tourism activities, such as diving and water-motorbike-driving in Sanya, the famous tourist city in southern Hannan, have also been halted as residents prepared for the storm.The Hainan provincial government said they would spare no efforts in protecting the safety of fishermen and tourists, as well as strengthening the monitoring of reservoirs.

BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Urban residents who expect home prices to fall in first-tier Chinese cities in the second quarter outnumber those who anticipate further price hikes, according to a report by the China Economic Monitoring and Analysis Center released here Thursday.About 41 percent of those surveyed in the second quarter expected house prices to fall in popular first-tier cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen -- 18 percentage points higher than the proportion in the first quarter, according to the center which is under the National Bureau of Statistics.Meanwhile, only 36 percent of those surveyed in the second quarter anticipated house prices to continue to rise in those first-tier cities -- 24 basis points lower than the first quarter.In the second quarter, more people are expecting house prices to decline in cities at various levels, even as the proportions vary in different cities, according to the report.About 30 percent of consumers in provincial capital cities anticipated home prices to weaken in the second quarter, compared with 15 percent in the first quarter.In other small- and medium-sized cities, 28 percent of consumers surveyed foresaw house price falling in the future, up more than 11 basis points from the first quarter."The result show government measures to tighten the housing market since mid April have begun to have an effect on urban consumers' expectations," said Pan Jiancheng, deputy director of the China Economic Monitoring and Analysis Center.In spite of the rising proportions, the number of those who anticipated house price declines, however, still fell short of those who expected further price hikes in cities, except for consumers in the first-tier cities, according to the report.Housing prices in major Chinese cities rose 10.3 percent year on year in July, compared with 11.4 percent growth in June, according to NBS data released Tuesday.Property prices in 70 large and medium-sized cities grew 12.4 percent in May and 12.8 percent in April, the highest growth rate since July 2005 when the government started publishing the data.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 19 (Xinhua)-- More than 1,700 mudslide evacuees presently residing at schools in Zhouqu county of northwest China's Gansu Province are to be relocated as students will start the new semester soon, local authorities said Thursday.More than 400 households, altogether over 1,700 people, will be moved to Shachuan Village, in western of the mudslides-leveled county, said Yang Jianguo, head of the Civil Affairs Bureau of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture which administers Zhouqu.The people are now living in dormitories and classrooms of three local schools, namely No.1 High School, No.1 Junior High and No. 3 Junior High. With students coming back from their summer vacation, the schools could no longer be used as settlement areas.More than one thousand tents will be erected at the new settlement zone covering an area of 67 mu (4.5 hectares), with three tents for each family, said Yang."They probably will have to spend the winter there so winter tents will be used," said Yang.The devastating mudslides which hit on Aug. 8 have claimed 1,364 lives with 401 people still missing as of 4 p.m. Thursday.Work crews will level the ground, ensure water and electricity supply and build lavatories from Aug. 21 to 23. BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China's exports surged by 48.5 percent year on year in May, while the imports climbed 48.3 percent, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) announced Thursday.The growth rate for exports was 18.1 percentage points up from the figure for April, and the import growth rate dipped slightly from 49.7 percent reported in April.Exports totalled 131.76 billion U.S. dollars in May, said a statement on the GAS website, adding imports topped 112.23 billion U.S. dollars.Total foreign trade value rose 48.4 percent from a year earlier to 243.99 billion U.S. dollars in May.
