When snow falls in a flurry and the weather is cold outside, escaping the elements becomes a top priority. With COVID-19 causing some warming shelters to stop operations this winter, however, the impacts could literally mean the difference between life and death.“We’re going to see a lot of people die to be perfectly honest,” said Robin Wood-Mason with The Delores Project, a homeless shelter in Denver, Colorado, that focuses on women and transgender folks. He says during a normal winter, this shelter can provide a warming space for dozens of people each day. But with a static population and a lack of social distancing, local health guidelines have forced them to shut their doors for warming shelters this season.“It’s heartbreaking,” Wood-Mason said of the warming shelter not being able to open this winter. “Here in Denver, we’ve got thousands more people experiencing than there are shelter beds available.”Across the country, other warming shelters are also being impacted by COVID concerns.“We’re just starting to inch into those winter months when we know things are going to get colder, things are going to look and feel a little different into our regions,” said Andrea Carlson with the American Red Cross. She says the days of having people packed in to one large room to get warm are gone. Now, they’re putting people into multiple separate spaces and following new COVID safety protocols.“Distanced between each other, masks are required, you do have some health checks when you come into the warming center,” Carlson said.As winter weather rolls in, and limited capacity issues mean more people are staying outside, The Delores Project believes more people will be exposed to harsh weather and the virus.“It means that we’re really going to see people get sick,” Wood-Mason said. “It’s going to put a new burden on the hospital system and our first responders.” 1887

With hospitals overwhelmed in much of the United States, the number of coronavirus cases jumped to record levels on Wednesday. The total of confirmed COVID-19 cases reported on Wednesday was 144,000, according to Johns Hopkins University. There were also at least 1,900 coronavirus-related deaths reported in the US in the last 24 hours, according to Johns Hopkins, marking the deadliest day of the pandemic since May 6, when 2,300 Americans died of the virus.Wednesday's case increase was the highest single-day total since the pandemic began and broke a record that stood for one day. The previous record of 140,000 new cases was set on Tuesday. Wednesday marked the ninth consecutive day in which there were at least 100,000 new cases reported. The news comes as governors and public health experts throughout the country have pleaded with citizens to wear masks and follow social distancing recommendations. A number of states were looking to re-impose restrictions in hopes of keeping hospitals from filling up with COVID-19 patients.Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine threatened to close restaurants, bars and gyms in his state again if things don’t change. The state had more than 6,000 coronavirus cases on Tuesday, marking a one-day record.“I am very well aware of the burden this will place on employees and the owners, but these are places where it is difficult or impossible to maintain mask-wearing, which we know now is the chief way of slowing this virus,” he said.In neighboring Indiana, the state is limiting the size of social gatherings, depending on the county.“Unfortunately, too many of us have let our guards down,” Gov. Eric Holcomb said Wednesday.Across the country in Nevada, the state’s governor issued a similar warning."We don't have much time to act to avoid a dangerous hospital surge and keep our economy going and keep people at work," said Gov. Steve Sisolak. The COVID Tracking Project, a project led by The Atlantic, shows that current coronavirus-related hospitalizations hurdled the 60,000 mark in the US on Tuesday for the first time since the start of the pandemic. The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 has more than doubled in the last six weeks throughout the US.While state governors have been doing what they can to fight the virus, the White House has been silent on the virus since Election Day.The US is not alone in seeing a surge in cases. There has also been a significant surge of cases in much of Europe after going most of the summer and fall with a minimal number of cases. 2531

WESTFIELD, New Jersey — A New Jersey family says it was scared away from its home after a series of cryptic and threatening letters from someone known as "The Watcher."The family is now speaking out about its own real-life horror movie.Derek and Maria Broaddus were too spooked to ever move into their .3 million dream home in Westfield, New Jersey. They spoke with New York magazine in their first public interview after the scary ordeal that went on for years. The first letter arrived one night in June 2014. What once was considered a childhood hobby has becoming a way to earn extra income as an adult. The business of trading, buying and selling sports cards is booming.“Cards that used to be worth to are now selling well upwards of 0,” said Mike Fruitman, owner of Mike’s Stadium Sportscards in Aurora, Colorado. He says sports cards are more popular than ever and compares buying the card of an athlete to buying stock in a company.“We had a card that got pulled last night, it featured autographs from R.J. Barrett and Zion Williamson and we anticipate it’s going to be a ,000 card,” Fruitman said. While many businesses are suffering during the pandemic, Fruitman says this industry is seeing some of its biggest sales since the pandemic began, especially once they moved online.“We had a lot of people who were bored who were looking for entertainment,” he said. “We were going online every day during COVID and our viewership was impressive. We were getting views that we never seen before.”Though buying sports cards in person is still profitable, Fruitman says fewer cards are becoming available.“The amount of people who are opening up card stores or becoming breakers, it’s all just taffy,” he said. “And that taffy is just getting slowly apart. Everybody getting less and less it seems.”Card collectors believe the future of this industry depends on part of the popularity.“Right now, you’ve got videos of Mark Wahlberg opening up boxes with his kids,” Fruitman said. “Steve Aoki is a very large, popular DJ, has opened up his own sports card trading store in L.A.”For now, sports cards are combining entertainment and economics with no signs of slowing down.“It depends on how much you can invest,” one collector said. “But yeah, there’s plenty of money to be made.” 1791

WICKENBURG, AZ - A woman was found nearly a week after crashing her car near Wickenburg, Arizona earlier this month, officials say.According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a 53-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle along US-60 near milepost 117 on October 12. Her vehicle reportedly went through a fence, dropped 50 feet and landed in a mesquite tree, suspended over the ground. Six days later, an ADOT worker and rancher noticed the broken fence while trying to corral a cow, and saw the vehicle lodged in the tree. Emergency crews went to the scene and found the vehicle empty. Human tracks from the car led officials toward the Hassayampa riverbed where, 500 yards down, a severely dehydrated woman was found with serious injuries. She told officials that she stayed in the car for several days before climbing out and went toward the railroad tracks hoping someone would find her, however, she didn’t make it that far due to her injuries.      A medical helicopter was called and took her to the hospital for treatment.Officials did not go into further detail about the woman's injuries or the cause of the crash. “The diligence of the ADOT crew and teamwork of everyone involved is exemplary and to be commended. Due to their outstanding efforts, this woman’s life was saved," DPS Director Colonel Frank Milstead said in a media release.  1424
