BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- In light of the recent school attacks, China has tightened security for the college entrance examination which begins on Monday."All the relevant departments and local governments are fully prepared to respond to emergencies during the exam," said Liu Junyi, vice-director of the exam center under the Ministry of Education, on Sunday.In Beijing, police, security guards and volunteers will work together to guard the exam venues.In Henan and Anhui provinces, emergency-responses have been prepared in case of disorder due to bad weather, serious cheating behavior, food poisoning, or traffic accidents.China's national college entrance examination will be held on Monday, with more than 9.57 million examinees competing for 6.57 million places at nationwide universities and colleges.Because of the recent slew of attacks against students, boarding school teachers in south China' s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region are required to walk students from their schools to the exam venues."The college entrance exam is a matter of great importance that demands joint efforts of relevant departments," Liu said.In Chongqing municipality, public security departments have inspected students' living areas around exam venues to ensure their safety.In Hubei province, relevant departments have completed a rehearsal using exam paper B in case that students are found cheating using exam paper A.In Jilin, an anti-cheating campaign has seized over 4,000 cheating device sets."We have organized a dozen expert teams, who are ready to handle nationwide emergencies and incidents," Liu said.In quake-hit Yushu of Qinghai Province, experts from the Ministry of Education have arrived to help hold the exam.A total of 9.57 million people have registered to sit for the exam this year. Hormats, who once served as a senior economics advisor to Dr. Henry Kissinger, has visited China many times.He hailed the U.S.-China relationship that has witnessed "remarkable development" since the two countries forged diplomatic ties.But that does not mean there are no differences or competition between the United States and China, he added.Still, when looking back, the differences the two countries have been resolved in a constructive way, he said.The two countries' leaders understand they need to get along, he said.Hormats has made the visit to China amid calls in the United States for China to let its currency, the yuan, appreciate in value against the dollar.He said the United States commends China for its efforts to undertake rebalancing in China, and "we think China had made great progress.""We do not regard the competition with China as a zero-sum game," Hormats said, adding that strong growth in China helps the United States.The U.S.-China relationship is extremely important, and the two countries have a great opportunity now to do things in their common interests, he said.At the upcoming Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, Chinese President Hu Jintao and U.S. President Barack Obama will meet while the second China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue will take place in May.Hormats also said the two countries need to enhance collaboration within the global architecture, and expand cooperation in areas such as clean energy, innovation and economic rebalancing.Hormats will also attend the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) in China's southernmost Hainan Province.

XIANGNING, Shanxi, March 31 (Xinhua) -- The water level dropped Tuesday in a flooded coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province, where 153 people were trapped, as rescue efforts entered the third day.But there was still no communication with the trapped although almost 1,000 rescuers have been racing the clock to pump out water and trying to reach them.By 6 p.m. Tuesday, the water level in the shaft had dropped by 15 cm, and a total of 15,000 cubic meters of water had been pumped out of the pit, the rescue headquarters said late Tuesday.Rescuers send drainage pipes down to the shaft at the site of the flooding accident of Wangjialing Coal Mine, sitting astride Xiangning County of Linfen City and Hejin City of Yuncheng City, north China's Shanxi Province, on March 30, 2010.Currently, six pumps are being used to pump up to 645 cubic meters of water per hour.Altogether 261 workers were in the pit of Wangjialing Coal Mine, which was under construction, when underground water gushed in at about 1:40 p.m. Sunday. Although 108 were lifted safely to the ground, 153 others were trapped in the shaft.The mine, which straddles Xiangning County, of Linfen City, and Hejin City, of Yuncheng City, covers about 180 square kilometers.The mining zone was estimated to have more than 2.3 billion tonnes of coal reserves, including 1.04 billion tonnes of proven reserves, according to the company's official website.The mine, affiliated with the state-owned Huajin Coking Coal Co. Ltd., is a major project approved by the provincial government. It is expected to produce 6 million tonnes of coal annually once in operation.
