FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) — FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- A worldwide pandemic is a very serious thing but coping with it is often done with humor and laughter. Just ask a family in Fallbrook that’s created a new card game they call, "It's Contagious," featuring a not-so-serious side of dealing with the virus while allowing players to work through their anxiety."Folks will find that the artwork on the cards is really relatable," said mom, Lola Pickett. "And also just like a fun take on this very challenging situation that we’re all in."For Lola, her husband, Tigre, and their two children, the pandemic came very close to home in March when the kids' Grandfather, Rich Pickett, tested positive for COVID-19."His case ended up becoming quite severe, putting him into the ICU," Lola said.Lola says while her father-in-law was in the hospital and the family was quarantined. They coped while at home by spending time together and playing games together. But the stress of the pandemic and its very personal impact was never far off."We noticed our kids were processing things by like adding hand washing stations to their Lego builds," said Lola. "We thought, that’s how we do things as humans. We play through it and figure out how we’re feeling."With that in mind, a project was launched.Dad, Tigre Pickett, says the family found some old poker cards, "Lola took a Sharpie and whiteout and started marking them up. We were like what if we had this card that did this?"Virus cards, spreaders, and antibodies. The headlines and stories of 2020 were becoming the cards of “It’s Contagious!” Like the café in Germany that required patrons to wear pool noodle hats for social distancing."We thought, well, there’s a card. That’s hilarious," said Lola as she and her husband showed off various cards. "So, we have things like that. We have home haircut. We have the t-p shortage which we’re going through again." "Like Zoom birthday parties," Tigre pipes in, as Lola continues, "And then things like antibodies become superheroes. They become a superpower card in the deck just like they do in real life."And the game itself becoming a part of real-life as the Picketts have invested in professional artwork and production in the hope that “It’s contagious,” catches on."We found that play is one of the fastest ways for processing," said Tigre. "And moving through some of that trauma and some of that experience."An experience the Pickett's are grateful in this case turned out well for their Grandfather who has recovered and now plays the new game with his family. To learn more about "It's Contagious!," check out the Picketts' Kickstarter page where the game can be pre-purchased or donations can be made to help fund their venture. 2741

ENCINITAS (CNS) - A North County community leader who's known as a bicycle and pedestrian safety advocate was hit by a truck and seriously injured while riding her bicycle in Encinitas early Saturday. The crash happened shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday on North Coast Highway 101 near Phoebe Street, San Diego Sheriff's Lt. Dave Perkins said. The victim was Roberta Walker, executive director of the Cardiff 101 Main Street Association, The Coast News reported. Walker is known as a staunch defender of pedestrian and cyclist rights. She was taken to a hospital in critical condition, Perkins said. Walker suffered injuries to her brain and spine, as well as broken bones, according to The Coast News.Alcohol and drugs were not considered to be factors in the crash, Perkins said.Cardiff 101 Main Street is an organization that promotes "a safe and healthy environment" and "a walkable community that provides goods and services for local residents and visitors alike" in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, according to the organization's website.A biographical page on the website describes Walker as a passionate cyclist. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — Opening a new small business in the middle of this pandemic is a risky move, but San Diegans are doing it. Candles on Tap in downtown Encinitas is taking the chance."Today is a big, nerve-wracking, exciting day but we are opening to the public," CEO and co-founder Chantel Johnson said. She and CFO and co-founder Marcus Wandell are hopeful about their new venture. "The feature event is the scent bar where you pull up a chair and pour your own blend," said Wandell. Johnson added, "We are a custom scent bar so when people come in, they’re able to hand pour their own soy candles, diffusers, and fragrance sprays and they get to choose from over 90 scents." Wandell says some of his personal favorites in their shop include a scent called "old books" and they also have a "cannabis" smell. The two are well aware of what they’re getting into. "We're opening in the middle of a pandemic and it's a brick and mortar store so what could go wrong, right?" Wandell said jokingly.Yet, they say they see this time as the perfect opportunity. “There's pent up energy and demand to get out and do something as long as it’s safe so we're seizing on that need in the community for folks to find an experience to do with their loved ones and friends,” says Wandell. The pair are not alone. The U.S. Census reports almost 3.3 million business applications have been filed this year which is up 700,000 from this time last year. There were reportedly more than 1.6 million quarterly applications. In California alone, week 43 saw almost 9,000 applications which is a 25% increase from this time last year.“Some of our friends [say we’re] so brave. This is a bold move but everyone's really excited for us,” added Johnson.Candles on Tap is located at 687 S Coast Hwy 101 Unit 155 in Encinitas. It's open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday from `12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Monday. 1923

ESCONDIDO, Calif (KGTV) -- A Palomar Water delivery man is being credited for saving the life of an elderly woman who fell and couldn't get up to call for help. On Monday, Marco Perea showed up to deliver water for his 88-year-old customer in Escondido. When he knocked on her door, he could hear her, but she wouldn't come to the door. After several attempts to get her to open the door, she was able to tell him that she'd fall on Sunday afternoon and hadn't been able to get up since then. Perea called 911 and paramedics and firefighters were able to make entry into the apartment. The woman was rushed to the hospital. Perea says the woman does have a caregiver, but only from Monday through Fridays. The woman's condition is still unknown. 755

ENCINITAS, CA (KGTV) -- As 9/11 approaches, we reflect on those who lost their lives, as well as, military members who have fought and continuing to fight for our freedoms. And in Encinitas they are doing just that, as one local business is paying tribute with the name on their products. The name of the company is Bubs Naturals, and they are all about a healthy living."Bubs Naturals is the highest grade collagen protein and MCT oil powder that you can get on the market. It's a fantastic way to supplement your life and create a healthier you," says co-owner Sean Lake.So how did the name Bubs come about? For Sean it all goes back to a childhood friendship."Bubs is a tribute to Glen "Bub" Doherty. He was a former Navy SEAL, an Encinitas resident, my roommate, and lifelong friends since we were kids."A friendship that ended way too soon."Glen was one of the Navy SEAL'S who was killed in the terrorist attacks on 9/11 in Benghazi, Libya. So the brand is a tribute to Glen and his way of life, which was a guy who stood for self improvement."In their younger years, Sean says he and Glen might be considered ski bums."Two guys turning 25, who were trying to figure out what we were going to do with our lives."Sean ended up going to college in Utah, while Glen decided to become a Navy SEAL."We joked about that old Charlie Sheen movie Navy SEAL's, and I was like, that's what you want to do?"While Sean and his partner T.J. are the Co-Founders of Bubs Naturals, Glen plays a major part in the company. "We joked that Glen is the third partner at Bubs. He's apart of this operation as his spirit is in everything that we do."And in Glen's memory, Bubs donates 10% of their sales to the Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation which provides scholarships for military veterans and their families. 1804
