SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Countywide influenza cases hit a season high last week, and three more residents died due to flu complications, county health officials announced Wednesday. The county's Health and Human Services Agency confirmed a total of 616 flu cases last week, beating last week's season-high of 545 cases. The county has confirmed 6,094 flu cases so far this season, compared to 18,137 a year ago.The county's flu death toll now sits at 45 after two men, ages 44 and 33, and a 101-year-old woman died due to flu complications. The county confirmed that all three had additional medical issues, but did not disclose if they had been vaccinated. The county's flu death toll stood at 288 at this time last flu season.RELATED: Is it a cold or a flu? Here are 5 ways you can tell, according to the CDC"Given the high number of cases that continue to be reported, influenza continues to be widespread throughout the community," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "It is not too late to get a flu shot."County health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women, people older than 65 and people with chronic conditions. Recent flu seasons have extended as late into the year as May, according to county health officials.Flu shots are available at doctors' offices, retail pharmacies, community clinics and the county's public health centers. Residents can also call 211 or visit the county's immunization program website, sdiz.com, for a list of county locations administering free vaccines. 1710

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Military officials are preparing to transfer the remains of seven U.S. Marines -- including one from Montebello -- and a Navy sailor to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware over the next few days to be prepared for burial. The remains were recovered Friday after the Marines went missing near San Clemente Island when their amphibious vehicle sank during a training mission last month."Our hearts and thoughts of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit are with the families of our recovered Marines and Sailor," said Col. Christopher Bronzi, commanding officer of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. "We hope the successful recovery of our fallen warriors brings some measure of comfort."Marine and Navy pallbearers will place the remains aboard an aircraft bound for Dover AFB in a solemn transfer, officials said. From Dover AFB, their remains will be released to their families in accordance with their wishes.RELATED: Remains of missing Marines and Sailor recoveredThe transfer of remains will not be open to the public.A group of service members and supporters went on an 8-mile hike Saturday morning in Carlsbad to honor the Marines and sailor. The U.S. military announced Tuesday it had located the amphibious assault vehicle that sank last week off the coast of San Diego County, killing the nine young servicemen, and confirmed the presence of human remains where the vessel came to rest on the sea floor. The naval Undersea Rescue Command made the discovery near San Clemente Island on Monday using video systems remotely operated aboard the HOS Dominator, a merchant vessel whose crew specializes in undersea search and rescue. The amphibious troop-transport vehicle was en route to a waiting ship during a maritime training mission about 80 miles west of Encinitas when it foundered for unknown reasons about 5:45 p.m. July 30, according to Lt. Gen. Joseph Osterman, commanding general of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. The 26-ton vessel went down roughly 1,600 yards from a beach on the northwest side of the island in water nearly 400 feet deep.Seven members of the Camp Pendleton-based crew survived the accident. Medics took two of them to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where both were admitted in critical condition. One was later upgraded to stable condition. The other five rescued Marines received clean bills of health and returned to their units.Pronounced dead at the scene of the accident was Lance Cpl. Guillermo S. Perez of New Braunfels, Texas. Perez, 20, was a rifleman with Bravo Company, Battalion Landing Team 1/4, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The 15th MEU, I MEF and Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group searched in vain for nearly two days for more survivors or their bodies, finally concluding the operation Aug. 1 after 40 hours of scanning some 1,325 square miles of water by sea and air.The other lost service members have been identified as:-- Lance Cpl. Marco A. Barranco, 21, of Montebello, a rifleman with Bravo Company, BLT 1/4, 15th MEU;-- Cpl. Cesar A. Villanueva, 21, of Riverside, a rifleman with Bravo Company, BLT 1/4, 15th MEU.-- Pfc. Bryan J. Baltierra, 18, of Corona, a rifleman with Bravo Company, BLT 1/4, 15th MEU;-- Pfc. Evan A. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego molecular diagnostic company announced Thursday it has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to fund development of its coronavirus diagnostic test, which the company says would provide results in about 30 minutes.Mesa Biotech Inc. will receive both 1,330 in funding and "technical expertise" from the HHS's Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority -- or BARDA -- to complete developmental work needed to obtain Emergency Use Authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA's emergency authorizations fast-track unapproved medical products for use during a public health emergency.Mesa says its Accula SARS-CoV-2 test utilizes throat swabs to detect SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19."As the coronavirus situation escalates and the demand for testing far exceeds capacity, we are encouraged by the support of HHS in the development of our Accula SARS-CoV-2 Test," said Hong Cai, Mesa Biotech's co- founder and CEO."Our test, which was developed to enable rapid responses to global pandemics, will significantly compress the sample-to-result timeframe with a laboratory-quality test at the point-of-care," Cai said. "This accelerated response will enable health care providers to rapidly screen, isolate, treat or dismiss potential carriers of the virus."In the past week, three companies with local laboratories received emergency approval from the FDA to supply COVID-19 detection tests, including Hologic Inc. and Quidel Corp. in San Diego, and Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. in Carlsbad.Mesa Biotech's diagnostic test is one of four to receive funding from BARDA, according to the agency."Diagnostics are a critical need in the overall strategy to fight this newest global public health threat," BARDA Director Rick A. Bright said. "We need increased testing capacity in the U.S. to rapidly identify, isolate and treat those infected with COVID-19 in order to limit transmission of the virus, and we need those tests as close to the patients as possible."Currently, no FDA-approved diagnostics, vaccines or treatments for COVID-19 are available. 2168

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Wednesday publicly identified a Chula Vista city employee found slain in his home near Mount Helix.Chula Vista police personnel conducting a welfare check at the request of a co-worker found the body of 38-year-old Kevin Powell in his residence in the 4400 block of Carmen Drive in Casa De Oro shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday.Because the neighborhood is in an unincorporated area, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department was called in to take charge of the case, said sheriff's Lt. Thomas Seiver.Powell's death has been ruled a homicide, said Seiver, who declined to specify how the victim is believed to have died."The preliminary cause-of-death (finding) is being withheld for investigative reasons," Seiver said.Powell's work supervisor asked police to check on him after he missed several meetings, according to the sheriff's department. 878
