NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Nashville District Attorney's Office will no longer prosecute those who have been charged for possessing less than half an ounce of marijuana."Marijuana charges do little to promote public health, and even less to promote public safety," District Attorney Glenn Funk said Wednesday in an announcement on the policy change. "Demographic statistics indicate that these charges impact minorities in a disproportionate manner. The resources that would have been used to prosecute those charges will be allocated to supporting victims and prosecuting violent crime.Nashville Mayor John Cooper said in a statement that he supports the change in policy."I support the DA's decision to stop prosecuting minor marijuana offenses in Davidson County. We need to continue working to ensure that people have access to drug treatment and that we are doing everything we can to keep nonviolent young people out of the criminal justice system," Cooper said.Last fall, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation sent a memo to law enforcement across the state that said testing in marijuana cases would "only be performed on felony amounts of plant material and at the District Attorney's request if needed for trial."While the memo did not decriminalize marijuana, defense attorneys said they would be less likely to pursue prosecution for those caught with small amounts of marijuana.The Nashville People's Budget Coalition — a coalition of civil rights groups in the ciry — reacted to Wednesday's policy update, saying Funk's decision could be a beginning of meaningful change, but they want to see more."While the district attorney is attempting to show good effort, we also want to go further," Erica Perry said. "Can you decriminalize and stop prosecuting sex workers? Can you stop prosecuting any amount of drugs? That is important."Funk's decision prompted State Rep. John Stevens, R-Huntingdon, to call for the DA's resignation."A blanket policy to not enforce the law is dereliction of duty and a subversive act akin to treason," Stevens said in a statement, in part. "The determination that marijuana possession is a 'minor; offense is a policy judgment out of the power and authority of the elected District Attorney. MOUNTAIN VIEW (CNS) - A 24-year-old man is today recovering after being shot in Mountain View.The victim was at a party in the 200 block of Southlook Avenue when a car, driven by a female suspect with a male suspect in the passenger seat, pulled up out front just before 9:40 p.m. Saturday.``The male suspect fired one round at the victim and struck him in the lower abdomen,'' said officer Robert Heims of the San Diego PoliceDepartment. ``The victim's mother drove the victim away from the scene and then called the police.''He was taken to a local hospital with non-critical injuries. More than 7,000 people who work at Disney World are worried about the park reopening.They've signed an online petition saying "this virus is not gone, unfortunately, it's only become worse in this state."Coronavirus cases are surging in Florida as the park preps for a phased reopening July 11.Disney is putting several measures in place to reopen safely, but staffers who signed the petition are hoping they'll reconsider, saying it's not fair to ask the people who work there to risk their lives.About 10% of Disney's workforce have signed this particular petition, and there's a similar petition by Disneyland workers in California which has nearly 50,000 signatures.Disney plans to reopen all 12 of its theme parks around the world by mid-July. 756

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) – A car crashed into a power pole in National City late Monday evening, killing a teen driver and leaving his female passenger trapped in the wreckage.The crash was reported at around 11 p.m. in the 2800 block of E 16th Street, according to National City police.Police believe the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his Cadillac sedan and veered into a pole.The driver died at the scene, and it took responding emergency crews over an hour to pull the unconscious passenger from the wreckage. She was transported to the hospital with severe head trauma and other life-threatening injuries.The driver and passenger are believed to be in their late teens.Several people who said they were family members of the victims arrived at the scene to talk to police.No other injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved. 895
