SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego veterans from WWII and the Korean War are getting ready for a special trip. This weekend they'll board an Honor Flight to Washington D.C.10News is getting exclusive access to the trip and was at Honor Flight San Diego's last planning meeting before the special weekend gets off the ground. David Smith, Founder of Honor Flight San Diego, says it's incredibly important to thank our veterans while there's still time. The oldest veteran on this weekend's flight will be 99-years-old. "I've actually had veterans come up to me and say, 'ya know, in all these years no one has ever said thank you to me - this means so much'," said Smith.The group relies on fundraising to make the honor flight a reality - it costs 0,000 for the entire weekend.Our coverage of the Honor Flight continues Friday morning when Reporter Amanda Brandeis boards the plane with the veterans and will continue through Sunday when they all return to San Diego. Honor Flight San Diego welcomes the community to join the Sunday's homecoming at the San Diego International Airport. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Steele Canyon High School is one of two evacuation sites run by the American Red Cross for people affected by the Valley Fire, but they're not housing people like they normally would. Instead, they're acting as a resource facility for families like the Roberts'."Mine was one of the only houses in the neighborhood that went up," Alana Roberts said. Her weekend was turned upside down when she got word of the Valley Fire, which went from 100 to more than 10,000 acres in less than 48 hours, claimed her home. "I was in Oceanside and we raced to get in and as soon as we were in our truck, cops said 'you need to go now'", Roberts recalled.She was able to gather just a few belongings. "It was me and my husband who went in and grabbed what we could and let animals free. I had chickens and I couldn’t get them all."And now, she's one of the dozens of people seeking relief and a place to sleep at one of American Red Cross' evacuation sites."Someone gave me dog food, food for the kids, and we have the restrooms so we can kind of wash up." These sites typically provide shelter for families seeking relief, this time around, they couldn't."Outdoor sheltering is basically what we’re doing, people are in the lots in their cars and are acquiring hotel vouchers to put people in lodging," said Earl Potts with the American Red Cross. So far, 60 people have received hotel vouchers but last night they ran out, forcing people like Roberts to hunker down in their cars, trailers, and RVs. "We figure the family will stay together, and hunker down together."The Red Cross said as the holiday weekend comes to an end, they're hoping to get at least 200 more rooms available. "We’re able to provide meals at certain times of day and a place to park and sleep which makes it less but more of a priority situation."Alana said she's just thankful her family is safe and is going to return to what's left of her home once they're given the go-ahead."I don’t know if its truly set in. This morning my husband made me coffee and I thought about my brand new coffee maker I got for Christmas. I get camping coffee to drink now, I don't think it's really set in." 2179

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday, Dec. 8 will be the tenth year since a tragedy in the heart of University City.Four people died in 2008 when an FA-18 military jet crashed into homes in the San Diego community west of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.Rebecca Cosford was in her home and heard two loud noises. The first was the pilot blowing out the plane’s canopy and ejecting. The second sound was the crash.“One was popping, then a massive explosion that shook the whole house,” Cosford remembers.Cosford and her husband ran outside to see a “large column of smoke”.Teresa Rizzo not only heard it: she felt it. Someone yelled at her to stay back and told her a plane had crashed."I just thought, 'That was an airplane?’ That was an actual airplane that fell out of the sky and exploded around the corner from my house?"Marine pilot Dan Neubauer’s parachute landed a block west of the crash site after he ejected. He had been trying to reach MCAS Miramar on one engine, but his second engine failed. The FA-18 dropped like a stone.The four lives lost on the ground were Dong Yoon’s family."I believe my wife and two babies and my mother-in-law are in heaven with God," Yoon said after the crash.Neighbors had tried to help when disaster struck. Alain Blanc had a cell phone in one hand, 911 on the line. His other hand was holding a hose as firefighters arrived."There are moments we don't have time to be scared, you react! I heard this incredible bang, the earth shook, and I was outside. How I got there, don't ask me," said Blanc.Today, two new homes stand where the other two were destroyed.
