JINGGANGSHAN, Jiangxi, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has called on the country's police and other law enforcement organs to improve their capabilities to better serve the people and rely on the people to safeguard social harmony and stability. Zhou Yongkang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remark at a meeting attended by police chiefs during his visit to Jinggangshan, where late Chairman Mao Zedong and other revolutionists established the CPC's first rural revolutionary base in 1927, in east China's Jiangxi Province.     Law enforcement departments and police should handle public's complaints with earnest attitude, improve their credibility in law enforcement and rely on the masses of people to safeguard social harmony and stability, said Zhou, who also heads the CPC Central Political and Legislative Affairs Committee.     He also called on the police officials to be innovative in their work and to strengthen the building of grassroots police organs.     Zhou visited the Jinggangshan martyrs' memorial park to pay respect to more than 48,000 revolutionary martyrs buried there, late Chairman Mao's former residence and other revolutionary sites on Tuesday.     Meng Jianzhu, Minister of Public Security who also attended the meeting, asked police departments at all levels to explore new methods for safeguarding national security and social stability.

MACAO, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Saturday that "one country, two systems" had been successfully implemented in both Hong Kong and Macao since their return to the motherland.     "The two special administrative regions have accumulated rich experience in the regard, and can learn from each other and make progress together," said the president when meeting with Donald Tsang, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and principal officials of the Hong Kong SAR government.     Hu and Tsang arrived here Saturday to attend the celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland and the inauguration of the third-term government of the Macao SAR. BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan met here Friday with his Uzbekistan counterpart Elyar Ganiev, pledging to promote the healthy and sustainable development of economic and trade ties.     Wang conveyed congratulation on the success of the eighth session of the China-Uzbekistan Economic and Trade Cooperation Committee.     He said since the two countries forged diplomatic ties, high-level exchanges were frequent and the cooperation in such areas as economic and trade, energy and security were ever expanding. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States issued a joint statement in Beijing Tuesday, vowing to deepen counter-terrorism consultation and cooperation between the two countries on an equal and mutually beneficial basis.     The two sides promised they would boost joint efforts to combat transnational crime and criminal organizations as well as money laundering and the financing of terrorism, including counterfeiting and recovery of illicit funds.     Issued after the meeting between Chinese President Hu Jintao and visiting U.S. President Barack Obama, the statement formulated that the two countries would strengthen cooperation on criminal investigations and deepen collaboration in combating embezzlement.     Other areas, such as counter-narcotics, control of pre-cursor chemicals and combating unlawful migration, smuggling and human trafficking, are also targeted for more cooperation in the future.     The two countries agreed to exchange evidence and intelligence on law enforcement issues in a timely and reciprocal manner, and undertake joint investigations as well as provide investigative assistance on cases of mutual interest, according to the statement.     Obama is in Beijing for a four-day state visit to China that started in Shanghai on Sunday night.

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Sunday visited Canterbury University to open the second Confucius Institute in New Zealand.     Li said during the opening ceremony that cultural and educational cooperation are important parts of relations between China and New Zealand.     China has become the largest source of overseas students and the fastest growing source of international tourists to New Zealand, while people in New Zealand are taking a strong interest in studying the Chinese language and getting acquainted with Chinese culture, he said.     The new Confucius Institute, jointly founded by Canterbury University and China's Huazhong Science and Technology University, represents another achievement of the exchanges and cooperation between the two nations, Li said.     He said he hoped the institute would become a link between the two countries in cultural and educational exchanges. He said Christchurch would continue to play a positive role in strengthening the two nations' bilateral friendship and cooperation.     Li arrived in Christchurch after an official visit to Australia. He will travel to Papua New Guinea after his visit to New Zealand.
