BEIJING, April 22 (Xinhua) -- A leading Chinese government think tank Thursday forecast the country's 2010 economic growth would top the 8-percent target set by the central government by almost 2 percentage points.The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) forecast China's gross domestic product (GDP) would expand by 9.9 percent this year, 1.2 percentage points higher than last year's growth rate.Its forecast is higher than the 9.6-percent economic growth predicted by the Asian Development Bank earlier this month.Fixed assets investment would rise 33.3 percent year on year in 2010, said a blue book on China's 2010 economic prospects jointly released by the CASS and the Social Sciences Academic Press.The CASS said a slim chance existed of serious inflation in China this year with the consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, growing within a moderate range.The book also said the government should make economic policies more flexible and better targeted over the rest of the year, while mapping out plans to withdraw stimulus measures gradually within the next two years without jeopardizing economic growth.China's GDP grew 11.9 percent year on year in the first quarter to 8.06 trillion yuan (1.19 trillion U.S. dollars) and fixed assets investment rose 25.6 percent to 3.53 trillion yuan during the same period.The country's CPI rose 2.4 percent year on year in March, below the government target limit of 3 percent.

SHENYANG, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has encouraged local governments and farmers in northeast China to expand grain production to stabilize the nation's food supply.Hui made the call during an inspection tour to Liaoning Province, a major rice-producing province in northeast China, from Friday to Saturday.The grain planting situation this summer is challenging as persistent cold weather since last winter has ravaged major production zones in the north.Hui said northeast China is a key rice production area. HONG KONG, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong's leading charity donor, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, said Sunday it had donated another 16.3 million HK dollars (2.1 million U.S. dollars) for earthquake-hit area in northwestern China's Qinghai province to help disaster relief work.Together with the emergency donation of 2 million HK dollars made earlier, the Jockey Club contributed over 18.3 million HK dollars to support relief work for victims of the 7.1-magnitude earthquake, which hit the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu in Qinghai on April 14.In a press release, the Jockey club said it achieved a net operating surplus of 15.36 million HK dollars on April 21 at the Happy Valley race meeting. BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Wednesday called for greater efforts to fulfill the energy-saving and emission reduction goals set out in the nation's 11th Five Year Plan.According to the plan laid out in 2006, China will cut its per unit GDP energy consumption by 20 percent compared with 2005 levels by the end of 2010.Relevant departments must work harder to help enterprises close down old and polluting production facilities, he said at a State Council meeting.The departments must also suspend approval of new projects by enterprises failing to eliminate backward production capacity, he added.He also stressed efforts to curb the expansion of high energy-consuming industry, and emphasized strict control of exports of goods produced in an energy-inefficient way.Wen said energy-saving and emission reduction are priorities for the construction and transportation industries.Public institutions nationwide are expected to lower their energy consumption by 5 percent year on year in 2010, he added.More energy-conservation and emission-reduction publicity campaigns should be organized to promote the development of "green" consumption, he said.
