CHENGDU, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called the past 110 days since the May 12 quake "shocking and touching" when speaking to journalists in southwest China's quake-hit Sichuan Province on Tuesday.     "The past 110 days were days that shocked our minds, and also days that touched our hearts," said Wen. "It's not a long time, but what we did, as witnessed by people all over the world, will go down in history." We made the utmost efforts to save people's lives even if there was a slightest hope, and we never gave up," Wen recalled at an improvisatori press conference in Yingxiu Town, the epicenter of the May 12 quake.     About 84,000 people were rescued out of debris after the quake, according to Wen.     The 8.0-magnitude earthquake killed more than 69,000 people in Sichuan and neighboring provinces and left nearly 18,000 missing.     According to the quake relief headquarters under the State Council, now people in the quake zone had no problem in eating, drinking among other life necessities. No major epidemics were reported and industry and agriculture basically resumed.     The nation also demonstrated a kind of great spirit in the quake rescue and relief efforts and gained plenty of precious experiences in coping with emergencies, Wen said. "These will be more everlasting in the quake zone and in our hearts."     Citing soldiers rescuing life around the clock, volunteers taking care of survivors and local people helping each other, Wen expressed his appreciation for all the merits demonstrated on the rescuers and survivors.     Wen said the rebuilding of houses and infrastructures remained the most urgent and difficult task for relief work, citing that it took more than 100 days to fully repair the trunk road linking quake-hit Dujiangyan and Wenchuan and it required no less to keep it open as aftershocks continued to trouble the areas.     According to Wen, in October a nationwide campaign will be launched on donating clothes and quilts to the quake zone to help people there spend winter "safe and sound".     He vowed the central government would continue the relief work as best as it can along with local governments and residents.

BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- The government has cut back on import taxes on spare parts of large equipment and canceled the import tariff exemption on some complete sets.     The adjustments were made to support the domestic manufacturing of large equipment, said the Ministry of Finance.     Taxes levied on domestic enterprises for importing key spare parts of large equipment, including ultra- and extra-high voltage transmission equipment and transformers, large petro-chemical equipment and large coal-chemical equipment, would be refunded and injected into the enterprises as investment from the nation, it said.     The policy applied to imports after Jan. 1, 2008, depending on the date of declaration of imports.     In the meantime, the import of some complete sets of equipment by enterprises approved after Sept. 1, 2008 would no longer enjoy the tax exemption. Both domestic and foreign-funded projects are subject to the new policy, the ministry said.     Imports of such equipment by enterprises approved before Sept. 1 would continue to enjoy the previous tax policies until March 1,2009.

LANZHOU, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Inspectors had found poisonous chemical in the Sanlu infant formula produced by one of its partner producers in northwest China's Gansu Province, an official said on Sunday.     Two out of the 12 samples randomly selected from the Sanlu milk powder produced by the Haoniu Dairy Co., Ltd. in Jiuquan City had tested positive for melamine, said Xian Hui, vice-governor of Gansu.     "The products of Haoniu have been sealed up," he said.     The test was conducted after the Sanlu Group, a leading Chinese dairy producer based in northern Hebei Province, admitted that it had found some of its baby milk powder products were contaminated with melamine, a chemical raw material strictly forbidden by the country to be used in food processing.     As of Saturday, a total of 432 babies throughout the nation have been sickened with kidney stones after drinking the contaminated milk powder.     Haoniu was founded in 2002 with the registered capital of 51 million yuan (7.45 million U.S. dollars). Its production was in line with the Sanlu standard and its products use the Sanlu trademark.     As of Saturday night, Gansu has reported 102 cases of infant kidney stone caused by the Sanlu milk powder. Two babies have died, Xian said.     The province has so far seized altogether 164,000 packs of Sanlu milk powder.

BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- The spacewalk performed by Chinese taikonauts Zhai Zhigang Saturday afternoon marks a major breakthrough in China's space program, Chinese President Hu Jintao said.     Hu talked with the trio taikonauts at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center for the Shenzhou-7 mission at 6:35 p.m. Saturday, when he inquired the physical conditions of the three taikonauts.     "Your country and your fellow citizens thank you for your devotion to the space program," he said.     He congratulated the trio over the success of the spacewalk, and encouraged them to continue the efforts for a "complete success.     Zhai Zhigang was assisted during the spacewalk by Liu Boming in the orbit module. China is the third country in the world to accomplish the feat after the United States and Russia. "How did you feel like in space?", President Hu asks spacewalker    Chinese President Hu Jintao asked Chinese taikonauts what it was like walking in space in a conversation with them after the trio successfully realized the country's first-ever space walk on Saturday.     "How did you feel like in space after exiting the module?" asked smiling Hu, who was talking on a phone that connected him at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center (BACC) with astronauts on the spacecraft Shenzhou-7.     "I felt superb," answered Zhai Zhigang, who carried out about 25 minutes of extra-vehicular activity (EVA) about 343 km above the earth after floating out of the Shenzhou-7 cabin on Saturday afternoon.     "The process of taking on the Feitian spacesuit went smooth," said Zhai, looking confident and radiant on the screen at the BACC. "In the vast space, I felt proud of our motherland."      Hu congratulated the astronauts on the successful feat and encouraged them to carry on efforts to fulfill the mission.     "The thing I most want to know is how are you feeling now and how is your work going," Hu asked the trio.     "We feel well," said Zhai. "We conducted the space scientific tests as planned and the EVA went smoothly."     Hu hailed the spacewalk as a sign of the country's progress in space scientific technology.     "You have made outstanding contribution to our country's space project," said Hu. "The country and the Chinese people are grateful to you."     At 4:43 p.m. (0843 GMT) on Saturday, Zhai slipped out of the orbital module of Shenzhou-7 in a head-out-first position, wearing a 4-million-U.S.dollar homemade Feitian space suit.     China's first-ever spacewalk marked a remarkable progress in the country's ambitious space program, which will eventually lead to the establishment of a permanent space station. KUNMING, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has pledged that his government will extend further support to poor areas inhabited by ethnic minority people.     "All ethnic groups form one big family. We must be united and help each other, to prosper and make progress together," Wen told a group of Jingpo nationality farmers during a visit to the Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture in Southwest China's Yunnan Province. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visits the DehongDai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China's Yunnan Province from March 31 to April 1.Wen's trip to Yunnan from March 31 to April 1 took place after he attended the third Summit of the Greater Mekong Subregion held in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. Yunnan has the largest number of ethnic minority groups among all Chinese regions.     Wen told farmers in Dai, Jingpo and De'ang villages that his new cabinet has decided to increase rural spending by 25 billion yuan (3.5 billion U.S. dollars).     Government shall also increase subsidies for cereal growing and farming machines as well as the minimum state purchasing prices for rice and wheat, Wen said in a Dai village, greeting local farmers in Dai language. Local governments should also help them find jobs in cities.     In a De'ang nationality village at the foot of a mountain, Premier Wen met Yao Lateng in his new house. When he learnt that Yao married a Han girl, Wen shook hands with the couple and said, "This is unity among ethnic groups."     The village was relocated to a flat place near national highway302 from a nearby mountain five years ago, with special government funding to help ethnic minority groups.     Wen urged local officials to make education their top priority, saying that education is the foundation for people to improve their life.     Wen also hosted a small meeting attended by a dairy farmer, a school master and a countryside doctor, among others, to solicit their opinions of government work.
