JOHANNESBURG, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Strengthening friendly relations and cooperation with Africa is an important foundation of China's foreign policy, and remarkable development has been achieved in China-Africa ties in the past year, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said here Saturday.     Yang, who was wrapping up a visit to Uganda, Rwanda, Malawi and South Africa, said China and Africa maintained high-level exchanges, and deepened their strategic mutual trust in 2008.     Last year, many African leaders paid official visits to China, or traveled to China to attend the Beijing Olympics and the Beijing Paralympics, he told Xinhua.     African countries continued to offer their valuable support for China on issues concerning China's core interests, he added.     Africa and China are facing new opportunities for developing their ties this year, Yang said.     Chinese leaders will continue to make the development of China-Africa ties a top priority in China's external relations, he said.     In recent years, top Chinese leaders have paid visits to Africa every year, he said, adding that more such trips are likely to be scheduled for this year.     Moreover, the fourth ministerial meeting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) is scheduled to take place in Egypt in the fourth quarter of this year, with the aim of making a comprehensive assessment of the implementation of the consensus reached at the Beijing Summit of FOCAC in 2006.     In 2009, China, on the principles of sincerity and friendship, equality, mutual benefit and common development, will continue to strive to promote unity and cooperation with Africa, with emphasis on seeking ways to deepen pragmatic cooperation between the two sides, the minister said.     China will expand cooperation with African countries in infrastructure building, agriculture, telecommunications and human resources development, he said.     Yang said China attaches great importance to Africa's important role in such issues as Darfur, Zimbabwe, Somali pirates and UN Security Council reforms.     China will continue to keep close communication and coordination with Africa, strive to promote mutual understanding and mutual support, push for the peaceful settlement of relevant issues, and safeguard the common interests of developing countries, he added.

GENEVA, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The World Economic Forum (WEF) is "very proud" that it has managed to maintain "very positive" ties with China, a senior WEF official has said.     "We all know that China is an important factor in the future evolution and development of worldwide economy. So we are all very interested in what China will be doing," said Andre Schneider, managing director and chief operating officer of the Geneva-based organization.     In a recent interview with Xinhua before next week's opening of the 2009 WEF annual meeting, also known as the Davos Forum, in the Swiss Alpine skiing resort Davos.     More than 40 heads of state or government, including Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, and some 1,400 business leaders, have confirmed their participation at the five-day meeting scheduled to deal with the ongoing financial crisis and other global challenges.     Premier Wen's participation will certainly be "a unique opportunity" for the world to better understand what are the plans of the Chinese leadership to deal with the crisis, Schneider said.     Schneider noted the first two WEF annual meetings of the new champions, dubbed "Summer Davos Forum," were both held in China, in Dalian in 2007 and Tianjin a year later.     The success of the "Summer Davos Forum," a gathering of new multinational companies from China and across the world to explore the mechanisms of continued and sustainable growth, indicated the strong collaboration between the two sides, he said.     The WEF's choice of China as the host of the "Summer Davos Forum" was "an absolutely right one," he said.     Schneider noted that cooperation between the WEF and China started in 1979, when China first sent a delegation to the Davos Forum.     China and its economic growth has been a topic of interest for participants at the Davos Forum in recent years.     In June 2006, the organization opened a representative office in Beijing, which aims to deal with all interactions with China. BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese industry faced a grim situation, as the global financial crisis would have a deep impact on the industrial and information technology sectors, a senior official warned on Wednesday.     Zhu Hongren, an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said the country needed to increase investment in key areas and weak points of the industrial economy. The government should maintain a reasonable investment scale and step up technical innovation.     He said the imbalance between weakening demand and expanding capacity would become more problematic as the crisis spread. Labor-intensive and export-oriented businesses would be hurt as prices of energy and raw materials would continue fluctuating.     Among others, the electricity, textile and non-ferrous metal industries had already sustained heavy losses, with 18.3 percent of large industrial companies losing money during the first eight months of the year.     Industrial output growth fell to 11.4 percent in September, the lowest since April 2002. Power generation and oil production grew a mere 3.4 percent and 3.7 percent, respectively, while steel output fell 9.1 percent year-on-year.     In the first three quarters, the value of industrial exports rose 15.7 percent, which was 6.1 percentage points less than a year earlier.

BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Canvassers for China's economic census must ensure the validity and credibility of the results to give decision makers better insight into the economy, Vice Premier Li Keqiang said on Sunday.     The census is vital as it provides a frame of reference for the government to maintain stable, rapid economic growth as the financial crisis deepens, Li said during visits to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and a census data collection site here.     "The global financial crisis has not bottomed out but has further hit the world economy, and its adverse impact on China is gradually unfolding," said Li.     He urged census-takers to strive for quality and timeliness in their data.
