SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County public health officials said Friday that the region is dangerously close to being placed in the state's most restrictive reopening tier.The county's coronavirus case rate over the last 48 hours was alarming, according to Supervisor Nathan Fletcher."We've been living for most of the last month on the precipice of tiers," Fletcher said. "We now are concerned about the trends and we're concerned about the likelihood that we can tip back into purple."Fletcher says over the last six days, San Diego County's daily unadjusted case rates continue to increase.County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said since the start of this week, the county has seen its unadjusted case rate increase from 7.2 cases per 100,000 residents (7-day daily average from the previous week) on Sunday to 7.8 on Friday. The county's adjusted case rate has increased from 6.8 to 7.0 during the same time span.The last week reported for the county, San Diego reported an unadjusted case rate of 7.2 and an adjusted case rate of 6.8.Fletcher says the unadjusted case rate more closely represents the actual public spread of the coronavirus."The overwhelming majority of San Diegans are doing everything right. But we just have to go that extra mile in order to protect our status in our tier," Fletcher said.According to the state's reopening tier system, counties with a case rate of more than 7.0 and/or testing positivity percentage of 8% or greater for two consecutive weeks are placed in the purple tier, the state's most restrictive.Next Tuesday, Oct. 20, the state will report metrics for Oct. 4-10. Then on Oct. 27, the state will report results from Oct. 11-17.Officials say that's why they're sounding the alarm now, to encourage residents to double down on efforts around slowing the spread. The studio is located in the backyard of a home on Oregon Street in North Park, one of San Diego's most walkable neighborhoods. "I was amazed it was going for that much money," said Joe Moreno, who lives nearby. "Does it have plumbing? I mean, does it have facilities?"The answer is yes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County reported 409 new coronavirus cases Thursday and a single-day record of 17 new deaths from the virus.Thursday's new cases had a 4% positive rate out of 10,434 reported tests, according to the county, bringing the region's total to 21,855 cases. The county's new deaths brought the county's death toll to 465. Eleven men and six women died between July 2 and July 15, and their ages ranged from 51 to 90 years of age. All but one had underlying conditions.The county also reported one new community outbreak traced to a gym, bringing the region's total to 14 community outbreaks in one week — double the region's trigger.Of the region's total COVID-19 cases, the county says 2,127 or 9.7% have needed hospitalization, and 558 or 2.6% of all cases and 26.2% of hospitalized cases were admitted to an intensive care unit.The county remained above the state’s threshold of no more than 100 cases per every 100,000 residents at 153.2 cases. 978

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego City Council was recently warned about the damage an earthquake can cause to the region, specifically on the county's water system."Strengthen their water system, make that long-term investment," seismologist Lucy Jones said of the city's aging water infrastructure. A water main break occurred in the same area in January 2017 as well.Water main breaks last August in Mission Hills, Point Loma, the Midway District, and Spring Valley also left residents and businesses without water. As of August, there had been at least 29 water main breaks around the county in 2018.Since 2013, San Diego has spent about 8 million repairing and replacing 116 miles of water transmission lines and distribution pipes, according to city documents.
