SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Too many people are on the waiting list for a second chance at life.San Diego's organ donation group, Lifesharing, says the city and country are facing an organ shortage. In San Diego alone more than 2,000 people are on the waiting list. "There's never going to be enough organs but more people need to talk about organ donation so there can be more organs," said Lisa Stocks, Lifesharing Executive Director.On Friday, transplant recipients gathered to raise awareness about the issue and celebrate their new birthdays made possible because of organ donation.People can register to become donors on the Lifesharing website or at the DMV.You can also become a living donor by giving someone one of your kidneys. 742

Sorrento Valley's Hologic Diagnostic Solutions is making a big dent in the test kit shortage. Staying at home and away from others is Gov, Gavin Newsom's hope to curb the spread of COVID-19. But that does not curb fear. Many San Diegans still wish to get tested, but health officials say there just isn't enough. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Wednesday, San Diegans who live in their cars rallied in Ocean Beach to press the city to allow living in vehicles, as residents in various neighborhoods pressure the city to ban the policy once again.Earlier this year, San Diego City Council members repealed its vehicle habitation ordinance after a federal judge found it unconstitutional which halted all enforcement.Then in March, Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced an effort to bring a ban back. The ordinance would prohibit residents from sleeping in their cars from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. within 500 feet of a school or house.Residents say reversing the ban leads to broken glass, bottles of urine, drug paraphanelia, and excrement on sidewalks in some areas. But supporters of the policy said Wednesday they don't park in front of homes or litter along roads.The city says they’ve received hundreds and hundreds of complaints about what people living in cars have done to their neighborhoods. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While the CDC has issued guidance for the cruise ship industry to reopen during the pandemic, the Port of San Diego says it's too soon to tell when the industry would restart locally.Friday, the CDC urged a "phased approach" to reopening the industry that has been largely shuttered since April following a no-sail order due to the pandemic. The agency says cruise lines will need to test safety protocols via mock voyages with volunteers before they can host passengers. Still, the order was the first movement on cruise ships since the CDC issued its no-sail order in March to help stop the spread of the coronavirus outbreak. Adam Deaton, Port of San Diego cruise business representative, told ABC 10News that the port will have to coordinate with cruise companies on what their next steps will be."It is too soon to say how soon sailing could resume in San Diego. Our next steps will be to coordinate with Holland America and Carnival on their plans, as they are the first few cruises on our schedule. Currently, our first scheduled cruise is Dec. 19 with Holland America’s Koningsdam. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A judge ruled Friday that Alvin Quarles, known as the “Bolder Than Most Rapist," will continue to stay in a state hospital until at least December. A status hearing was held Friday morning to get an update on the location of where he will live. The search is still ongoing to find a location, and the judge has given the court a 90-day extension to do that. In the meantime, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office has issued an appeal to pump the brakes on Quarles’ release. The Deputy District Attorney, Jessica Coto, says they are attempting to make sure Quarles is not released into the public before he is ready. “The evidence showed that the release of Mr. Quarles was premature and that he still poses a danger to the community,” says Coto. There have been many evidentiary hearings during this process that have not been open to the public. Quarles' victims feel they should have a right to know what was said behind closed doors. The DA's office is hoping that will be reversed during the appeal process. “It makes me shaky for myself personally, and it makes me shaky for the young people of our community, who is his demographic, and who I think really will be at risk,” said survivor Mary Taylor. In the 1980s, Quarles sexually assaulted more than 10 women, often holding them at knifepoint, forcing their boyfriends or husbands to watch as be brutally attacked them. He was sentenced to 50 years behind bars but was moved to Colinga State Hospital years ago to get treatment for sexually violent predators. Quarles was initially set to be housed in Jacumba Hot Springs, but that idea was shut down. Another status hearing has been set for Dec. 6. 1694
