(KGTV)- UC San Diego Health has had a goal to increase testing since the start of this pandemic, according to Dr. David Pride, the Associate Director of Microbiology. Now, UCSD Health has started using a new testing strategy; pool testing.“We’ve really been thinking about what is it that we can do to sort of extend testing in the San Diego region,” said Pride. “Pooling is absolutely a strategy, for example, that employers can use on their employees that universities can use, for example, on their students.”As the nation faces another COVID-19 testing supply shortage, Pride said this could be one solution to conserving the current supply.“Pool testing works by taking a group of individuals and placing all of their specimens together,” he said.Instead of using one test per person, samples from several people are collected and tested together. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends pool testing to be used only when the positive rate is low enough to justify pooling.“If that pool tests negative, then you can call each individual that was in that pool negative,” said Pride. If the pool tests positive, then each person is retested individually.“We test a lot of different patient populations, so we know what the prevalence of disease is in those patient populations, and we’ve chosen to use those with the lowest prevalence of disease for our pool testing,” Pride explained. He said they are currently using a five to one strategy, meaning five people per one test.“We’ve done probably somewhere around 500 to 600 so far. The majority of the batches have been negative, we’ve had less than 10 percent of the pools test positive,” Pride said, which is what his team expected.Pride said he heard positive feedback about pool testing from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).“Just a few weeks ago, we submitted our emergency use authorization to the FDA, and we think we’re probably getting fairly close to that getting approved,” he said.Soon, pride expects to start doing more pool testing, while also speeding up the process.“Right now, we’re really working on it in a very manual fashion,” he said. “That takes a lot of time to do, so we’re in the process of automating it by bringing in machinery to do that work that people are doing right now.” 2287

(KGTV) - Sentencing will continue next week for the man convicted of killing his former business partner along with the man’s wife and two young sons. A San Bernardino County jury recommended the death penalty in June 2019 for Charles “Chase” Merritt. The recommendation came after Merritt was found guilty in the deaths of Joseph McStay, his wife Summer, and their two sons, Gianni and Joey Jr. A sentence was expected to be delivered Friday. The hearing will now resume on Tuesday. The family was last seen at a Fallbrook home in February 2010. Investigators had few leads in the case, at one point believing the McStays had crossed the border into Mexico voluntarily. Merritt alerted authorities to the disappearance and filed a missing persons report. RELATED: Death penalty recommended in Fallbrook family's murders / McStay family murder trial: Business partner found guilty to killingsIn November 2013, a motorcyclist found a piece of skull off Interstate 15 in San Bernardino County. That led to the discovery of the family’s remains in a shallow grave less than 20 miles from Merritt’s home. One year later, Merritt was arrested. During his trial, which started in January 2019, prosecutors said Merritt had been forging checks linked to the business he shared with Joseph McStay. During Friday's sentencing, Merritt tried to fire his attorney, Rajan Maline, after returning from the court's lunch break. The defense had spent the morning giving several motions about new cell phone evidence. The prosecution had yet to have the chance to argue against the motions before Merritt moved to fire Maline mid-trial. The judge denied Merritt's request and allowed the defense to continue arguments for a new trial because of the new evidence and alleged misconduct by the prosecution. 1795

(KGTV) - The developer of the proposed Newland Sierra project is promising to prioritize 500 new homes to first responders, military, veterans and teachers. The commitment was enough to earn the controversial development the endorsement of San Diego Police Officers Association on Monday. It's the third major public safety organization to endorse the plan, which heads to voters countywide in March. CalFire Local 2881 and the San Diego County Deputy Sheriff's Association are already backing the project. "Projects like this that are building those middle-income houses, especially the ones that prioritize us, we're going to support them," said Jack Schaeffer, president of the Police Officers Association. Newland Sierra calls for 2,135 new homes in supply starved San Diego County. The County Board of Supervisors approved the project in September 2018, but a group of nearby residents and the Golden Door Spa nearby gathered enough signatures to send it to a countywide vote. RELATED: Voters could have final say over massive (and not so massive) backcountry developments"There could have been ways that things could have been worked out with Newland, but they basically wanted to build this entire new community the size of Del Mar without taking into account any of the surrounding residents," said Christopher Garrett, the attorney representing No on Newland Sierra. On Monday, Newland Sierra announced that it has made a commitment to first responders, military, veterans and teachers in writing. It recorded a covenant on its land deed that requires about 500 of its moderately priced homes to be prioritized for people in those roles. "It places a legally binding covenant on the property," said Devonna Almagro, a spokeswoman for the project. But Garrett called that an empty promise. He said it's only enforceable by the public and government if it's in the resolution that the county Board of Supervisors approved, which is heading to voters. RELATED: Developer pushes to rally support for vote on large North County housing development"There's nothing in the ballot question that says homes restricted to police officers," Garrett said. "There's nothing in the ballot language that the Board of Supervisors approved a couple weeks that says the homes have to be restricted to affordable housing, nothing like that."Newland Sierra also recorded covenants requiring 1,300 homes be priced for middle-income earners, and another 210 reserved for low-income households. Mark Dillon, an attorney representing Newland Sierra, said the covenants are, in fact, legally binding."It’s a recorded document and it is now a restriction on the property," he said. "We can't just amend over it."The covenant will last for 10 years, as long as the project moves forward. 2778
