SHANGHAI, April 21 (Xinhua) -- China Eastern Airlines resumed some flights to Europe Wednesday, a week after ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland halted air travel.China Eastern resumed services between Shanghai and some European cities including Moscow, Frankfurt and Paris.The airline had canceled 17 flights bound for London, Moscow, Frankfurt and Paris from April 15 to 20, affecting about 8,000 passengers.The carrier said it used bigger Airbus A346 and A343 models to transport as many stranded passengers as possible.German airline Lufthansa resumed flights from Shanghai to Frankfurt late Tuesday. Other European carriers, including Air France, Virgin Atlantic, KLM and Aeroflot, resumed services between Shanghai and Europe Wednesday. Finnair would resume services Thursday, the Shanghai Airport Authority said.Europe's air traffic slowly began to return to normal Tuesday with almost half of all scheduled flights taking to the skies, but officials warned it could take weeks to clear the backlog of millions of passengers stranded since the volcano erupted April 14.

BEIJING, May 13 -- The proportion of China's GDP that goes toward wages has been shrinking for 22 consecutive years, a senior trade union official said on Wednesday.Zhang Jianguo, chief of the collective contracts department with the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU), also warned that low pay, long working hours and poor working conditions for millions of workers are triggering conflicts and mass incidents, which pose a grave challenge to social stability.The proportion of the country's GDP that makes up wages and salaries peaked at 56.5 percent in 1983 and dropped to 36.7 percent in 2005, Zhang said."The proportion has not changed too much since then. In contrast, the proportion of returns on capital in GDP had risen by 20 percent during the period from 1978 to 2005," Zhang said in an interview posted on the ACFTU's website.The annual average wages of workers in urban areas had increased from 12,422 yuan (,819) in 2002 to 29,229 yuan in 2008, statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics showed.However, the gap between the rich and poor has been widening in the country and is also growing between urban and rural areas, different provinces and cities, as well as in different industries, he said.About one-quarter of respondents in the latest ACFTU survey said their incomes have not increased in the past five years, while 75.2 percent of them said that current income distribution is not fair. BEIJING, April 3 (Xinhua) -- China's Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) of the non-manufacturing sector rose to 58.4 percent in March, a rebound of12 percentage points from February, when the index fell below the boom-bust line of 50 percent for the first time since a year earlier, an industrial association said Saturday.The PMI, designed to provide a real-time snapshot of business conditions, includes a package of indices including new orders, inventory levels, production and others that measure economic performance. A reading of above 50 percent suggests expansion, while one below 50 percent indicates contraction.The rise of the index indicated robust market activities in service sectors, which combined with an optimistic outlook that would encourage private investment and promote healthy and coordinated development of national economy, said the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP) vice president Cai Jin.According to the CFLP survey, the new order sub-index for China's non-manufacturing sector climbed to 54.6 percent last month, up 8.4 percentage points than February. The outlook sub-index was 70.4 percent, up 2.4 percentage points.The CFLP survey covers 20 non-manufacturing industries, including logistics, wholesale, hospitality, supermarkets and construction.The PMI for manufacturing sectors rose to 55.1 percent in March, the 13th straight month that the index was above 50 percent.
