Now the beloved North Park newsstand is closing down after 70 years."For a lot of people, they're here every day. It's their mainstay," said Ken Gabbara, owner of Paras News for the last 11 years. Health concerns are just one of the reasons he's letting the iconic shop go. You can't compete with something they give away for free for the most part," said Gabbara.At one time, they sold over 4,000 types of magazines, but with less published nowadays, that number dropped to 2,500.Longtime customers are sad to see the neighborhood establishment go. "It's going to be missed, it's really going to be missed," said Sharon Maynard, a customer of 35 years.Maynard fell in love with the literary and poetry magazines. "Now they just go online, but for me, there's nothing better than having it in your hand in print," said Maynard.Also sad to see the newsstand go is manager Kent Snyder, who's worked at Paras for 33 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two years after Lime scooters hit the pavement, the company has reached a milestone - surpassing 100 million rides globally. The company is thanking its riders who span across more than 120 cities, 30 countries, and five continents.A San Diego chef is one of those riders; in fact, he too reached a personal milestone. "My name is Justin Vaiciunas, and I am San Diego's #1 Lime rider!"A Lime representative called Vaiciunas last week to tell him about the accomplishment; Vaiciunas clocked in nearly 600 rides this year."I live right over off of Pacific Highway, and I scooter from there to work every day and back, and then also all around; even to Balboa Park, North Park, everywhere I can," said Vaiciunas. Vaiciunas likes how accessible and easy the scooters make it getting around downtown. He now uses them for 80 percent of his commutes. "I used to spend about in gas a week; now I maybe spend that a month."The company says with the growth they've increased education outreach as well as efforts to be good stewards in the cities they serve. As for Vaiciunes, his next goal is being the country's #1 Lime rider.Last month Lime's future in San Diego was called into question when the City claimed the company violated geo-fencing rules. The city then began the process to revoke Lime's permit.But a Lime spokesperson says the company looks forward to an upcoming hearing to make its case. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --A deported Army veteran who was pardoned by Governor Jerry Brown last year will now be allowed to become a U.S. citizen.Hector Barajas was honorably discharged but then deported to Mexico in 2004 after serving prison time for a shooting.  He had been waiting for news about his application for citizenship and learned Thursday that it had been approved. His swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for April 13 in San Diego. Barajas founded the Deported Veterans Support house in Tijuana and has become an advocate for the roughly 350 other men and women in the same situation. "We don't condone criminal activity, I'm not proud of what happened but I am proud of my service, and I take responsibility for what happened. I went to prison, paid my debt to society and I don't think we should be deported, " Barajas told 10News via Skype Friday morning. Although he's looking forward to starting a new chapter, he says he is very much committed to carrying on the mission he started to help bring other deported vets home.  1072

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — TwitchCon has announced it will cancel this year's convention in San Diego originally scheduled in September.The convention — which brings together popular video streamers and the community for panels, parties, and more — was set to arrive in San Diego from Sept. 25-27 before organizers called off the event."Due to restrictions on large gatherings and ongoing concerns for the health and safety of our community, the Twitch team and the local San Diego community, we have decided to cancel TwitchCon San Diego this fall," organizers stated online. The convention is now exploring ways to potentially hold the event virtually."While we can’t gather in person, we’re exploring ways that we could join forces in an alternate dimension later this year. We’ll keep you posted," organizers wrote.Those who have already booked a hotel room through Twitch’s hotel block will not be charged. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With a string of recent fires in San Diego County and statewide, it’s no secret that so-called fire season, which California fire agencies say is now year round, is getting worse.So far this year, Cal Fire has battled nearly 3,800 wildfires that have so far scorched more than 292,000 acres.That figure shows a sharp increase from previous years and is far above average for this time of year.According to Cal Fire, the last five years have, on average, seen just over 118,800 acres burned statewide by this time."We are seeing more destructive, larger fires burning at rates that we have historically never seen," said Jonathan Cox, Cal Fire regional Battalion Chief.The increasing danger even has agencies like the US Department of Agriculture warning of the risks. As far as major fire incidents, so far this year there have been well over 100.
