The oldest American survivor of the Japanese air attack on Pearl Harbor has died.  Ray Chavez was 106.Gary Bobileff of the Spirit of Freedom Foundation told 10News, "He was a humble man and he was truly a patriot."Seaman first class Ray Chavez was assigned to the Navy minesweeper U.S.S. Condor; it was on continuous duty for the next nine days in the waters around Pearl Harbor.  Bobileff described his focus as two-fold."Number one; love of country; that is of paramount important. The pandemic is coinciding with flu season, which is a potentially dangerous scenario doctors and nurses have given much thought to as the winter months approach.“How much is [the flu] going to play into things, and is it just going to make everything worse?” said Dr. Michelle Barron. “Is it going to comingle with COVID, and actually make people double sick or doubly ill?”Dr. Barron is the senior medical director of infection prevention and control at one of Colorado’s largest hospitals. She says staff has come up with contingency plans to deal with an influx of patients who might be battling serious flu symptoms.“We’ve been really encouraging our patients to get their flu shots and make sure they have that on their list,” she said. “We understand that there are some years that you’re debating whether or not it’s worth it, and we’re like this is the year you need to get it.”The CDC estimates around 196 million flu shots are available this year, a 13 percent increase from last year’s record-setting dosage of 175 million. It is an important number as last year 400,000 people were hospitalized for the flu, a potential burden hospitals have prepared for as bed space is now at a premium.“We’ve already surpassed the numbers of the first surge, so now, we’re like what’s next,” said Maddie Smith, a nurse at UCHealth in Colorado.Smith works in the hospital’s COVID ICU. She says while her unit has not reached a tipping point, it is expecting more flu patients to come in. Her unit has made plans to allocate more bed space to the seriously ill, regardless of cause, and treat them with whatever drugs are necessary. The good news, she says, is the flu has been treated for years, so doctors have a good plan of attack, and the measures we have taken to reduce the spread of COVID-19 are having a positive effect on the spread of the flu.“We usually are able to use the southern hemisphere as a good way to figure out what our flu season is going to look like,” said Dr. Barron. “They actually had a pretty mild flu season but COVID hit at the exact same time.”Dr. Barron says 3 to 5 percent of COVID-19 patients have had co-infection with another virus, showing complications are possible as flu season hits its stride, but not guaranteed.“I don’t think it’s anything that we can’t manage that we already haven’t thought about,” said Dr. Barron. 2367

The Mountain West Conference became the second conference from college football’s top division to postpone the 2020 football season citing coronavirus concerns on Monday.As part of its announcement, the Mountain West also announced that all fall sports will be postponed.Curt Apsey, the director of athletics at perennial Mountain West power Boise State, supported the decision. "Despite everything that has been thrown in their way over the last several months, our student-athletes, coaches and staff had been preparing for a 2020 season," Apsey said. "They were ready for every possible uncertainty, but in the end, the physical and mental well-being of student-athletes across the conference necessitated today’s announcement."On Saturday, the Mid-American Conference became the first NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision league to postpone the 2020 season. The two conferences are among 10 that comprise the FBS.Meanwhile, leaders from what is known as the Power 5, which are the Big 12, Big 10, Pac-12, SEC and ACC, have been discussing the upcoming season. The pandemic has resulted in a major increase in donated items, so the selection at stores like Goodwill is better than ever before.Families that are trying to make ends meet are benefiting a lot from this surge in donations."It’s not just a little bit. It’s carloads of donations," said Goodwill store manager Sarah Guthrie. "It’s just been crazy. Donation after donation. The first weekend I was here, we did over 1,000 donations between Saturday and Sunday. It's about a car for every 12 seconds."Guthrie has been store manager at the Castle Rock, Colorado, Goodwill location for about a month and a half. She's seen the same thing just about every day since."Right now, our donation center starts at 10 a.m., but starting around 9:15 or so, we start getting cars in our line and a lot of times it’ll wrap all the way around the building and into the street," said Guthrie.They see car after car of people dropping off bags of things they no longer need."Spring cleaning has taken on a whole new meaning this year," said Goodwill Industries International CEO Steve Preston.He says this isn’t just unique to this one store. Donations are up across the country where stores are open, which means now is the time to go shopping for a bargain."That is the logical connection. So, when we get a lot of great donations coming in, it is a super time to hit the store because our category is called “Treasure Hunting”, category in retail, and there are just a ton of treasures in there because so many people have been bringing in those donations," said Preston.Some stores are seeing an increase of up to 50% in donations, and they’re having a hard time storing it in their stores."Many of our local stores are renting additional warehouse space. They’re finding trucks to be able to hold those donations," said Preston.Which is the case back at Guthrie’s store."We store what we can here in the store. We process what we can here in the store.
